Kilimanjaro··on More trouble for Color: shareholders and board vote to wind down company
> If motivation and investment capital are negatively correlated

At early stages, yes.

PG has it right, small investment enough to keep motivation high = food. Deliver and get another round = toys. Grow your user base and get another valuation = perks. Then you are ready to sit on the big table, with your balls, your morale and your thick skin.

If you give it all at once in the beginning, you lose motivation, morale, and your balls too.

Early money is the machete that will castrate you and turn you into a digital eunuch.

Kilimanjaro··on More trouble for Color: shareholders and board vote to wind down company
Color was (and still is) a great idea.

Giving them $40M was not. Right there you killed the greatest force to do the undoable.

Motivation.

Kilimanjaro··on Dart is ready for the real world
You know what, bringing Dart to android development may be a good idea. Web hobbyists hate java with a passion but may embrace Dart for its resemblance with javascript.
Kilimanjaro··on You keep using that word "meritocracy"
Those who despise meritocracy simply lack, well, intelligence to understand it.

Merit is not about IQ, merit is about knowledge and experience in a field.

A cook can't build a bridge, a carpenter can't rule a kingdom, a ballet dancer can't run wall street, an altar boy can't run the vatican.

We can't know it all, so we specialize, and the more we specialize the more valuable we are in that particular field. So if you want to know about quantum mechanics you ask Stephen Hawking not Emeril Lagasse, but if you want to know about beef stew you know who's the right man. Now guess who would be the perfect fit for the Newton's Chair and who for the Food Network's primetime show?

That's meritocracy, it's not about IQ, it's about merits, you earn them, you can't take them or buy them, you just fucking earn them with sweat and tears.

Kilimanjaro··on Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others launch webplatform.org
Haven't rofled so hard in a long time. Thanks for that.
Kilimanjaro··on Please Don't Kill Feedburner
Yes, kill it.

If there is a market, somebody else will rise from the ashes.

Kilimanjaro··on TV Will Be Apple's Undoing
I can't believe how a 40" ipad with an apple tv stuck in the back with krazy-glue won't sell ten million units in its first xmas.
Kilimanjaro··on Dear Canonical: please let me pay for Ubuntu
The right price for free software is not free, it's $9.
Kilimanjaro··on Has Apple Peaked?
No, it hasn't peaked. iPhone peaked, just like iPod peaked. But make no mistake, Apple is in a favorable position to be the 'american Sony' for decades to come.

Apple TV? Apple watch? Apple console?

Who knows, but whatever comes next, Apple will deliver.

Kilimanjaro··on Show HN: nunjucks, a better templating system for javascript (jinja2 inspired)
Beautiful. I'm in love with Jinja and this is exactly what I was looking for in JS. Already got github/flosch/pongo for golang so the cycle is complete.

Jinja won.

Now, let's get the best from all and unify it in a universal templating system, so all languages can build libraries to parse and render the same templates, no matter the language.

We all win.

Kilimanjaro··on How To Die With No Regrets
Just die. Regrets will have no meaning, no consequences, no aftermath.
Kilimanjaro··on Analysis of bank PIN numbers
Besides the repeating numbers, I dare to say a big percentage of pins start with 19 because people use their year of birth as pin.
Kilimanjaro··on Analysis of bank PIN numbers
Unbelievable how ONE in SIX pin numbers are either 1234 or 1111.

I guess they're right, mine is 1234

Kilimanjaro··on Startup idea list
The pizza button is a fantastic idea as an iPhone app. Show a huge pizza icon, nothing else, press it and get your pizza delivered to your home and discounted from your credit card.

As a developer, here are the interesting bits:

  - Press many times get as many pizzas
  - Configurable default pizza
  - Configurable default credit card
  - Configurable address
  - Keep it as simple as possible
Press pizza, send order to papa johns, get back confirmation and estimated delivery time.

Love it!

Kilimanjaro··on Hardware is dead
So, a $35 device can be sold at frys for $75 at 100% profit?

And you say hardware is dead?

Kilimanjaro··on PayPal Set to Suspend Domestic Transactions in Argentina
I agree with everything you said except voting republican/democrat. They're both clowns of the same circus.

There needs to be a third option and we are not ready yet for that, but very close. No matter how many times dems and reps alternate, things won't get better. But the worse they get, the more people awake and take part in politics.

I'd like a third party, like the pirates in europe, unfortunately that won't fly far here, but something along the lines. Some new people with new ideas that can inject fresh blood to the already dying political class.

The more you fuck your own people, and push them to the bottom, the easier for a populist to come and wash the masses with romantic speeches about revolution.

There will be protests, stronger than 'occupy', there will be riots, there will be blood, and we have to avoid that at all cost.

