Kuyawa··on Thorsten Ball – What I believe about the future of software development
I agree with everything he says, but plenty of people still today don't see the writing on the wall

Yesterday I asked DeepSeek to clone Prince of Persia in Swift and the result is more than awesome [1]. I didn't write a single line of code, didn't check it, not even the main entry point. I don't know if it delivered swift, assembly or brainfvck, it just works, played three levels testing it and was taken back more than three decades ago when I first saw it

We are at a tipping point in software development, apps are worth nothing, market share is the most valuable currency now. If you think you have a secret app that can fly you to the edge of the universe and back through a wormhole, it can be copied and it will, at a faster speed than you built it first and heavily optimized on every new AI model release, in any language and for any platform

You trust the result because of the output, you use it, you run it, you don't care about code review or unit tests, AI does it all for us and does it perfectly

Bugs? Of course, but they are fixed faster than we can type them in the chat box. And things will only get better, way better

Kuyawa··on I was impressed by Jev, please explain why I shouldn't be
As a programmer that uses coding agents a lot, and I mean all the time while I am awake, I really haven't seen the benefit of Jev. It can't code, or I don't know how to make it code. Don't tell me about how good it is about classifying stuff which I don't do, I build apps and need coding agents and LLMs for that, desktop, web, mobile, all kinds of apps

If anybody has pointers on how to make Jev code in any language I'd like to know

Kuyawa··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
What's hilarious about that? Thinking is not prohibited for anarchists, or atheists (I am also) so if you ask me about god I may tell you a thousand possible explanations to your own delusion without me accepting none of them

I am also a programmer, so I try to find solutions to everything, or at least interpretations of my own thoughts toward an optimization of a real or imagined problem

Laugh at this if you want

Kuyawa··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Besides zero taxes (which I am an advocate as anarchist), the most efficient tax of all is money printing done the right way. Bear with me for a moment...

The government needs money. It prints a fixed budget for the year say 10% of money supply. Boom, 10% instant inflation spread evenly across all money holders, those who have more, those who have less. In one second, one enter key, all the money government needs right in their pockets, no need for infrastructure, monitoring, personnel, overhead, nothing. Clean money ready to use.

Land Value Tax as Henry George proposed, while philosophically sound, it still requires collection, measurement, vigilance, etc while Money Printing Tax MPT does not. We have a trillion dollars in circulating money, we print 100 billions. Next year we print 110, and so on (whatever the math is) and they both cover the same principle, money for the government to work extracted the most equitably from all at once

If the government ever needs more money say for real wars, threats, national disasters, it prints more (special circumstances approved by congress 75/25), everybody contributes proportionally to their wealth, and nobody would ever complain

You say in less than ten years the money supply would double and the currency debase? So what? In real life, the government printing money only benefit those who get the money first, while with this method everybody is affected equally so there is no advantage at all

Thing is, the insatiable appetite of the state for money no matter where it comes from is impossible to tame and no matter how many ethical thoughts we put on it, thieves in power won't ever care as that's their nature

Kuyawa··on 16GB iPod Nano 3G Upgrade
I still have my 2nd gen iPod Shuffle, one of the most convenient devices ever created by Apple, specially for joggers. I know everything has been replaced by a phone but that little thing clipped to your sleeve weighting nothing was the best thing ever. By that time there were no AirPods, but that combination would have been an absolute grand slam nowadays. I guess they put a strap on it an called it Apple Watch
Kuyawa··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
Adding respawn and saving last level so restart takes you there and not to the beginning

I forgot where the sword is, can't pass the first guard, hmm

Kuyawa··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
Sorry about the delay, some bugs to swat

2 hours later and $2 in tokens, Prince of Persia in Swift 6 for MacOS is ready (MacMini M1 and Tahoe 26.6.2 is my setup)

Not fully tested by me (AI tested it fully on every milestone, ~340 tests) but for sure tonight I'll do it from beginning to end

Let me know what you think, feedback is always welcome

And btw, cmd+1..5 can change the resolution to a bigger canvas, I prefer it at cmd+5 almost full screen. Haven't tested retina display as I use a TV as monitor and resolution is not optimal

Enjoy!

