LMYahooTFY··on China has added forest the size of Texas since 1990
All nuclear explosions themselves aren't even going to be statistically detectable.

IIRC from assessments of the US military's carbon footprint, cumulative footprint of nuclear weapons infrastructure is probably significantly less than .1%

There's a hundred other things to worry about first IMO.

LMYahooTFY··on What we talk about when we talk about sideloading
That's awful, but it has nothing to do with sideloading or needing locked down phones.

Apparently this idea that security and user control are a trade off has been sold pretty well, and it's bull shit. Nothing about a phone which isn't locked down to the user precludes all the security features you'd want on by default for your mother.

But I doubt you'll catch Apple or Google going out of their way to explain that. They're better off having you believe that the trade off is necessary, and you probably wouldn't miss the freedom anyway.

LMYahooTFY··on What we talk about when we talk about sideloading
It's been discussed previously, but pixel devices are chosen for hardware security feature sets. Other devices are either not compatible/open enough to use or a security downgrade.
LMYahooTFY··on Who owns Express VPN, Nord, Surfshark? VPN relationships explained (2024)
Cover to do what? Insert malicious code and hope no one else notices? Or coerce everyone in the company to look the other way?

If an intelligence agency wants to compromise a service, they have much more discreet, powerful, and deniable ways to accomplish this.

LMYahooTFY··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
You're asking me if straight up stealing money from a bank is comparable to stealing books in 2025 to train an AI which will generate untold value for people?

This is not related to public spaces.

So they own fake treasuries?
LMYahooTFY··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
The law was not broken by "super rich people".

It was broken by a company of people who were not very rich at all and have managed to produce billions in value (not dollars, value) by breaking said laws.

They're not trafficking humans or doing predatory lending, they're building AI.

This is why our judicial system literally handles things on a case by case basis.

How exactly is it a scam now? Did they somehow fake treasury purchases? Can you describe something scam like about their business which doesn't also apply to JP Morgan?
LMYahooTFY··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
Let's not forget:

No advertising.

I think, particularly now after having the luxury of ad blockers for so long, that many of us are extremely triggered by advertisements and see them more nakedly as the awful propaganda they are.

Disrupting a cinematic experience with garbage propaganda ruins it. It's an insult to the creators, and none of us should tolerate it.

I'm glad streaming services adopted a better model, but then they reverted back as they increased prices because the money is too good and people put up with it.

LMYahooTFY··on Mexico to US livestock trade halted due to screwworm spread
Do you have a source? Because this appears to be false. I can't find anything indicating it was funded by USAID.

Everything I'm reading says it has been funded by USDA, and in fact funding has been significantly increased during 2025.

LMYahooTFY··on Open Sauce is a confoundingly brilliant Bay Area event
I would say no. I don't think one can adopt this stance without thinking less of people who pursue those activities. And I'd rather show kids humility, as opposed to superiority.
LMYahooTFY··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact was the perfect size phone and I hate the world for not having successors of the same size.

LMYahooTFY··on Evolving OpenAI's Structure
Does Google not have brand recognition and Consumer good will? We might read all sorts of deep opinions of Google on HN, but I think Search and Chrome market share speak themselves. For the average consumer, I'm skeptical that OpenAI carries much weight.
LMYahooTFY··on Self-Driving Teslas Are Fatally Rear-Ending Motorcyclists More Than Any Other
I guess I just have to accept that for the foreseeable future, any article in any way related to Elon Musk will result in a lot of angry low quality comments that get lots of upvotes.

Instead of critiquing the article for liberal use of words like "overwhelmingly", "unique", and " 100% of Teslas" on an n=5 cars, with limited data and a very questionable analysis of the Snohomish accident, we discuss how Musk is a fraud.

LMYahooTFY··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
Doesn't it have to listen to everything locally for a command though? I wonder if only commands are keywords.

He does not have the power to dismiss Judges and Congressional representatives.

Judges can only be removed by Congress.

Congressional representatives can only be removed by their peers.

LMYahooTFY··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
The impetus for this is largely from Congress in both parties. Public support often doesn't align with congressional action and it doesn't stop them.

Vote for your congress members.

LMYahooTFY··on Intel announces Arc B-series "Battlemage" discrete graphics with Linux support
It's true but I don't run into this issue often since most games and Windows will offer UI/Menu scaling without changing individual windows or the game itself.
LMYahooTFY··on Intel gets up to $7.9B award for U.S. chip-plant construction
It would cost 5x or more that amount to get one of those companies to where Intel is.
LMYahooTFY··on Intel gets up to $7.9B award for U.S. chip-plant construction
No, they wouldn't. That wouldn't even build them one fab, let alone summon all of the talent and supply chain out of thin air.
LMYahooTFY··on Intel gets up to $7.9B award for U.S. chip-plant construction
Pizza parties?

I think you have a lot more reading to do. This industry is hard to grasp and it's the most capital intensive industry that exists.

They're not throwing pizza parties.
