correct, hotels/accommodations are another sector that is run mostly through students and minijobbers.
Lacerda69··on In San Francisco, one person dies of an accidental overdose every 10 hours
Yes the problem is illegality. As long as mafia can make trillions of this shit nothing will get better.

The solution is not more police.

>no downside for trying out that lifestyle

Is that a joke? you know that the average addict "lifestyle" is literally hell

Lacerda69··on On the unexpected joys of Denglisch, Berlinglish and global Englisch
That is only correct for a very small number of hip cafes and restaurants in certain districts tbh.

You can employ germans indefinitely without "proper" contract as well through something called "Minijob" and the majority of cafes and restaurant skirt the law and let you work without paying taxes "illegally". Most of the ppl working there are students or in between careers. Only a fraction of the staff will be employed permanently with "real" contracts.

source: worked in the industry there for 6+ years

Bottom line, a college degree is massively overrated and expensive and then some.

Lacerda69··on GitHub now allows enabling private vulnerability reporting at scale
As maintainer what is keeping me from using this as a replacement for bug bounty platforms like hackerone, is the missing payout functionality. this is quite hard to do if you serve bounties worldwide (lets say researcher is in Indonesia, while my OSS company is in US) without significant bureaucracy and admin overhead. Anyone know a solution to this that does not involve commercial bug bounty platforms or something something crypto?
Lacerda69··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
I guess there are tradeoffs both ways.

I will gladly accept that downside(?) of having to give 3 months advanced notice for the upside of not being fired arbitrarily on the spot whenever my employer feels like it.

Lacerda69··on Google DeepMind
oh my bad i probably opted out right from the start then + heavy use of adblockers
Lacerda69··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
Cue the atomic fanatics vs the renewable cult discussion. Has been discussed a thousand times on HN recently and it always seems both are just shouting how the other side can not see the obvious superiority of their fav energy source.

why cant we have a bit of both? renewable seems very good long term and nuclear is also nice for transition. but I wouldnt want to live next to one of those crappy leaky french reactors.

Lacerda69··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
You can swipe the data and leave havoc causing traps before giving notice, right? what am i missing?
Lacerda69··on Google DeepMind
i used gmail since the beta and never saw an ad there, what are you talking about?
Lacerda69··on Misalignment Museum
Simon, you are a beast, is there anything you don't do?

many thanks for all the content and inspiration, your blog is genuinely my favourite read right now!

Lacerda69··on Germany Quits Nuclear Power, Ending a Decades-Long Struggle
Its the other way around; it was very unpopular, which is why the Green party formed in the first place.
Lacerda69··on Germany Quits Nuclear Power, Ending a Decades-Long Struggle
because someone else supported the idea they are now responsible? weird take on how government should be held accountable.
Lacerda69··on About three-in-ten U.S. adults say they are ‘almost constantly’ online (2021)
i dont know about you but we mostly did this because we were bored as fuck.

plus dangerous behaviours like drinking, smoking, fighting with other kids, setting trash on fire, destroying property, stealing, an generally being a menace to society.

i think playing a bit of vidya is a god alternative outlet, and it can be just as social.

but i always admired the culture in the us where random ppl would strike up a conversation with you. if someone did that over here i would expect to get scammed, robbed or both.

Lacerda69··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
>go after supply and possession again

that achieved 0 results in 40+ years of drug warfare with millions dead and the rise of international cartels who are as powerful as nation states.

This is not the way, complete legalization is the only way to break the power of cartels.

Lacerda69··on Tailscale – Introducing Custom OIDC
If you are just looking to run a custom OAuth/OIDC server, Ory Hydra is ridiculously easy to set up.

Keycloak comes with the full IAM stack, so if you need that good; if you just need the OAuth server, its a bit much in my opinion. Have not tried Dex so can't speak to that.

Lacerda69··on Ask HN: Would banning travel between Ukraine and Russia end the war?
you just solved all conflicts, just ban travel and all stay at home or at the pub and bother noone.
Lacerda69··on Show HN: While painting this, I had nothing in mind
I thought its more about really feeling as a viewer what the painting stirs in your own soul and not what the painters feeling/intention/state of mind was when he created the painting. Like dont read the art critic interpretation (or not only) but rather really feel what the art invokes in you - a unique feeling.

better err on the side of caution with this stuff. you can manage just fine without potassium bromate.

Lacerda69··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
dont have kids, pets or a tv. my phone is with me in the office. chores are taken care of in short breaks which i need to take anyway. not sure how neighbours would distract me.

dont assume everyone else lives like you

Lacerda69··on AI Looks Like a Bubble
>quite trivial to create a competitor.

I dont get it though, if its that easy why is there no meaningful alternative to openai now? or are you arguing that that will happen later on once its (even more) established?
