JustUhThought··on Amphetamine boosts rats’ recovery from brain injuries
Yes, important for this study.

But, my experience with the broader classification of brain drugs and medical professionals that prescribe them is that "unless it's broke don't ask to fix it, and even then put whatever we tell you into your body and let's see ehat happens."

There are some excellent studies showing modafinil to benefit all doctors when performing while sleep deprived. Modifinil is pretty much as safe and addictive as caffeine. Now, try going into a doctor's office with this info and asking for a script. My experience is that 9 out of 10 times you'll be seen to be displaying addictive behavior.

There are a bunch of drugs that, if properly taken, will do wonders for your mental life. Intunive, selegiline, methylphenidate, to name only a few. But, while it's legal to smoke, drink, watch tv, or eat yourself to death or into depression, acting on your own to take these drugs could land you in jail.

If the US is so gung-ho on personal responsibility, let us take responsibility for our actions then, and let doctors be partners, not parents. In an age where inhanced mental or physical condition make an enormous difference in ones quality of life, stop hamstringing us from taking action so we might better ourselves.

The GPL doesn't restrict integration with proprietary code. It requires any code you choose to integrate it with to be similarly licensed. That is the same choice you have every time you create code.

This is beautifully said. I'm printing out.

It's in decline because it's based on an absolutist philosophy, rather than being another tool in the toolbox.

And it's an invaluable tool. For the indie dev that can't hire a team of lawyers copyleft can be a powerful legal strategy as relates to their IP. It has built entire communities.

Honest question, if not Sprint, then who? Verizon is the worst. So, TMobile?
JustUhThought··on Vancouver Tax on Empty Homes to Target Near-Zero Rental Supply
Actually air is bought / sold. In cities like NYC the real estate above land is just as valuable as real estate connected to land. What ends up happening is someone can own the air above your building preventing you from building up.

Yup. Reading the (short) article one sees they still have wifi for personal devices. So, now can only abuse if have a phn, tablet, or laptop (or watch, all these form factors!)

Lots of [dead] comments on this thread. Either, moderators are prudes or they haven't lived in NYC. I once, first hand, saw a homeless woman change her tampon in a crowded subway car. That happened. In real life. If you've never lived in NYC, don't judge; you don't know.

JustUhThought··on FBI director: Cover up your webcam
At some of my house parties I require guests to check their phone at the door. Price of admission. (I keep a landline and am ok with giving that number out as an emergency contact number). Boy does this get the conversation started.

I can tape my phn camera, but what about the other 20 phns in the room? I have no control over them to keep them from posting photos of me drinking or whatnot during a party, photos I do not want online.

From the tin-hat perspective one must do (much) better than consider their personal devices. One must consider all devices in their personal proximity .

The comments,,, so,,, ignorant. As if, all in one place, all the reasons I needed to stop reading social commentary in HN comments. The ignorance, the abundance of it, the diversity of it, Trump would be unable to stop himself from jizzing over the cornucopia of bigotry. Trump bigotry jizz, everywhere.
JustUhThought··on SES-10 Launching to Orbit on SpaceX's Flight-Proven Falcon 9 Rocket
"Either way it's an amazing achievement."

What the what.

We've gone from "holy ish, sci-fi reusable rockets and we's living la vita future!" to qualified approval..?

No. No. This is not about satellites. This is about the primary cost component for transporting a colony to Mars. And it's already destroying the competition pricewise, and this will widen that gap enormously.

Did the Spanish Govt say, well, that's nice and all, but spices are still pretty pricey? Maybe we don't go back? No. They didn't. They said, "Awesome, lock that ish down. We want a monopoly. And bring us more funny trinkets to show off to our landlocked friends to make us giggle and feel superior."

So yes, it's a huge, amazing fucking achievement.

JustUhThought··on July was the hottest month ever recorded, according to Nasa
I staunchly agree with your first point.

I staunchly disagree on the second point. Technological solutions generally "solve" one problem at a time. Desalination solves the fress water problem. Carbon sequestration solve one part of the greenhouse gass problem. Electric cars solve another part. Green energy production and batteries mitigate another part. Next we need to solve pollution from ocean freightliners. Then the methane problem. Next the landfill problem. Followed by the issues created by how much we've changed global ecosysyems and weather patters due to strip mining, covering massive tracts of land with asphalt and concrete and monoculture, and deforestation. Then we need to discuss how we plan to stop poisoning the oceans because of our reliance on petroleum based fertilizers and chemical pesticides. And turtles all the way down.

Untill we learn to live in balance with nature, rather than separate from it, in an extractive relationship, treating side effects as problems to be isolated and solved, it will always be more of the same.

