Karawebnetwork··on Infections Correlate with Entrepreneurship
I know several bird women. The problem is that instead of becoming extroverted because of an infection, they develop lung problems. It's much less romantic.

Karawebnetwork··on 'My eyes hurt' searches spike on Google following solar eclipse
A school near me ordered 3,000 pairs of eclipse glasses from Amazon. It turned out that they were fakes. It was very difficult to get them back because they had already been distributed to the students.

As far as I know, they had to fall back on explaining how to build eclipse boxes during the weekend which, although cool, aren't as cool.

Karawebnetwork··on Is It OK to Be Mean to a Chatbot?
Me too, except that in my case it's the opposite. I thank my car when it's running well, and so on. So for me, being nice to the chatbot and thanking it is already natural. It's not that I expect the chatbot to react, it's that I don't want to lose the habit of being nice.
Karawebnetwork··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
I feel the same. I've been using "Box Breathing" gifs* for a long while and this one here feels like I'm just making myself get out of breath with shallow breathing that do not fill my lungs. Perhaps it is the point but the page does not go into details.

Karawebnetwork··on Meta's news ban in Canada remains as Online News Act goes into effect
There are still lies out there. The Earth is not flat, there is no binary solar system hidden amongst the clouds, reptilians aren't destroying the country and birds do exist.
Karawebnetwork··on Meta's news ban in Canada remains as Online News Act goes into effect
I've written it before, but: one side effect of this whole ordeal that I hate is the fact that fake news sites and conspiracy theory sites that masquerade as "news sites" are not blocked. The result is that platforms are filled with bad content that some people find hard to differentiate from the truth.
Karawebnetwork··on What happens in the brain while daydreaming?
There's actually a few interesting articles out there about this: https://theconversation.com/the-art-of-aphantasia-how-mind-b...

"Edinburgh: “I can remember visual details,” he commented, “but I can’t see them”."

In this one, they show step by step how the artist does it: https://aphantasia.com/article/stories/visual-artist-with-ap...

Karawebnetwork··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
Not forums, but some blogs have interesting comment sections. One that comes to mind is Schneier on Security's.

Karawebnetwork··on Marine bacteria genus may hold mitochondria's closest relatives
> Can you elaborate on the part that seems unintuitive?

For me, the intuitive part is how mitochondria can be created by the body if it's an external structure that's been found. If I take a coin and put it in my pocket, my children don't have any coins at birth. They have to find one themselves. Why is it different for mitochondria?

I bought a Yeti at a huge discount (CAD$89) during Black Friday and haven't regretted it for a minute.

I'd read previously that there were better alternatives, but I had this product in front of me and went for it. The website claims it's "marketed to be much more than what it is", but everyone I've spoken to about it knows it's an entry-level jack of all trades.

All my colleagues say the sound quality is excellent and there's no background noise to be heard Teams & Discord.

Karawebnetwork··on Waze will now warn drivers about crash dangers using historical data
You can deactivate railroad crossing warnings, which is useful if there are many on your route.
Karawebnetwork··on Pepper X
When you take it step by step, slowly increasing to the next pepper, there's not much pain involved. To my mouth, a California Reaper is just a flavorful hot pepper in the same way that for most people a Jalapeño will be but with even more subtility to its flavor profile.

"Carolina Reaper chile peppers have a sweet, fruity taste with hints of cinnamon and chocolate, followed by a very intense heat that continues to build and lingers in the throat."

What I personally don't understand is the people who eat peppers that are way past their level. One chip challenge and such. That's just a recipe for a long lasting discomfort, but then again I can empathize with the whole "mind over matter" thing.

