LTL_FTC··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
To second the other commenter, just go for it! Music doesn’t have to be blaring to be enjoyed. Just buy some turntable and begin enjoying your collection. Heck, you could even use headphones. I have a pair of open back headphones with a cable that is like 15 feet in length. So I can easily connect to my receiver and sit back and listen on the couch.
LTL_FTC··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
Are these smaller artists that also have a Patreon? The first time I moved and had to move and get rid of all my stuff I swore I wouldn’t accumulate it anymore. As much as I like the idea of a vinyl collection I would not want to lug it around during my next move…Stuff is heavy.
LTL_FTC··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
Well, if you buy a new device and don’t enroll in AppleCare, you have a little red notification in the settings. I have two notifications currently that I cannot get rid of until the 60 window expires. I would consider this an ad.
LTL_FTC··on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13
I think they mean different regions have physically different layouts. I supported users in different countries and know that French layouts are different than Hebrew layouts which are different from English layouts and so on. Trying to buy different key caps doesn’t give the user a native layout because the shapes of the layouts are somewhat different.
LTL_FTC··on Show HN: Jmail – Google Suite for Epstein files
Coincidence that this release happens on the weekend before Christmas when everyone is busy and less likely to notice?

LTL_FTC··on OMSCS Open Courseware
I have been considering the OMSCS program for some time but one of my reservations is the network one misses out on by working side by side with students and faculty vs online ed.

For context: non-traditional student who transferred to UCSD for college, two of those years were spent during Covid. Moved back to Bay Area. My network isn’t as big as someone who maybe went to San Jose state. And so they prob have an easier time finding jobs. I worked with other students through discord and so on, attended virtual office hours with professors and TAs (who were the reason many of us passed these classes, I’m sure) but never truly built a relationship that lasted beyond the quarter because zoom, essentially.

And if I go back to grad school, I would really love to build relationships with others around me. Wondering how others have managed with this regard?

LTL_FTC··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
Linear algebra cannot be learned in a day. Maybe multiplying matrices when the dimensions allow but there is far more to linear algebra than knowing how to multiply matrices. Knowing when and why is far more interesting. Knowing how to decompose them. Knowing what a non-singular matrix is and why it’s special and so on. Once you know what’s found in a basic lower devision linear algebra class, one can move it linear programming and learn about cost functions and optimization or numerical analysis. PyTorch is just a calculator. If I handed someone a Ti-84 they wouldn’t magically know how to bust out statistics on it…
LTL_FTC··on I made a quieter air purifier
Oh, boy. During the great California fire of 2020, I went down a very deep rabbit hole looking to air purification. I studied what is out there. I compared their characteristics with regard to filter media quality, air cycles, PM2.5 performance, VOC's, energy consumption, and so on, but my goal was to have performance and near silence. I learned about static pressure and how important it is to choose the right blower for the job (impeller and blower vs fan; and yes, a blower creates vastly more static pressure than these fans). I looked into what quantities of charcoal actually deliver meaningful VOC reduction and how often they must be replaced (you need lbs of it; that single filter on the front of most purification units does nothing but act as a pre-filter). I really should have written all my research and discovery down but if you are serious about it, I came to the following conclusions:

1. A furniture company that decides to integrate a purification system into their offerings can hit it big. Imagine a big, heavy dresser in your bedroom that sucks in air from the bottom and pushes up to the top or a TV stand that where different compartments are filter media. The mass of these reduces noise and vibration and allow for larger, slower spinning blowers and larger surface area of filter media (less static pressure, longer replacement intervals, easily hold pounds of activated charcoal).

2. One needs to pump in oxygen from the outside and exchange the indoor air with the outside air. Circulating and cleaning the air in the home, especially with modern doors and windows, will become unpleasant in a short while, especially during wildfire season. The positive pressure this creates also helps pollutants stay out, if done correctly.

I would absolutely go the diy route using large filters, activated carbon, housed in a wooden box with a blower and implement something like AC Infinity's in-line filtration systems to pull outside air in through a window, with a large carbon filter on one end. Or if a homeowner, set up a more permanent solution. https://acinfinity.com/inline-fan-systems/

LTL_FTC··on Static Web Hosting on the Intel N150
If it had a a few more cores, something like this would make for a great node in a distributed system like k8s or ceph for a homelab. At the asking price, however, one could also cross shop an HP micro server gen11.
LTL_FTC··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Absolutely. People just crank up the brightness on the inside lights because "blinky lights" but I have also noticed that, modern cars typically include fog lights which used to be a luxury or premium option, many people just drive around with these lights on as well. Fog lights are illuminating the area closer to the vehicle and therefore inhibit one's visibility further down the road. So now we get super bright vehicles coming at us, inhibiting our ability to see.

Don't get me started on lifted vehicles and their lights...Dept. of transportation needs to figure out a way to enforce a standard height for headlights from all vehicle shapes and heights. Driving after dark is getting more and more dangerous, not less.

