KevinEldon··on Epstein's injuries look more like murder than suicide, noted pathologist says
Bias, reputation, and motive are irrelevant to the claim that "Epstein suffered multiple fractures in his neck that are more consistent with strangulation than suicide by hanging". 1) Did Epstein suffer these fractures? 2) Does established forensic science support that these fractures are more consistent with strangulation? 3) How much more? 4) Is there other evidence that supports the conclusion this was suicide?

The pathologists uses facts and established scientific knowledge to draw a conclusion. Legitimate responses to that conclusion should be factual and scientific. Counter arguments along the lines of the "middle class people don't understand the justice system" or "this guy was paid", however true they may be, don't have any bearing on the neck fractures and if those fractures are consistent with strangulation or suicide.

KevinEldon··on Epstein's injuries look more like murder than suicide, noted pathologist says
The pathologist from the article claims "Epstein suffered multiple fractures in his neck that are more consistent with strangulation than suicide by hanging". This is a forensic claim first, but one that also raises questions about the quality of the system. Mr. White's perspective is interesting, but doesn't speak to the forensics.

Mr. White might raise questions about the argument "Epstein couldn't have committed suicide because of the system", but by highlighting the incompetence in the system he lends plausibility to the idea that someone could gain access to Epstein in order to murder him.

KevinEldon··on NCAA says athletes may profit from name, image and likeness
All of these athletes are going to need an easy to use platform to monetize their likeness. Something like Cameo, but adapted to collegiate athletes and expanded to support endorsements and appearances. I imagine services that support paid fan clubs with exclusive content will do well too.
KevinEldon··on New bill ensures Jailtime for CEOs that lie
The House of Representatives would be a better place to start. Presidents have term limits and draw from the broadest pool of voters. Representatives have no term limits, draw from the smallest pools of voters, and are often rewarded for extreme rhetoric and hyper-partisanship.
KevinEldon··on New rules for contractors have unexpected consequences for strip clubs
Many companies use benefits like profit sharing, child care, tuition assistance, and gym memberships to both reduce their tax burden and attract top talent. I suspect the clubs will follow suit.
KevinEldon··on The Money Behind The Climate Denial Movement (2013)
Not true. I’d agree it’s not a dogma for the Republicans and some Republicans deny or are skeptical of climate change or its human causes. Acknowledging the problem publicly and then working on behalf of fossil fuel companies however is dishonest and counterproductive to fighting climate change.
KevinEldon··on The Money Behind The Climate Denial Movement (2013)
The fossil fuel companies purchase politicians on both sides of the isle. Several prominent democrats, including former and current Democrat presidential candidates have ties with fossil fuel companies. Your argument is weakened by focusing on one political party.
KevinEldon··on Adblock Radio: An adblocker for live radio streams and podcasts
Why does it matter if everyone has to pay the price or not? Why does it matter to an individual consumer how many people pay for the podcast episode? The consumer's choice is about paying $1 for the episode in hopes that they will receive value from the episode such that they consider it to have been worth the $1.

KevinEldon··on Modern C, Second Edition
What about the phrase do you find to be super confusing? It is a short summary (even labeled as takeaway 0.1.2.1 in the text) of the first paragraph of section 1.2. That paragraph explains how C source code is just text and that it is turned into an executable program with a compiler. In context the phrase seems more than clear.
KevinEldon··on Announcing Rust 1.33.0
When a const fn is called from a const context, like assigning a value to a constant, the compiler interprets the function at compile time.

If you're interested in more info the docs [1] and the New Rustacean 1.31 Part 2 podcast [2] are helpful.

KevinEldon··on Charlie Munger: Driving rich people out is pretty dumb for states or cities
It would have been a strong statement about corporate handouts if they had refused to play up front or even better cited the philosophy you’ve outline and how they’ve enshrined it in the law. What I pick up on is the elected officials are disconnected from a vocal wing of their own party and NY has significant political uncertainty and a growing tax income problem that is impacting g their ability to address infrastructure needs. Maybe businesses don’t care or maybe they think Dallas or Atlanta is a friendly place to do business we’ll grow there.
KevinEldon··on Did New York Lose Anything with Amazon’s Rejection? It’s Complicated
And yet the elected officials of NY didn't think Amazon would choose NY without offering Amazon incentives to expand in NY. Why did they do that?
KevinEldon··on Did New York Lose Anything with Amazon’s Rejection? It’s Complicated
NY made the offer to Amazon. If citizens of NY don't want their government to be able to bargain with a business or organization on an individual level then they should take that power away from government.
KevinEldon··on CenturyLink is blocking customer internet, saying Utah legislators told them to
Nonsense. CenturyLink took an open ended option and made an absolutely terrible implementation decision and then tried to blame the law.

