Kichererbsen means chick peas in German - I set up my home office to ride out the pandemic in my kitchen and when I needed a username I looked up and saw a can of chick peas...

Kichererbsen··on Show HN: AnythingLLM – Open-Source, All-in-One Desktop AI Assistant
i need this too. doesn't need to be alexa - i just want my sonos systems at home to be more smart than just adding stuff to shopping lists with hit and miss transcriptions (why is "oat milk" always added as "oatmeal"?
Kichererbsen··on Zettlr: Note-Taking and Publishing with Markdown
Except a lot of people (like myself) really dislike rich text as a format. Doesn't really play nicely with git. When was the last time you wrote rich text by hand?
Kichererbsen··on Migrating from DokuWiki to Obsidian
What kind of media? An Obsidian vault is just a folder with files in it - and with the `![[file-name]]` syntax or the `![title](path/to/file)` syntax if you prefer plain markdown (for portability?!) it just embeds?
Kichererbsen··on Window-Switcher: Alt+(backtick) same-app window switching for Windows 10/11
this. i'm on the swiss german keyboard layout. backticks are hard to do as a keyboard shortcut. they barely work as a character (e.g. for markdown formatting) but with a bit of pracitce that _does_ work.

try getting default vim bindings to work on a swiss german keyboard... i eventually gave up.

Kichererbsen··on RePalm: Towards the first unauthorized PalmOS port
Logged in just to +1 for QForth. I learnt _so_ much about computers trying to figure out QForth from the docs (on my palm pilot) in the train back in the day!!
Kichererbsen··on I am sick of LeetCode-style interviews
The last few interviews I've run, I've shown the candidate sample code and asked them to review it. We have samples that have at least one bug / problem per line. Then some modeling task (whiteboard). We have some simple exercises (fizzbuzz style) to figure out if juniors actually can junior and as a springboard into discussing topics like runtime complexity, memory layout and stuff. This is all highly interactive, depending on how well the candidate does. The idea is to figure out if the candidate somehow faked themselves through screening as well as to somehow get a feeling for cultural fit...
Kichererbsen··on Companies with return-to-office mandates face losing their most valuable workers
"poor self-discipline" is quite the judgy statement to make dude.
Kichererbsen··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
yes, academia should totally love this, but my experience is that they just all got used to reading papers on their laptops or tablets.

but I would totally love this. in fact, I have a remarkable tablet just for reading "papers" (ahem Dungeons & Dragons PDFs). but switching quickly between pages is tricky there...

Kichererbsen··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
note also, that the temperature difference is also influenced by the outlet temperature: if you have a radiator system, you'll need a higher outlet temperature than say a floor or ceiling heating system. this is because the energy transported is proportional to area of the delivery system. so that's also something to optimize. add in a decent insulation (less units of heat required to replace lost heat units) and you get a higher COP.
Kichererbsen··on Leadership is a hell of a drug
You know, for all I agree with the post, and that leadership-as-cult is horrible, the question _why_ would someone put that in their LinkedIn title is trivial to answer:

Because they want to get the moneys! Because they want to get hired as a leader!

Because _you're_ not the audience. Their cronies are, the other cultists. They didn't come up with this themselves, they're just copying what everyone else (in their peer group / bubble) are doing... shrug

Kichererbsen··on AI Will Transform the Global Economy. Let's Make Sure It Benefits Humanity
optimistic (slightly distopian) view: governments will step in and build national artificial intelligence machines. OpenAI will be competing with open source LLMs. we'll all re-create society structured around a priesthood / ceremonial worship of a big ai that symbolizes how great your "tribe" is and compete with the followers of the other gods.
Kichererbsen··on The Magnitude of the AI Bubble
unless the reason why these jobs weren't replaced with a simple shell script was that we didn't have enough people for whom such a shell script was "simple".

maybe LLMs will change that: maybe it will help write all those "simple" shell scripts?