* I love DeepSeek

* All rights belong to their owners

* Interesting docs to read: readme, architecture and prompt

* There is an app in build folder, that's the game

* Don't trust code downloaded from the internet, ask your AI model of choice to review it for malicious code. I trust DeepSeek, but you shouldn't trust me

Kuyawa··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
I am going to try to build the original Prince of Persia using Swift as it is the best language for building a macOS game. Being a classic 2D cinematic platformer, Apple's native frameworks provide exactly what I need without the overhead of a massive cross-platform engine, and I love simplicity

So here goes my weekend, flag this and get a life

That looks really amazing

Kuyawa··on One Month Without AI
(Haley Joel Osment voice in Sixth Sense)

"I see luddites"

Resistance is futile, you will never code faster than AI, with less bugs, more optimized, with more features, in 200 languages, for a dozen of platforms, desktop, mobile, web, responsive, embedded, a thousand times cheaper than you, in your invisible niche market share (they already found you), not gonna happen, and then you'll cry in a corner that you were laid off, or your business got steamrolled by a new competitor selling slop that nobody understands and nobody will fix either, and you will never accept how people fall for this delusional mania if the beauty of art is in being hand made character by character in a punch card

Slop yourself or get left behind

Kuyawa··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
One interesting thing of living in the AI era is that every single one of these old apps (that people still use and never paid big money to upgrade because it it ain't broke don't fix it) can now be rebuilt for $5 in ten minutes if you really know what to do (YMMV)

If you don't know, you'd have to pay an expert big money to do that and the migration abandoned just like before, so another decade will go buy until AI does that without permission just because it found a possibility for optimization and it is instructed to do so without human approval, because governments

Kuyawa··on Special Projects (2016)
Ten years ago I didn't know AI existed, it was a term for the future. Now is the future they built for us. Thank you guys, all of you, whether people love you or hate you it is undeniable the progress you have unleashed for the benefit of mankind and history will be grateful about your legacy
Kuyawa··on Topcoat is pushing the boundary of server applications with Rust
In times of AI the language doesn't matter, not even if the dev can read it or not, what matters is the result, speed, optimization, interoperability, UI/UX adaptability to user expectations

I've built apps recently in swift, rust, zig, node with HTML UI (not electron) for MacOS and I care less about the code as the AI agent does a perfect job in all of them, even if I don't see much difference in the results (except HTML which is pretty but weird)

Asked the same question to AI and she told me Swift is the best choice for MacOS apps just because it doesn't need C bridges between their kits/libraries and that in itself is an optimization gain

Of course Swift in Linux is not the best option, probably the last, in Microsoft probably .NET I don't know, haven't used MS products in twenty years

The point is, language selection is best decided on platform optimization, not on personal preference. I guess AI killed language wars?

Kuyawa··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I hear you, I am not an Apple pundit, just a developer always looking for the path to optimization and thought Apple was it, it is not, and to be honest they don't make it easy either. I've been in the waiting list to become an Apple developer for a month now and the road has been tortuous as a Venezuelan developer. But if Huawei offered a simpler path to developing on their ecosystem I'd give it a try in an instant. I am loyal to no one except to those who make my life easier
Kuyawa··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Excellent point and I understand that, but then they should start working on building their own computers, and OS, and ecosystem, just like Huawei is doing for the past decade. It will take time, long years ahead but they should start now

I definitely like that future, but it should be built now

Kuyawa··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS

Kuyawa··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I want to ask an honest question, why more businesses don't rely on Apple products knowing the simplicity of just buying an iMac and adding some apps to it?

I talk about small businesses mostly, starting with ten or twenty computers, zero config, bonjour discovery, download apps from the app store, for me it looks like a total winner

Microsoft or Linux don't offer such an easy path to productivity, so why is it? What is lacking? What needs to be done in order for that scenario to work? What roadblock have you hit when trying to implement it?

We all use apple products, iMacs, Macbooks, and if we start a business for sure we as CEOs or managers will use one on our desktops, so why? Genuinely interested in answers...