KevinEldon··on Time to break academic publishing's stranglehold on research
ResearchOne(1) was founded to address the issues with peer review and the academic journal system.

“A platform for scholarly publishing and peer review that empowers researchers with the

Autonomy to pursue their passions,

Authority to develop and disseminate their work, and

Access to engage with the international community of scholars.”

Harry Crane, an Associate Professor of Statistics at Rutgers, is one of the founders and a good follow on Twitter.

KevinEldon··on Amazon scraps secret AI recruiting tool that showed bias against women
Maybe, but it seems more likely that the model just didn't work.

From the article: "Gender bias was not the only issue. Problems with the data that underpinned the models’ judgments meant that unqualified candidates were often recommended for all manner of jobs... With the technology returning results almost at random"

KevinEldon··on Trump Administration to Slash Green Cards by 50%, Affecting H1-B/EB
I'm frustrated with this kind of response. You don't seem to have read the article and yet you're attacking an entire group of people suggesting they are too ignorant to understand what is in their own interest. The article and the source reporting on Politico [1] make it very clear that the intent is to increase merit-based immigration; where is the brain drain?

KevinEldon··on Trump Administration to Slash Green Cards by 50%, Affecting H1-B/EB
The title is misleading. The article and the source reporting from Politico [1] state that the intent is to shift to merit based immigration policies away from policies that favor individuals with family connections.

From the Politico article the legislation would "increase the number of green cards — which allow for permanent residency in the U.S. — that are granted on the basis of merit to foreigners in a series of categories including outstanding professors and researchers, those holding advanced degrees, and those with extraordinary ability in a particular field."

KevinEldon··on Trump Administration to Slash Green Cards by 50%, Affecting H1-B/EB
This article is an interpretation of original reporting done by Politico [1]. From the original article.

"legislation would also mark a broader shift away from the current immigration system, which favors those with family currently in the U.S., toward a merit-based approach."

"Those admitted to the U.S. on the basis of merit have accounted for less than 10 percent of all legal immigrants over the past 15 years"

"Trump praised the virtues of the merit-based models of Canada and Australia"

KevinEldon··on Life Is About to Get Harder for Websites Without HTTPS
HTTPS gives your ISP less of your information to collect, analyze and sell to advertisers which in turn protects the value of Google's information about you. I think the changes to Chrome are well-intentioned, but can't help but smile at how this side-effect favors Google's business.
KevinEldon··on Amazon has made a change to the way it sells books, which may hurt publishers
I think it would be difficult. You'd have to get copies of the book's content and cover art that are suitable for print and then find a press willing and able to create copies that are indistinguishable from the originals. Now you have bought and paid for 10k or more books sitting in China or some place where you think you're mostly safe from copyright enforcement. You'll have to ship those books to Amazon's warehouse and hope Amazon doesn't realize what you're doing and hope the publisher doesn't look for these kinds of scams and have your inventory confiscated while they file criminal charges against you. You're also hoping that consumers don't realize their copies aren't the same quality they expected and start negatively reviewing you... and for how much profit?
KevinEldon··on Amazon has made a change to the way it sells books, which may hurt publishers
Do you have any evidence of this kind of copyright violation for books on Amazon? I can imagine it does happen, but if it happens at any sort of significant scale (say more than e-book piracy) the publishers or the author of this publisher-friendly article would have mentioned it.
KevinEldon··on Amazon has made a change to the way it sells books, which may hurt publishers
Publishers use ISBN #s to differentiate the quality and content of their books today. Unless the publishers are trying to deceive consumers by using the same ISBN # for significantly different quality copies of a book then I don't see how this is a new risk to consumers.

If you believe in the cause but don't want a red iPhone then donate here: https://red.org/donate/

If you're serious about fighting AIDS I'd consider keeping your current phone and donating the entire amount directly to Product RED or another AIDS charity.

If you're just making a point about commercialized aid then thank you and please donate something directly to Product Red or another AIDS charity to offset good-intentioned negativity.

[add] And if you don't have the means to donate, but would like to help AIDS causes, would you add a comment to that effect and encourage other folks with means to contribute to help people with HIV/AIDS?
