I've never heard of Gittip nor Patreon before reading this article. Looking at both websites the website for Patreon is much more engaging and less cluttered. Gittip looks intimidating with all those small pictures and numbers going around.
A good redesign for the index would propel the business more than all those commits. Love both ideas though :)
The entire frontpage should be A/B-tested with some conversion experts. There is a lot of room for improvement if you look at the CTA's, buttons, comparison between free and premium, etc.
WeTransfer (wetransfer.com) is pretty popular in the Netherlands. It's easy to use, only requires an e-mailadress and allows you to send files up to 2GB and as an added bonus it's quite pretty. I really love it's simplicity.
