LaSombra··on Apple downgrades new M2 iPad Air, 9-core GPU instead of 10-core
Will anyone notice a difference?
LaSombra··on Tesla 'self-driving' technology failed to detect a moving train ahead of a crash
There's also the fact that road signage alerts of train tracks well in advance to increase our awareness level to the road ahead.
LaSombra··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
This is quite astonishing...
LaSombra··on Apple's iOS 18 AI will be on-device preserving privacy, and not server-side

LaSombra··on Endless Censorship Demands from Brazil
Nailed it.
LaSombra··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
All this added padding from the last few releases forces me to believe this is in preparation for a port to iPad or AVP.

EDIT: The hardware is there, it's just a matter of getting the right UX in place.

LaSombra··on XFCE 4.20 Aiming for Usable Wayland Support While Maintaining X11 Compatibility
How so? It's all FOSS.

LaSombra··on Apple's Blue Ocean
I didn't know John pivoted to full time podcasting. This actually explains, IMHO, the shift towards a more forgiving view of Apple's product directions.
LaSombra··on Apple's Blue Ocean
I have huge respect for John Siracusa. His articles at Ars Technica, pragmatic opinions on the world of computing always spoke to me, but this article sounds like something written by John Gruber.

Apple indeed innovated in multiple ways and markets, but un-removable batteries wasn’t one.

LaSombra··on The iOS option to charge battery to "80% Limit" shouldn't just be for iPhone 15
I found this strange as well and have been wondering if there is a hardware constraint that no one is aware, yet.
LaSombra··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
What are you talking about? What is the relation between Fedora’s decision and the JBoss acquisition?
LaSombra··on Tesla’s new car-building process could be an industrial breakthrough
Depends what the small letters say. Not all insurances are equal, unfortunately.
LaSombra··on Tesla (TSLA) tumbles on price cuts, “appreciating asset” dream going away
Oh yeah. I have a friend that said exactly that. The depreciation according to them is negligible compared to other brands to the point that they consider it as an appreciating asset.

They sold a M3 bought in 2017 and lost about £3000 for a new M3 just to recycle the warranty.

LaSombra··on CIQ, Oracle, SUSE Create Open Enterprise Linux Association
Those benefits that CentOS, Rocky offer, as you said, are without cost because the cost is shouldered by Red Hat. If you're a 1:1 rebuild, you can't introduce your own fixes, so CentOS, Rocky rely on Red Hat to write and produce a fix that will then be rebuilt "free of charge" as you mention.

How is that lock-in from Red Hat's part?

LaSombra··on Buying an iPad Pro for coding was a mistake
Might be the first step into evaluating this course of action. Who knows?
LaSombra··on Buying an iPad Pro for coding was a mistake
I think Apple might still be gearing towards adding macOS in the iPad only because the macOS interface has been adding padding, in almost all recent releases, while screens have remained the same size. I don't see any other reason for added padding around controls apart from a touch screen future.
LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
I'm still waiting on their IPO to find out how well this strategy is working for them.
LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Correct. But don't you have to be an owner of their products to ask for the GPL'ed code?
LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
End users are allowed to redistribute the source they received from Red Hat at their hearts content. What Red Hat is terminating, from my understanding, is the future access to new binaries and sources due to the service contract becoming void.

Your server will keep running, you'll have the sources for all the server's binaries, but no more support.

LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Auto makers, TV makers, and others use GPL software left and right and they don't, or rarely, offer a easy way to obtain it. How's it different?
LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
You say that and it feels like Red Hat never contributed a single line of code to any FOSS projects or doesn't hire any developers to work on FOSS.
LaSombra··on I'm Done with Red Hat (Enterprise Linux)
Red Hat offers free subscriptions to developers. How doesn't it help in this case?
LaSombra··on Widespread ethernet issues reported on new M2 Pro Mac mini
When did it happen that macOS became Windows wrt answers like "Format it and see if the issue persists" or "Wipe the installation and try again"?

I remember those as solutions for Windows registry bloat, so much so that reinstalling Windows was something scheduled regularly to avoid issues.

LaSombra··on IBM to cut about 3,900 workers while still hiring in ‘higher growth’ areas
You can run Kubernetes on mainframes as well as Linux, so developing for mainframes has become easier these last 20 or so years.
LaSombra··on Google Maps' moat is evaporating (2020)
And I think that's one of the main problems with Apple Maps. Once you leave main metropolitan areas, the features start to dwindle.

LaSombra··on Tesla FSD Beta almost causes a head-on collision [video]
I wonder if there's cost involved on the decision to not having radar or LIDAR installed on those cars.