LTL_FTC··on Hard drives on backorder for two years as AI data centers trigger HDD shortage
Chia was/is WORM (write once , read many) so not sure how these drives were heavily abused? As a storage nerd, I bought many 18tb drives for chia and they are still spinning just fine in my storage arrays. It’s been five years.
LTL_FTC··on Hard drives on backorder for two years as AI data centers trigger HDD shortage
Yup. Walked into a microcenter a few weeks ago and was surprised and saddened by how expensive everything has gotten.

Were you also one of Dr. Kedlaya’s students? Or just used that link? I was in an undergrad course of his and really enjoyed it. Such a smart guy.

5090's, yes. The one in Santa Clara has had them in stock for months. FE, no. Not sure if those are even produced anymore.
LTL_FTC··on Ask HN: My family business runs on a 1993-era text-based-UI (TUI). Anybody else?
I worked as a sales consultant for AT&T wireless, back during the smartphone boom, at their retail stores. During onboarding everyone was taught how to use the GUI for everything (OPUS, I believe it was called): creating accounts, upgrading accounts, etc. But I noticed a few of the senior reps lived in the TUI (Telegence) and wondered why. When asked they claimed they were just used to it, but I quickly learned how much faster it was by observing them. They were able to process customers so much more quickly, a comparative advantage in commissioned-based sales.

My buddy and I requested access and learned how to use it. Not only did it streamline our process, it allowed us to do everything, where the GUI often omitted certain tasks forcing us reps to call customer service (for example, providing customers with credits after fixing their accounts).

So we lived with both the GUI up for when management walked by and relied on the TUI when we needed/wanted to work quickly.

I bet the system hasn't changed a bit. But I still live in the terminal quite a bit these days.

LTL_FTC··on My Impressions of the MacBook Pro M4
It’s often much more than $200 as the base models can be had for huge discounts, like $450 off retail, but the second you check the nano texture option, you lose the discount and you tack on the extra $200. So it’s often closer to $700 in some cases.
LTL_FTC··on Claude Memory
We sure are. We are all discovering context rot on our own timelines. One thing that has really helped me when working with LLMs is to notice when it begins looping on itself, asking it to summarize all pertinent information and to create a prompt to continue in a new conversation. I then review the prompt it provides me, edit it, and paste it into a new chat. With this approach I manage context rot and get much better responses.
LTL_FTC··on More random home lab things I've recently learned
You can also run PBS alongside PVE and you get to it by using port 8007 instead of 8006. I found this worked quite well and is fully supported.
LTL_FTC··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
An application that helps deaf and nonverbal individuals with daily interactions when they’re out and about.

My first career was in sales. And most of the time these interactions began with grabbing a sheet of paper and writing to one another. I think small LLMs can help here.

Currently making use of api’s but I think small models on phones will be good enough soon. Just completed my MVP.

LTL_FTC··on Show HN: A Digital Twin of my coffee roaster that runs in the browser
Gotta admit, when I read "digital twin" I though it was the kind that Nvidia likes to show off. Would be really awesome future work if you were able to pull that off. I mean, this already super cool! but you know, gaussian splatting...
LTL_FTC··on Why Self-Host?
I also have a threadripper pro with tons of pcie lanes. Just wish there was an easier way to use newer datacenter flash and that it wasn't so expensive. Hoping those servers that hold 20 something u.2/3 drives start getting decommissioned soon as I hope my current batch of HDD's will be my last. Curious to know how you're using all those nvme drives?
LTL_FTC··on Self hosting 10TB in S3 on a framework laptop and disks
I appreciate the response! Thanks for the update. I will continue keeping an eye on the project then and possibly giving it a try. I have read the docs and was considering setting it up across two sites. The implementation seemed address this pain point with distributed storage solutions and latency.
LTL_FTC··on Self hosting 10TB in S3 on a framework laptop and disks
I have also been considering this for some time. Been comparing MinIO, Garage, and Ceph. MinIO may not be wise given their recent moves, as another commenter noted. Garage seems ok but their git doesn’t show much activity these days so I wonder if it too will be abandoned. Which leaves us with Ceph. May have a higher learning curve but also offers the most flexibility as one can do object as well as block and file. Gonna set up a single node with 9 OSD’s soon and give it a go but always looking for input if anyone would like to provide some.
LTL_FTC··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
Well the discussion was California as a whole and averages, so I decided to share. As with averages, data is above and bellow the mean, so when a commenter above said $.30/kwh was much too low for California, I decided to lend some support the the argument as I’m in California paying bellow the average. It’s a just a data point. A counter example to the claim made by parent. Maybe it helps fellow nerds pick a spot in the bay if they want to run their homelabs.
LTL_FTC··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
Correct. $0.15/kwh is usage. There are a few small fees but that’s likely the case in most places. This is residential use. If skeptical, a quick online search is all it takes…

This is no longer the case with macOS 26.

Edit: each container still gets its own vm but the container runtime is now native.

They have definitely increased but not all of California is like this. In the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clara, it's about $0.15/kWh. Having Data Centers nearby helps, I suppose.
