Justsignedup··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
I think NYPD labor actions is something I feel strongly against.

- underpaid

- they fight tooth and nail for lack of accountability

- they get lots of fun benefits for overtime, so they make sure to arrest people so they can get overtime

I can't say one positive thing about the NYPD union, it is the "anti-accountability" union.

Justsignedup··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
Support them by boycotting. I don't understand your statement here. Are you saying that because you have it fairly well, that you should let your labor be as exploited as possible?

If I earn 200k a year, and my employer earns 1MM a year from my labor, why should I not protest for better work conditions, or more % of my labor? If my labor is valuable I should be able to capitalize on it as well.

A worker earning 20k who is making the employer 40k a year is earning a higher % of their labor value than someone making 200k earning 1M a year for the employer.

> After all, the Westboro Baptist Church's protests don't seem to have been very effective at promoting the cause of homophobia

Those protests are to provoke people into physical violence. They are organized by a personal injury lawyer.

> Annoyance so that bystanders support the protesters' demands or annoyance so that bystanders act against the protesters out of spite?

People say a lot of shit, but actually doing an effort out of spite is work, if they do that, they probably think. This is how all protests work. The 1960s black rights protests would like to have a word with you regarding efficacy. :)

Justsignedup··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
All people who don't care say "can you please go over there, in the corner, where I can't see you, so you can protest and I can appropriately ignore you."

The point of a protest is to annoy you. Annoy you enough into action.

Justsignedup··on Is population density the reason Americans can't discuss politics?
This is silly:

“In my hometown in India, everyone talks about politics all the time. And most of us don’t agree with one another. But that’s okay. I can even tease other people about our political disagreements and it doesn’t get in the way of friendships. Why isn’t that the case here in the US?”

Because when you're in a homogenous in-group you can discuss politics and get annoyed, or heated, and shake hands and go home.

When you're not in an in-group, one side is discussing non-ideal solutions, and the other side wants to destroy you. And then you have to figure out how to convince a friend that their political ideology might kill you.

Justsignedup··on Mazda's $10 Subscription for Remote Start Sparks Backlash
The problem is the trade-off.

We don't get to decide "I like remote-start, but I want to be able to start it from inside the store while the car is in the parking lot" -- That's a $10 a month gain that I'd pay. I don't care about that? Well I can use short-range radios.

If that was the feature? It would be hailed as awesome.

This is the pushback. Mazda turns off a bunch of features unless I pay $10 and the old version was working just fine for me.

Justsignedup··on Mazda's $10 Subscription for Remote Start Sparks Backlash
The problem is value add:

The old remote start system worked just fine. I click a button, a remote signal is sent to my car. Boom. Was it perfect? No. But it was local.

Now we replaced a local system with a worse one. I tried using the mazda start and the delay could be 10 minutes because it depends on network coverage OR just how frequently the car wakes up to check the network.

Edit: What would I pay for?

- Remote start service that will automatically start my car 45 minutes after my alarm goes off if the external temperature in my area is below 40 degrees F.

That's additive, and many would want this in say wisconsin, but its not a feature many would need, so the market is reduced.

Justsignedup··on Mazda's $10 Subscription for Remote Start Sparks Backlash
Can't stop buying if no options exist. I need a car. Toyota has done this for a while. BMW has IAP heaters in chairs. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Justsignedup··on A teacher who made mistakes on purpose
Practical problem...

Kids won't do that. And there's a lot of classes there.

Though indo agree with his sentiment. Most college lectures are useless and easily replaced with a video. I found my best math professor had us do homework and then the beginning of every class I'd going over it and working out all our mistakes. I felt that he could teach calculus to a monkey he was so effective.

Justsignedup··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture (2022)
I paid for jetbrains stuff for many years because it was worth it. And compared to eclipses features et it was leagues above.

That's worth money.

Like I always say about open source. I'm skeptical about adapting frameworks without big money behind them... Because relying on the whims of random internet amazing engineer is a risk.

