JustUhThought··on Coding Boot Camps Attract Tech Companies
Another instance of tech thinking it did it first. In the rest of the economy, we call these "trade schools".
JustUhThought··on “Please note, the hashtag is for our paying advertisers”
I had originally trademarked this phrase with Spanish style exclamation marks, but then put it in the public domain, because I loves me so folks. Let all your sharp pencils be free! Write baby, write!

And,,, seriously though, this is why technology is NOT democratic by default, and why people must actively, forcefully work to democratize technology based social, community, and cultural infrastructure. If it can't be found outside of human civilization in a form ready to be picked up or stumbled over, and someone gets to it before you, they'll likely claim it for their own. Lame.

JustUhThought··on How Silicon Valley helps spread the same sterile aesthetic across the world

Just as finance has done for resource allocation, information technology is doing for culture. For better. Or worse.

1-2 degrees globally. Celsius.

And the predictions are consistently outpaced by reality.

JustUhThought··on Climate Change Is Hell on Alaska's Formerly Frozen Highways
We are in for a shtt-storm.

But go over to Bloomberg news, and they're wondering why the Japanese won't make the tough cultural sacrifices needed to increase immigration, to stave off stagnant GDP caused by declining population and the accompanying demographics. (I get the workers to non-workers issues in play. Even with that, I believe it is telling, which solutions are put forth. Increase immigration. Not, decrease consumption.)

Seriously, our roads are sinking. Record temperatures. Record droughts. Record greenhouse gasses. But how many times were "jobs" talked about at the DNC and RNC? "Global warming"?

We, are so, f-cked.

JustUhThought··on Protecting Free Speech: Why Yelp Is Marking Businesses That Sue Their Customers
Voted your comment up, but wanted to add,

The "strangeness" indeed. But making up our mind as a society seems like it would be an unhealthy development.

I believe one reason the U.S. has been so resilient is the combination of schizophrenic like policy and action (caused by three branches of federal government, federal and state split, and 50 separate states) and the pressure/safety-valve mechanism that is our election system.

Add corporations, NGOs, etc into the mix and it all becomes even more schizophrenic. Though, corporations add psychopathic to the mix more than any other of the flavors, given their incessant drive to produce profit for their shareholders.

I think the problem-issue has less to do with strangenes, more to do with honesty. I don't believe we'd allow a person to treat other people and, to the point, make the kind of claims we're talking about, without calling bullsh-t on them. Corporations would make horrible citizens. But they are "persons". So if these persons are not citizens, what are they???

JustUhThought··on Elon Musk makes a libertarian argument for carbon tax
Cool. Well put. Thank you for putting that out there. It makes sense to me, given the conversations I've been a part of. And, likewise, this thread makes more sense in that context.
JustUhThought··on We Should Not Accept Scientific Results That Have Not Been Repeated
Science is a tool. Tools are means, not ends. We use sciene to gather facts we can agree on. But sciene isn't the "truth". Science isn't the facts. It a process. That produces facts. If and only if they are reproducible. Otherwise it is faith, religious, or a narative.

What's more, the scientific process is used discretely. One fact at a time. Understanding of our world, its meaning, these things are accumulative, over the entire context of our experience, and utilize things like feelings, and faith, and religion, and narative, to create.

JustUhThought··on Elon Musk makes a libertarian argument for carbon tax
The longer tail pipe thing is, whater. Annoying. An E.V. can be charged from any source. Electrons don't discriminate as to what excites them. With the purchase of SolarCity by Tesla, the pipe is now super short. From your room to your garage. Blaiming E.V. power source emisions is like blaming people with second hand smoke cause cancer for their ailment. It's gonna take awhile to regulate the smokers out of our shared space.
JustUhThought··on Elon Musk makes a libertarian argument for carbon tax
Agreed. That's how I read their platform.
JustUhThought··on Elon Musk makes a libertarian argument for carbon tax
I just went and read the Libertarian Party's platform. [1]

Under the issue of Environment:

"Competitive free markets and property rights stimulate the technological innovations and behavioral changes required to protect our environment and ecosystems. Private landowners and conservation groups have a vested interest in maintaining natural resources. Governments are unaccountable for damage done to our environment and have a terrible track record when it comes to environmental protection. Protecting the environment requires a clear definition and enforcement of individual rights and responsibilities regarding resources like land, water, air, and wildlife. Where damages can be proven and quantified in a court of law, restitution to the injured parties must be required."