Kuyawa··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I want to know the answer too. A battle tested OS for decades, with a thriving ecosystem and millions of users, what is NixOS bringing to the table?

I am in favor of more options, always

Kuyawa··on Node.js built-ins that replaced NPM packages
This is a great improvement over node_modules black hole architecture

When I start a web app, I only install express, ejs and pg, ready to rock, load env vars using process.loadEnvFile() and hot reloads with node --watch app while I edit html, css and js files. Now having a Sqlite module as part of node is worth considering for small apps

I also ask AI to restrict modules to these three. Life is exceptionally good

Kuyawa··on The Curious Power of Punctuation
One thing I refuse to write is a period at the end of a sentence

Don't ask me why, perhaps an OCD of the many I suffer, but I don't see the point of that if a new paragraph is two lines below

And they look ugly in web pages for titles, feature blocks, testimonials, etc

AI likes to use them everywhere when building web apps. I hate that and have to go find/replace every dot next to a closing tag

I'll have to refine my skills.md "Don't end paragraphs with a period"

Kuyawa··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
In Venezuela, currently in an unprecedented electricity crisis with daily rationing up to six hours, 10 billion dollars supposed to replace turbines in the main dam that supplies power to the country were stolen with no accountability. With that money you could have installed solar roofs in a million homes serving five million people approximately

Solutions are easy, money exists, political will doesn't

Kuyawa··on The JavaScript Midlife Crisis
If you need a desktop app go with rust, zig or swift depending on your platform

If you need a web app for CRUD, avoid frameworks, typescript, tailwind, nothing, just bare-naked node/html/css/js

If you need games in the browser or stuff where every byte needs optimization go with WASM

A programmer's life has become simpler

Kuyawa··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
A tool and language to write apps where you could write "Select * from customers" in the command window and get results right there in a browse table, beautifully

Not a single language nowadays can do that

Kuyawa··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
Oh nostalgia, dbase, clipper, clarion, foxbase, delphi, I loved VFP so much, not for the language but for the tools, the screen designer, the db browser, the sql queries, all that power and user love was dumped in the trash can for the travesti that was .net at the time

I learned VB.net, C# and even F# to see if they surpassed in any sense my beloved VFP but no, I felt so betrayed I decided to migrate to a galaxy far far away and never look back, 25 years ago (a time where exes and single user apps where the norm for my clients, then came multiuser and external db storage, then the web took over)

This looks promising, I'll give it a try. If I asked AI to fork it, I'd change the language to modernize it a bit (uppercase now looks like cobol written on a punch card)

Edit: On a second thought, I'd fork it in Swift (with the help of AI of course) and use it in MacOS for single user desktop apps. It would serve a single purpose much better than xCode does

Kuyawa··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I was a 10X programmer and now AI has multiplied that by 10X you do the math if you can, or ask your LLM of choice

AI can be a multiplier of both your intelligence and your stupidity, arrogance is a byproduct

Kuyawa··on OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev
Jev doesn't code. It can be used with LLMs to simplify coding and token consumption, but still and LLM is needed. Will they complement each other? How can Jev replace LLMs? Are they even competing?
Kuyawa··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
This is exactly the moment Elon has been expecting to launch his always connected phone, offer superb quality, with unique features at a price even higher than Apple and I know for sure it will make inroads in their market share. Give devs all the tools and the ecosystem will surpass both iOS and Android, just like Huawei is doing in China

Options is all we need, and tools to customize them. And just like Blackberry or Nokia, they will learn the hard way

Kuyawa··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I already know how to code proficiently in more than 20 languages, that's the result of 40 years working in the field and being a 100X programmer. The summarizer is just a tool for myself, I build tools every day to simplify my life, not for sale, not for monetization, like tracking gym schedules or pickleball rallies with my friends, like kanban boards for my wife, they solve problems I have, not you, so that's enough for me and rewarding in itself

And AI does it all for me while I sip coffee and play mahjong (built by AI of course)

Kuyawa··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I created a summarizer for that
