Kab1r··on Why Kubernetes Was a Mistake for My SaaS Business
> the default storage options did not support ReadWriteMany for Block and Object Storage, which were necessary for using my database Postgres.

Postgres does not require ReadWriteMany volumes.

> To better understand this, when I created multiple replicas, the same database could not be accessed by all the replicas. Only one at a time could access the database.

Assuming you mean multiple replicas accessing a single postgres database, this should not be a problem. I can't think of any networked database that prevents multiple clients from concurrently connecting. Postgres even has MVCC to allow multiple concurrent changes to the same record.

The architecture diagram towards the end of your blog post shows multiple subdomains, each with their own database. Each of these should be using their own RWO volume, not a single ReadWriteMany volume; that's a good way to cripple your ability to scale.

CNPG is my preferred way to manage postgres clusters on Kubernetes.

Kab1r··on Scaleway launches RISC-V servers
eMMC for cloud seems to me like a dangerous proposition. As far as I know, they do not hold up well to write intensive workloads. I suppose you will need to use networked logging.
Kab1r··on The hater's guide to Kubernetes
I almost feel attacked for using plain yaml, helm, cert-manager AND the ingress api just for personal homelab shenanigans.
Kab1r··on Rewrite the VP9 codec library in Rust
You would be surprised how much impact the additional instructions can incur. I found UB in a dependency of a popular video encoder. My fix involved adding compare and branches. I thought it wouldn't be significant but then I was instructed to benchmark it and it was significantly slower.
Kab1r··on Google CEO tells employees Gemini AI blunder 'unacceptable'
> what it could tell me about how it was programmed, what internal data Google uses it to train it, and what policy was used to determine what data was acceptable/unacceptable.

I find it's common that we assume that a model actually has this information, even though I can't see a reason it would be in the training data to begin with. More likely perhaps, is that it just hallucinates and tells us what we want to hear or it tells us nothing at all.

Kab1r··on Sapling: Experimental vi-inspired editor where you edit code, not text
I don't know why I haven't thought of this before, but I kinda love the idea of an AST Editor.
Kab1r··on Harvesting electricity from high-voltage transmission lines using fences
I love this so much because there's no contact, but because the voltage on the power line is so high, the inductive power is not only measurable, but significant. I have no idea what the legality of stealing power wirelessly (potentially obliviously), but it is undoubtedly cool.
Kab1r··on Phones track everything but their role in car wrecks
> I’m saying addiction as a term referred to chemical dependency.

Addiction does not exclusively refer to chemical dependency.

> Now it is being redefined to mean “people doing anything I don’t like and don’t think they should do”.

I don't know where you got that impression, if that were the case then I would expect there to be widespread disagreement about what is addictive. Why is it not possible that both dependency and addictive substances are often harmful?

> Whatever you call it there is a tremendous difference in type between alcoholism or opioid dependency and social media use.

What does difference in type mean? Are we distinguishing between alcoholism and opioid dependency or between material conditions and it's presentation in social media?

> Calling them the same word is grossly misleading if not outright lying.

They do share quite a few characteristics.

Kab1r··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
> Core Technology Fee — iOS apps distributed from the App Store and/or an alternative app marketplace will pay €0.50 for each first annual install per year over a 1 million threshold.

This seems unusually high. I would expect that a large number of apps meet this threshold. Am I correct in thinking this applies to apps that aren't monetized?

Kab1r··on Tell HN: Hacker News now supports IPv6
There probably is a way to ask my ISP for a larger block, but I think it would be nice to be able to subnet a /64 regardless.
Kab1r··on Tell HN: Hacker News now supports IPv6
I actually have the issue where my ISP gives me a single /64 and it makes it difficult to split between multiple LANs.
Kab1r··on Tell HN: Hacker News now supports IPv6
Billions of addresses might seem like a lot, but every IPv6 network has at least 2^64 addresses and it doesn't make much sense (to me) to give any customer less than one network.

(Maybe you meant billions of /64 blocks? ISPs could be providing a /32 ≈ 4 billion /64 blocks, though there still are 2 billion of those in the entire IPv6 space)

Kab1r··on LeftoverLocals: Listening to LLM responses through leaked GPU local memory
I've been told that historically performance has been prioritized over security in the GPU space. Mitigating things like this does incur a performance penalty.

> TypeDefinitionResolveError > Failed to resolve types for this package. This package likely does not ship with types, and it does not have a corresponding package `@types` package from which reference documentation for its APIs can be built.

I was hoping it would work with libraries that don't ship with types.

Kab1r··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
You certainly can prove that a system is cryptographically or otherwise sound. There is an entire field of formal verification. Proving that an implementation is correct is often more difficult, but not impossible.
Kab1r··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
I'm not asking them to implement these things on every platform, but it's not difficult to make documentation they certainly already have about protocols available.

It's really not. Just make the "superior product" interoperable.