And under Government Finance and Spending:

"All persons are entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. We call for the repeal of the income tax, the abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service and all federal programs and services not required under the U.S. Constitution. We oppose any legal requirements forcing employers to serve as tax collectors. Government should not incur debt, which burdens future generations without their consent. We support the passage of a 'Balanced Budget Amendment' to the U.S. Constitution, provided that the budget is balanced exclusively by cutting expenditures, and not by raising taxes."

So, unless it is shown to be constitutionally mandated a carvon tax is not endorsed by their platform.

If I read correctly, it would not be endorsed under their Crime and Justice section either.

Interesting aside, the Libertarian Party doesn't seem to be aware that all (100%) of U.S. currency is based on debt. The Treasury issues a bond, the Fed lrints money to buy it, and then all that goes into circulation. It's not magic, it's explicitly fiat, but I guess they missed that, or want to go back to something like the gold standard, which totally makes sense if you believe in the intrinsic value of gold rather than simply inderstanding it as a convenient means to mark a currency against if you want to limit inflation as only so much gold production per year is possible.

JustUhThought··on Elon Musk makes a libertarian argument for carbon tax
"Libertarian" and "tax" in the same sentence. How does that even work?
JustUhThought··on Protecting Free Speech: Why Yelp Is Marking Businesses That Sue Their Customers
Doing the right thing in one instance of one aspect of "free speech" is not "protecting free speech".

Protecting free speech is about a framework of process, transparency, inclusion, and democracy.

Yelp is not a transparent, inclusive democracy with processes in place to ensure we can each express ourselves freely. It is a business, driven by business decisions, run by business people, for its customer, in the interest of it owners.

Period.

JustUhThought··on We Should Not Accept Scientific Results That Have Not Been Repeated
Trust but confirm.

The entire point of science, and this is not a hyperbole, is that results are reproducible. If the experiment is not reproducible one must take the results on faith. There is no such thing as faith based science.

In order to build a shared body of knowledge based on scientific facts, then, results must be repeated. It is how different people can talk about the same thing, without fearing an asymmetry of knowledge and understanding about the axioms on which their discussion of the world rests. Otherwise it is faith or religion or narrative, something other than than science.

JustUhThought··on LastPass autofill exploit
Given LastPass has pretty much one job to do, protect your passwords, I feel they should refund subscribers' money (a month or several months) everytime it's shown they haven't done their job. It's gotten to the point of being ridiculous how often I've come to HN and seen some new LastPass exploit. Once your password is compromised you could lose everything up till that point in time which was protected by that password. All your money in your bank account. All your photos in the cloud. The confidentiality of your IP. The secrecy of something in your personal life. In other words, it is accumulative. So really, if due to poor engineering on LastPass's behalf, if you loose it all at any point, you've really only been investing in a time bomb. You're making monthly investments in something growning more valuable each day until the day arrrives at which the value could drop to zero. Or worse, drop to zero and cost you. But LastPass seems to treat security issues as non-accumulative costs. Because for them, it isn't accumulative. They keep collecting subscription fees, adding new features, advertising to reach new customers, and maintaining a fundamentally broken product.