MS will make money on vscode. Just like Google makes money on Chrome. Just not directly.

Justsignedup··on Gitlab is reportedly up for sale
After using gitlab for a year I can boldly claim that it is inferior to github in every feature with subtle things being better in github which add up to a far better experience.

Gitlab tries to do a lot and never did anything that well. It's just perpetually catching up to github.

Justsignedup··on U.S. Athletes Are Taking Full Advantage of Free Healthcare in Olympic Village
Here in New York it's about as bad too. Except a big chunk of people can't even get Healthcare.

The rich always get what they want.

Justsignedup··on Ask HN: How are you finding the job market in July 2024?
Unfortunately there's no silver bullet.

Mostly networking is revolving around making strong long-term connections, I got my job because I was close to my co-founder, then she reached out to some friends, one of whom was a recruiter and I got an interview.

Another was staying in touch with someone who was my boss 16 years ago, we re-connected and I was able to get prep for interviews at his company.

Another was a engineer I worked with, and you guessed it, got a referral to his company and some prep.

The wider the net, the more likely you'll know someone in a different industry. I have contacts now in AI, Video games, SAAS startups, FAANG, etc.

Justsignedup··on Ask HN: How are you finding the job market in July 2024?
My advice is build your network. If you haven't already start now.

It's how I landed my job.

Justsignedup··on NYPD Coppelgänger: Exploring Cop Data
Defense lawyers can usually tell a bs arrest from a real one based solely on the arrest time.

Right before end of shift? A cop needed overtime.

Justsignedup··on The workers have spoken: They're staying home
This was... 2018. They'd also take an office meant for 1 person and convert it into a 3-person room, with a lack of airflow.

It was bad.

Justsignedup··on The workers have spoken: They're staying home
Sorry I said "Boss", I meant "CEO".

Yes. Yes he was. He felt that a half-sized ikea desk was too much space for people and needed to sardeen people into a room as tightly as possible.

Justsignedup··on The workers have spoken: They're staying home
Mixed bag for me. My office is pretty decent but we have a bigger office than we currently need.

My last job, at the office it was so loud (no dedicated conference rooms) that I was better off being at home, but unfortunately they also had zero respect for calendars, so getting in touch with people was... pretty much horrible no matter what way. In-office was less bad.

I had offices with desks so small and shitty I just wished for working from home at a normal desk. I once had a boss that saw my desk and started complaining to HR that it was too big, and if we can split this desk into 2 to save on office space.

TL;DR - works sucks. It sucks more when management can't get their shit together.

Justsignedup··on Just Be Rich (2021)
That's not a debate I will take, as clearly the US is richer than the EU.

However... richer != better. In a similar way that a billionaire is certainly richer than half the country, but that doesn't mean its the direction we _want_.

Justsignedup··on Just Be Rich (2021)
Yeah the problem is that europe is doing the right thing BUT the US says fuck it do what you want. So it forces europe to have to compete on the same bs market as the US.

In any case, point is: We need to stop being a threat to ourselves, and hoping that another planet, for which we're not evolved to survive on, is a better choice feels like the wrong path. Humans are amazing at surviving... on earth. Because we evolved to survive here.

Having a "plan B" is not a bad choice, because a lot can happen that we cannot prevent. However we can't resettle everyone. Most will die. Plan B is to continue the species, but not necessarily to actually save us.

Justsignedup··on Show HN: A JavaScript UI library for imperative JSX
I have to strongly agree with this. The entire point of react was to avoid all the challenges of old imperative coding of syncing up state with render state. The Dom digging was an absolutely genius idea to stop that nonsense and just render the correct state and let the framework handle the rest.

I wrote a ton of backbone code, and was a major fan of jquery before Dom querying was even a feature of browsers. And once I went react I really fell in love with frontend dev. Frontend is so simple now because of it, while it used to be dare I say more complex than backend back in the day.