JustUhThought··on Having attained middle-income status, Vietnam aims higher
Tangent. This "middle income" designation seems to have us stuck in the same rut that we were in when using "third world". It didn't initially mean 3rd place, but ended up being understood as such, and thus bestowed undeserved stereotypes. Well, byusing the term middle income we are locking ourselves into a paradigm were we are fighting to keep a middle class and take for granted the lower and upper class. We should instead be approaching the issues in a more nuanced manner, one in which we work so that no one is without their basic human needs being met and income inequality is reduced such that there is no group of 55 people that have as much wealth as the bottom 50% of global population.

JustUhThought··on Curl author asks Microsoft to remove 'curl' and 'wget' aliases from PowerShell
Yeahhhh, because developers like you and me are assigned the IP... Nope. We take a home paycheck but relinquish the IP to MS. What you're suggesting is tantamount to Walmart employees taking offense to Kmart for copying "everyday low prices". Sure, a real live human being came up with that tagline, but do you think Kmart or Walmart send them checks every month for the benefit derived for the now famous line? The open source world is different. In many cases individuals do maintain ownership of their IP. And when they don't, often it is held by a trustee for the benefit of the community.
JustUhThought··on Curl author asks Microsoft to remove 'curl' and 'wget' aliases from PowerShell
It's great to make things better for your users. But that doesn't make it ok to use other's IP to do so. For decades MS has used IP to crush it's competition, so there is absolutely every reason to treat this type of behavior from them as hostile. Is MS gonna give back all the $ Google paid it for Android lawsuits? No? Then it's still just business.
JustUhThought··on Curl author asks Microsoft to remove 'curl' and 'wget' aliases from PowerShell
"Don't people have better things to do than bitch about an alias??"

Now that's a cordial and produtive tone.

JustUhThought··on Can Tech Tools Make Apartment-Hunting in New York Affordable?
Short answer. No.

The problem is there is insane amounts of money chasing a very limited pool of real estate.

My first place in Manhattan was a sublet. Through Craigslist I contacted the person currently on the lease and received an appointment time. I showed up to find 15ish other people there, interviewing in groups of 4. I ended up getting the space. Two days later I banded over first and last months rent a few weeks in advance to moving in to a person I'd only just met, $3,000. The room was just large enough for a twin bed and a dresser, if you stepped over the bed to get to the dresser. And there was someone living in the living room behind a curtain. And this is not at all unusual. And that was just my first place. Got several other crazier stories from my 5 yrs of living in NYC apartments. I loved every minute of it.

Technology can make apartment hunting in NYC more fair and transparent, but not more affordable.

JustUhThought··on NPR Website to Get Rid of Comments
If I add a comment I jnow will be downvoted I simply move on with my day, not bothering to see the responses generated. This is because, even though I work hard to only put forth constructive criticism and in a manner such that my logic / reasoning is plainly spelled out,,,

On HN, unpopular comments are, often, still voted down despite the facts and despite the presentation.

I usually reserve these instances for when I know more than a little on the topic, generally professionally speaking, and often first hand. But, if it is unpopular, it doesn't matter. It's predictable.

JustUhThought··on Show HN: Natural Language to SQL interface to embed in your app
That is correct. It is among the super-biggest-huge no-nos to give end users direct access to a d.b. in any form like this.

Even if this has zero bugs and so will never need to change and there are zero security issues and it is sufficiently usable for the end users purposes, just you wait until you need to change the db schema and some user created a report for the ceo based o this and never told anyone about it and now the report is broke and the ceo and cfo are breathing down your neck to "fix it now" because they have a meeti g and need these number (which, now that you are looking at these numbers, they don't even match the numbers in hour db because they derived some of the metrics themselves from raw data rather than using the metric fields from the db, but they did it wrong, so even if you "fix it" you have to break the news that it's still broken and shouldn't be used for their meeting...)

So, correct, this should not be a thing for end users in many cases.

JustUhThought··on Stories and Tips: Interviews with Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Others
No. You know, this is important stuff. I'm going to say something serious.

I worked on Wallstreet for 5 years and this is the exact same attitude reserved for Goldman Sachs types, and that pervades Wallstreet in general.

But do you know how most people get into GS? Because GS says, "I like the school on your resume and the friends you keep."

But do you know how most people get to go to that school and make those friends? Their parents. Their parents move to Westchester, living next to other well-to-dos, and then send their kids off to exclusive colleges and grad, very often on the basis of letters of recommendation from neighbors.

Yes, many of these students will be smart and well educated. But they have almost without exception bought into and willing, consciously or not, to perpetuate the system that provided them their privileged place in our society.

This the polar opposite of what Silicone Valley was supposed to be. But it's not turning out that way. Sadly.

JustUhThought··on Stories and Tips: Interviews with Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Others
Sure, definitely. If the employer can afford them and wants what they are willing to work on, and either is ok with that person working on their own or is confident they can fit well with the team. But yeah, otherwise, all unthinking praise be to the rockstar programmer.
JustUhThought··on Coding Boot Camps Attract Tech Companies
2nd this. Grad degrees provide a substantial boost, but not everyone can afford the debt and opportunity costs associated with a masters. Sadly, most of those that can, are in a better financial situation (family) to begin with.