JustUhThought··on Platform wars: the final score
The Chinese and Indian markets are just now beginning to wake up. Even if it were reasonable to say anything is ever settled in the technology space (Blackberry anyone?), given that companies coming out of these new markets are sending clear signals they intend to make their own way, given saturation of the mobile market in these economies is incomplete, given their governments' are more explicitly hands on with issues of technology and it's social implications, given their clear break with U.S. policy on I.P. (be it technology or pharmaceuticals),,, I'd hardly feel comfortable putting my money on the "it's all settled" bet.
JustUhThought··on Windows 10: Microsoft launches intrusive full-screen upgrade reminder
Shouldn't be hard to believe. Sure, theirnipen source projects viewed in isolation might give one a certain impression. But, when considering corporations one must consider the whole picture. One must "incorporate" all aspecta of behavior and structure. To this point I would point out their stewardship of Skype. Once a secure platform, no longer secure. Looking forward, consider their motivations for purchasing LinkedIn. Personal information. Direct relationship with the customer. Very much in linenwith their investment in Facebook. To Microsoft, the customer is just as much a resource as any of their employees.
JustUhThought··on Ask HN: As a Python developer, what am I missing for not using Ruby?
Embarrassing confession. I've looked at Nim before and don't want to use it because I think the crown is a ridiculous logo. Not being big on authority and not being big on people that think too highly of themselves, I'm suspicious of the entire project simply because of that poorly drawn crown.
JustUhThought··on Ask HN: As a Python developer, what am I missing for not using Ruby?
Just in case anyone else is tired and drew a blank and needs to google that, the confusion was that of strong vs weak not dynamic vs static. Strong vs weak applies to explict vs implicit type changes. Dynamic vs static applies to run time or compile time type assignment.

JustUhThought··on The Fining of Black America
I can't edit on this device. So, yeah, you're right. Change what I said to,

"I totally agree..."

And everything else is pretty much still good to go. Sorry. I'm pretty opinionated on this topic. As someone with dual degrees in political science and economics, followed by 15 years of all this great country has to offer the white male, and then living in Baltimore during the uprising, listening to my neighbors, marching with fellow Baltimoreans (?), almost getting arrested for holding a sign while on a public sidewalk during a march, staring down rows of cops 10 deep, having motorcycle cops rev their engines with protestors just feet on front of them laid out on the ground, having the National Guard lock down our city for a week, having government sigint airplanes flying overhead, and then riding my bicycle home, to a safe, warm meal and going to my good paying job with benefits the next day, while some black kid follows his mother's advice and walks into a police station on his own volition to surrender to the ppolice for vandalizing a cop car and then having his bail set higher than what was set for the police officers who where arraigned for manslaughter. But yeah, i blew it all out proportion in that comment.

JustUhThought··on Women at Facebook were ordered not to wear 'distracting' clothing, says book
Let's pause on the details, look at the language. "Distracting" clothing? This is the definition of victim blaming. "I can't work because she is making me stare at her butt, and it is her choice to wear that outfit." "She was asking for it."

If you're a dude or a bro, before you down-vote this, ask yourself whether you would applaud or criticize the same person for wearing that outfit to Wholefoods.

The tech industry is perpetually patting itself on the back for have such innovative workplace policies. Many actions or dispositions condoned or encouraged by these policies would get you fired at a Wall Street bank. So, one can not claim that one should know better than to wear these outfits. The entire point of this "new workplace", which is by definition and design not well defined, is to not dictate the individual in so far a his or her personal choices, but simply to create an atmosphere where each individual is productive.

You ever tried working in an office with a full bar on tap, twenty feet away? How about in an office that has two ping pong tables nearby in the open space floor plan? That is distracting. That is also stereotypical Silicon Valley. But hey, I put on headphones, ignored my strong desire to get bent, and was productive.

If you're a woman, please chime in here. This is, to my ears, victim blaming. And this comment will no doubt instantly begin garnering many, many down-votes. So, please, risk a few karma. But, I'm a guy, so what do I know?

I know that tomorrow I can go into work in shorts small enough to show a bit of butt and people will think it's funny, and we'll all sit down at our screens and get back to work. Because, in our culture, I'm not objectified sexually, I am the patriarch, and I control all thing, except that thing in my drawers.

JustUhThought··on The Fining of Black America
Full disclosure. I'm a middle aged, middle income, college educated, male, and am white.
JustUhThought··on The Fining of Black America
You. Are so. White.

"Nobody really expects the cops to sweep the dorms at NYU for marijuana, even though this would probably turn up a ton of arrests."

Switch out "NYU" with "ghetto" and your statement is instantly absurd. These laws you're sleaking of are intended to be enforced, selectively. This is HN, we all love statistics. What is the probability that a person standing trial for possession marijuana who was apprehended in their home and where the primary reason provided in seeking the exercised warrant or reasoning provided explaining exigent circumstances was suspicion of possession or use of marijuana and the person on trial is white? Black?

You can't be evidence based when it suits your world view, but not when it doesn't. The term for that is confirmation bias.
