It's certainly rewarding and interesting to design the hardware and then write the software in Assembly, and helps understand how simple operating systems work.
A bunch of people are still building new systems with modern twists, fixing old ones and writing software. forum.6502.org has been an invaluable resource for me building my own machine
I'm not having much luck finding very much information on it though
It's pretty depressing
Alternatively attempt to send a message to a nonexistent address on your MTA using telnet which should throw an error after "RCPT TO" if the server is configured correctly Steps to test SMTP via telnet: https://my.esecuredata.com/index.php?/knowledgebase/article/...
The fix is to configure your MTA so that it doesn't send backscatter
The downstream MX could be configured to then send an NDR email itself but this lands you on spam lists as "backscattering" will then send spam back to whoever owns the email address the spammer is spoofing so it's generally not done.
Presumably it should be possible to create a simple drive emulator to spit out that sector/track header without needing an actual disk. Not sure if I'm smart enough to tackle that but it's worth a try!
I'm already working on a 6502 System at the moment that has an 82077AA compatible FDC and can read PC Formatted floppies so it should be relatively easy for me to tool around with this hack.
Interested to hear what it's for
I don't know about Canada but I feel like if you tried to implement this in Australia there'd be a lot of paranoia over a system like BankID with regards to privacy or gatekeeping
Even if your connection is TLS secured an MITM attack of causing a connection reset after X bytes could be a viable attack
Plenty of software projects put more care and focus into their software and not in their website, if you're running a vulnerable version of Wordpress or whatever CMS it'd be easy for someone to insert something malicious without being noticed whereas something that modified your code would show up in git, code reviews etc