Kichererbsen··on Heat pumps, more than you wanted to know (2023)
I worked for a chair that studied this kind of stuff - your best bet is to figure out how to reduce the temperature lift. Due to the way the Carnot equation works (at least, that's what I _think_ it's called, this is all a while ago), that really get's the heatpump efficiency singing.

reduce the heating temperature by increasing the area you're radiating from - floor heating / ceiling heating is way more efficient than radiators since you can deliver the same amount of heat at much lower temperatures to the space.

Kichererbsen··on Gemini AI
isn't that the definition of diminishing returns? just asking - that's how I always interpreted that phrase...
Kichererbsen··on Ask HN: What was the outcome of Reddit blackout?
I didn't even use Apollo: I was hooked on the official iOS app. And used the blackout to kick the habit. Haven't looked back since. _Some_ of the free time I got back has now gone towards youtube shorts, but since those really requires headphones, I can keep it to a much smaller percentage of my free time. Instead, I bought a subscription to a local news paper, you know, for when you're on the loo and need something to read. I feel I'm better informed now than when I was reading reddit compusively.
Kichererbsen··on Waymo says insurance data shows its driverless cars are safer than humans
sure. but now your sample only contains the outliers of humanity.
Kichererbsen··on Dutch e-bike maker VanMoof goes bankrupt, leaving riders stranded
you don't have to be super fit to cycle everywhere: it takes about 2-3 weeks in my experience for your body to get used to a bicycle commute even including a steep hill. just pack a clean shirt and put that on when you get to the office.
Kichererbsen··on EurKEY: The European Keyboard Layout – For Europeans, Coders and Translators
It's really hard to type out (e.g.) German text with the US layout.
Kichererbsen··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
I haven't read the article at all, but what you said just reminded me that I've been using ChatGPT to create Dungeons & Dragons campaigns / adventures / worlds (it's crazy good at that) and one trick i've started doing at the end of a fruitful conversation is to ask it to summarize the discussion so far _in a format to be used as a prompt_. it works more or less.
Kichererbsen··on Eating microwave popcorn increases the level of PFAS in body (2022)

Kichererbsen··on WingetUI – A better UI for package managers
I got super excited about this, but...

there's no `choco install wingetui` or `scoop install wingetui` listed on the page...

that made me mad enough to not bother at all and come here to complain instead...

Kichererbsen··on How to quit cars

Kichererbsen··on You don't need Scrum, you just need to do Kanban right (2022)
Totally with you. But since I'm currently preparing to get certified for Scrum, I'd like to point out that all those things you mentioned above aren't really part of Scrum at all...
Kichererbsen··on Deseret Alphabet
Case in point: As someone who was born in an English speaking community but moved to Switzerland (German speaking part) as a child, I had a hard time figuring out what a "spelling bee" was - you know, that trope from tv? It's... just not a thing here in Switzerland and I'm sure it isn't a thing in any neighboring countries.

The language our script most suits is Italian. It's way more regular than Spanish, though your point "you can pronounce it" (from reading alone) is an important one - it might be tricky in French or Spanish or German to figure out exactly how to spell a word, but most kids can pronounce any written word correctly after their first year of reading. Sometimes learning where to stress Greek/Latin-based words can be a bit difficult to figure out, but follows a pattern that is easily picked up.

Kichererbsen··on Massive geothermal apartment complex is going up in Brooklyn, first of its kind
The heat pumps are located where the boiler room would be ;-) so... they're about as easy to steal as a boiler. Size is also similar - not that easy to stuff into your pants and walk of whistling.
Kichererbsen··on Massive geothermal apartment complex is going up in Brooklyn, first of its kind
FYI: You can actually deplete the ground temp over time, but drilling further down helps as does storing excess heat in summer to raise the temp below a bit (yay! free cooling!). There's a ton of research on this and these kinds of systems are very common in Europe. They go very well with floor/ceiling (i.e. radiant-based) heating systems as opposed to the more common air-based heating systems used in the US. It's also _way_ more energy efficient.
Kichererbsen··on A GPT in 60 Lines of NumPy
importing is a _runtime_ operation: unless previously imported, the interpreter will go and import that module, executing that modules code. that can take a while. it will also bind a name in the current scope to the modules name, so... that might be considered pollution?