We are in a perfect time to get together, using the tools no politician has used before to reach people with a real message of hope, to raise funds for our cause, to build a solid platform for change. It is in our own hands.

Corruption is killing corporatocracy, we saw it first with enron, worldcom, adelphia, and others. We saw it again with fanny mae, and all wall street gangs.

Nobody cares about "the people" anymore, only about their pockets. We have to change that, we need to stop that. We need to get back to our roots and dream again about being a great nation, land of prosperity, not about a predator that eats its own sons and daughters, somber land of corruption.

The time has come.

Kilimanjaro··on Will Go be the new go-to programming language?
"C will always have its place but Ruby and Python code bases will go to Go."

Not in the web world. Go will take programmers from the C/Java camp, but not many from the ruby/python camp.

Not even one in a hundred startups will use Go as their main programming language. Ask PG to confirm.

I am an early golang user and once in a while play with it to try new stuff, but still coding everything else in python.

To answer the question: Yes for systems work, No for web work.

Kilimanjaro··on Mark Zuckerberg: Our Biggest Mistake Was Was Betting Too Much On HTML5
Sure, blame it on HTML5, the voiceless culprit. Blame it on the janitor, the office assistant, the programmer.

But never dare you touch a C*O for the failure of a corporation!

Kilimanjaro··on Dear Programmer, I have an idea
Don't fall for that idea trap. Just ask for money. If they don't have it, tell them to get funders and hire you as a first programmer AND equity if they really want you.

It is always better to have something in your pocket than 50% of nothing.

Kilimanjaro··on My in-depth OS X 10.9 wishlist
My only request:

- Add a wheelbarrow icon to the menu bar.

What for? To drag and drop stuff so I can move them around.

* More explicit: to easily move/copy files from one folder to another. From one app to another. Drag files to the wheelbarrow icon, a red circle shows how many files you're holding. Open an app or a finder instance, then drag from the wheelbarrow to the folder. No need to hold the command key while waiting for a finder instance to open and navigate to the folder I want. There is an app somebody showed some time ago that did exactly that. Something like that but part of the OS.

Kilimanjaro··on Black Swan Farming
Investing in startups has become a giant ponzy scheme where the idea that can be transformed in a giant hype machine can bring more results as more people invest in the hype before the bubble bursts.

Facebook is useless, Airbnb will be gone in five years when more horror stories surface, as well as dropbox, today storage is so cheap anybody can have 20GB for free when buying a cheapo hosting plan. Even GAE gives you 10GB free, all you need is a piece of software.

So, etsy will last forever, facebook won't, amazon will, dropbox won't, godaddy will, airbnb won't.

Sometimes I think, investing a billion dollars in instagram is running a freight train loaded with money over a cliff.

That money would have been better invested in a new eBay (without auctions) that would last forever, empowering small merchants and providing a complete experience for ecommerce, from payment to delivery.

We already had enough with social, but the hype machine won't die just yet, so fuck investors, I hope they lose all their money and then blame the economy.

Kilimanjaro··on To Smuggle More Drugs, Traffickers Go Under the Sea
Nop, it will always go by air, cheaper, faster, anywhere.

Learjet is the preferred brand. A ton to your doorstep. Delivered with class.

Kilimanjaro··on Revel, high-productivity Go web framework modeled on Play Framework
I like the routing syntax. Enough to make me give it a try.
Kilimanjaro··on Whoa, dude, are we in a computer right now? NASA scientist thinks we could be.
What if we are? We still can't change the laws of physics, rewind time, fast forward events, live forever.

So no, we aren't.

Kilimanjaro··on 34.5% of US Internet Population Not using Facebook/Twitter
Average IQ has gone 34.5% up too. What a coincidence.
Kilimanjaro··on A proposal for improving HN : it should cost a user Karma to post
Reddit's front page look like neon lights of a cheap brothel, how can we know there is a great experience waiting for us in a dark room?
Kilimanjaro··on Why Don’t Americans Elect Scientists?
We are in a position to change politics in this connected era, yet we don't do it. We need modern thinkers to propose new election systems, new forms of government, new ideologies more consonant with modern times.

It will take time, old school politicians are dying, new crops are learning the old tricks to perpetuate themselves in power. New ideas are emerging, people is getting sick of corruption, occupy movements gaining momentum, etc.

We just need strong voices and calls to action. Things need to change, and no matter what, things will change.

Kilimanjaro··on NReduce online demo day: live and public
Hey guys, I like what you're doing. Here is some unsolicited advice: create a startup news magazine like HN.

That's it. Will read it from day one.

HN vs NR.

Endless fights, endless clicks, endless promotion for your startups.

We all win at the end.

Kilimanjaro··on I quit my job, and am building Tindie fulltime