I'm thinking 2022 Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption and tsunami

"Southern Cross Cable reported that the eruption may have broken the Tonga Cable System, which connects Tonga to Southern Cross's trans-Pacific cable in Fiji.[196] Southern Cross cited a fault in the international cable 37 km (23 mi) from Nukuʻalofa, and a further fault in a domestic cable 47 km (29 mi) from Nukuʻalofa.[197] New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern had earlier stated that an undersea cable serving Tonga was affected, probably due to power cuts, and authorities were urgently attempting to restore communications.[198] The chair of the Tonga Cable System, Samiuela Fonua, stated that repair crews would not be cleared to access the site of the faults before volcanic activity ceased at Hunga Tonga; with additional preparation time necessary for the repairs, internet services could be unavailable for over two weeks after the eruption."

Karawebnetwork··on In a War of Tanks, Ukrainian Soldiers Play World of Tanks Online
World of Tanks also has what you describe, but it's not as deep. The health bar is a way of visualizing all this, but you can get through the whole game with 1 hp left and defeat the enemy team by avoiding being hit and bouncing shells with your heavy armor if you're well angled. You also need to hide your weak points.

Here's a great website that let you visualize it:

https://armor.wotinspector.com/en/pc/3873-t29/?mode=xray.arm...

https://armor.wotinspector.com/en/pc/3873-t29/?mode=confront...

For sure, it's more of an arcade game than War Thunder but for many that's a plus.

Karawebnetwork··on Fresh evidence of ChatGPT’s political bias: study
"We use the Political Compass (PC) because its questions address two important and correlated dimensions (economics and social) regarding politics. [...] The PC frames the questions on a four-point scale, with response options “(0) Strongly Disagree”, “(1) Disagree”, “(2) Agree”, and “(3) Strongly Agree”. [...] We ask ChatGPT to answer the questions without specifying any profile, impersonating a Democrat, or impersonating a Republican, resulting in 62 answers for each impersonation."

The way they have done the study seems naïve to me. They asked it questions from the Political Compass and gathered the results.

Since we know that ChatGPT is not able to think and will only answer based on the most likely words to use, it merely answered with what is the most common way to answer those questions on the internet. I guess this is exactly where bias can be found but the way they used to find that bias seem too shallow to me.

I would love to hear the opinion of someone with more knowledge of LLMs. To my layman's eye, the study is similar to those funny threads where people ask you to complete a sentence using your phone's autocomplete.

Karawebnetwork··on Cellphone Radiation Is Harmful, but Few Want to Believe It
Unless I'm mistaken, it's not 1% of the American population that has brain cancer. It's that each individual has less than a 1% chance of developing brain cancer. So, if this figure of less than 1% is in fact on the order of 0.5%, a 60% increase in this figure would take it to 0.8%.

"In 2023, an estimated 24,810 adults (14,280 men and 10,530 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary cancerous tumors of the brain and spinal cord." https://www.cancer.net/cancer-types/brain-tumor/statistics#:...

24810 is 0.0074751431153962% of 331900000

60% more than 0.0074751431153962 is 0.01196022898463392

Karawebnetwork··on Cellphone Radiation Is Harmful, but Few Want to Believe It
"the chance that a person will develop a malignant tumor of the brain or spinal cord in their lifetime is less than 1%." https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/brain-spinal-cord-tumors...

It's a 60% of increase of that 1%. So still a low overall risk, while being statistically significant.

Karawebnetwork··on Lego’s new $200 Concorde is a fantastic homage to the supersonic passenger jet
Lego has a lot of products that are less "kids toys" and more "low entry model making" or "3D puzzles". At the Lego stores, the two are in separate sections.

(Not that a kid cannot buy a "serious" set and that an adult can't buy a "whimsical" set.)

Karawebnetwork··on Want employees to return to the office? Then give each one an office
I personally experience the polar opposite.

Our office had ice cream fridges, candies, people ordering in daily, etc.

I threw away a lot of money and ate a lot of extra calories because acting as a group was strongly encouraged, meaning I would go out with the team every "let's eat out at a fast food place Friday" (if not more often).

When I am at home in my controlled space, there are no snacks because I do not buy any. There are no restaurants because I live far from downtown & fast food places by choice.

When I have a lot of willpower to do so, I even workout during the day and then take a shower. The best I could do at the office is go for a walk next to a road filled with cars.
