Honestly, I think you're being less than objective. If PG wants comment scores off and comment scores are off then I'd say its correct...

Calling it broken is like calling piracy "theft". It's flamebait and it obscures the issue.

I'm not following. Why does a lack of visible comment scores necessitate your post?

How do you infer comment scores. The order of comments appears to be determined by both score and elapsed time. You'd have to have pretty exact knowledge of how it worked. Is that information available?

You can't "fix" it. It's deliberate.
KeithMajhor··on America Lacks Meaningful Innovation
I agree with most of what you said so I'm sorry to nitpick.

The distinction between "complaining" and "doing" doesn't make any sense to me. The OA's intention is to change the way people innovate. This isn't something he can be "doing" in his basement by himself. If he wants the world to be a certain way he can't just _make_ it that way. At some point he's going to have to persuade other people and "complaining" on the internet is a fine place for it.

KeithMajhor··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
This is completely wrong. I don't know what I was thinking.

It would be the same variable with or without lexical scope (by that I mean block-level).

KeithMajhor··on Poll: Display points on comments?
That is the worst of both worlds. The purpose of hiding points is to remove the bias they create. Showing them to people who are logged in leaves the bias intact while needlessly hiding content from people who can't vote anyway.
KeithMajhor··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
Could you elaborate?
KeithMajhor··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
I'm sorry my original post wasn't very clear.

My intended point was that if Javascript had true lexical scope then each iteration of the loop would create a distinct variable. A reference to that variable would then be captured by each closure. You can simulate the behavior of lexical scoping by "abusing" closures as someone mentioned before. Like this:

for ( var i = 1; i < 10; ++i ) ( function( i ) { setTimeout( function( ) { alert( i ) }, i * 250 ) } )( i )

KeithMajhor··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
Try this: for ( var i = 1; i < 10; ++i ) setTimeout( function( ) { alert( i ) }, i * 250 )

You might expect it to alert 1..2..3..etc. It actually alerts 10..10..10..etc.

KeithMajhor··on Fogus: Node.js should become its own language
"My problem with Javascript has always been that expertise is defined more in terms of understanding its faults rather than its features."

That's mostly just true for browsers. Javascript itself has very few faults.

My biggest annoyances with the language are: Lack of lexical scope, no trailing commas and semicolon usage that differs from C.

I could complain all day about my annoyances with browsers (or just IE).

KeithMajhor··on Don't Reinvent the Wheel
From the perspective of an individual, fixing a systemic flaw is going to take much longer than just operating within it. There are cases where "reinventing the wheel" is just the best way to go.
KeithMajhor··on Don't Reinvent the Wheel
If it takes less time to do it again yourself than it does to find and understand someone else's solution is that so bad?
KeithMajhor··on Stack Overflow: Printing 1 to 1000 in C
Well in that sense I'd say that "ft[j/1000](j + 1)" is a conditional too.

KeithMajhor··on Why my friends hate Google Voice
During the brief period in which I used Google Voice on my Samsung Epic 4G, I noticed poor audio quality.

You can use this now. Go to "about:flags" and enable "Tabbed Settings"
KeithMajhor··on HTML + CSS3 is Turing complete
There's plenty of things that are Turing Complete but that shouldn't be used for interactive applications.

KeithMajhor··on New Facebook Feature Empowers the Dangerous "Comment Nazis"
I agree that using a real identity forces people to be more deliberate. Also, idealistically, I agree that we should own our convictions.

Realistically, people's convictions change over time. The internet on the other hand is mostly undated. A Google search doesn't return a persons online activity in reverse chronological order. In a traditional environment the absurd things we might say as a result of past convictions will fade as time goes by. Consequently the perception people have of us is biased towards the present. This isn't true for the internet and anonymity is the only way to keep our identities from stagnating.

KeithMajhor··on Facebook Comments Have Silenced The Trolls — But Is It Too Quiet?
What stops them from making more facebook accounts?
KeithMajhor··on Google demos driverless cars
Is it that an automated car could break a chain of overcompensation?

This sounds really interesting could someone knowledgeable elaborate?

This is unrelated to the parent and I don't know where else to ask...

KeithMajhor··on Rock-Paper-Scissors: You vs. the Computer
I started rationalizing how you could have won by so much and then I thought about the old apple ad campaign: http://www.premisemarketing.com/images/uploads/apple-think-d...
KeithMajhor··on Rock-Paper-Scissors: You vs. the Computer
The "fingerprint" is used to search a "history" of games against other humans. Based on the move that most commonly follows that "fingerprint" the computer selects the winning move. I'm assuming the "history" comes from within the game itself which is probably played by lots of people like you who want to test it with one of the two possible cycles (RPS or RSP). I suspect that the reason it picks up on the cycle so quickly is because all the curious tinkerers have biased the data it uses to make moves.
KeithMajhor··on New MacBook Pro series
I understand that there are pretty HUGE technical differences between SSDs and traditional HDDs. But from a user perspective it's just a faster component that uses less power...
KeithMajhor··on New MacBook Pro series
I've never seen a more beautiful laptop. What can they really do besides include faster components and add features to software?
KeithMajhor··on Real Life Model of M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”
I thought that too but there is a very convincing shadow on either side of that pillar.

KeithMajhor··on Real Life Model of M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”
The legs would have to be mounted in such a way that they were hidden by the structure. So they'd have to be at an angle and those in the reflection appear to be vertical.
KeithMajhor··on Real Life Model of M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”
Ya, if you watch it carefully you can see it burp a few times when the water moves past that post.

EDIT: I made a diff in GIMP of the shadow. It looks like both the top and bottom left facing ledges are connected. Notice the hard edges between the adjacent pillars.
