Jordanpomeroy··on Tech billionaire: Facebook is what's wrong with America
Not sure how that’s different from 24-hour news networks. CNN and FoxNews are consciously making choices and targeting audiences. Facebook is just algorithmically solving for the same unknown…
Jordanpomeroy··on Wyoming natural gas flared for cryptocurrency mining exempt from taxation
Do you like gas flaring? Because this is how you get gas flaring?
Jordanpomeroy··on Boys more at risk from Pfizer jab side-effect than from Covid, suggests study
No vaccine mandates at all or just this one?
Jordanpomeroy··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
Social anxiety is the norm. We are all faking it. It takes practice, just like any other skill. How have you built your existing skills? You’ve put yourself in situations where you could practice. Social skills are the same, you have to seek out interaction. Do it at a pace that doesn’t give you panic attacks. And be nice to yourself when you screw up (think how often you screw up in math or programming - and you don’t beat yourself up!)

I’ve seen some good suggestions in the comments about social opportunities. But let your curiosity drive you. For some people it’s a jiu jitsu gym, for others it’s church. Other people have D&D or Magic. Just pick something and approach it with your engineering practicality.

Most importantly, above everything, go talk to a mental health professional and tel them you are experiencing depression and thinking about suicide.

What a time to be alive
Jordanpomeroy··on .NET 5.0
As pointed out earlier, Microsoft has really butchered the proper nouns of their offerings.

If you read a dozen blogs posts about the background for the decisions and are able to hold all that information in your head while you need to make a decision, it is possible to attain clarity for a few moments. But it is not fun.

On the plus side, going back to versioning .Net should help for the next few years to come.

Jordanpomeroy··on .NET 5.0
That’s neat!

It’s also generating code for the main method, which is also a new c# 9 feature

Jordanpomeroy··on Banjo CEO steps down after news of past KKK membership
I guess we all have an implicit social score because we all put our opinions out there.
Jordanpomeroy··on Banjo CEO steps down after news of past KKK membership
Did he? I missed that part.

I guess I still feel sad that someone that otherwise could be a productive member of society was so horribly misled as a child.

Jordanpomeroy··on Banjo CEO steps down after news of past KKK membership
Anyone else feel sad that terrible choices made as a minor are having such a devastating impact on an otherwise upstanding human being?
Jordanpomeroy··on Coronavirus clue? Most cases aboard U.S. aircraft carrier are symptom-free
> But death numbers and hospitalization numbers don't lie.

Well... there is some indication hospital staff are being directed to assume all cases are COVID19 until proven different. Patients that die with presumptive COVID19 are reported as COVID19 deaths.

So agree, numbers don’t lie. But... handling emergencies effectively can lead to problematic numbers.

Jordanpomeroy··on LightSpeed: Rewriting Messenger’s codebase for a faster, smaller, simpler app
I love the tongue-in-cheek licensing that SQLite offers.
Jordanpomeroy··on Stroom – a scalable data storage, processing and analysis platform
Looks like GCHQ didn’t want to pay for Splunk licenses
Jordanpomeroy··on To motivate people, talk about the context of the work to be done
I find ownership to be motivating. Good leaders inspire me to own results, but also empower me to own the “how”. When I do not own the method of obtaining success, I do not feel like I truly am responsible for success. The truth is, with more complex work, good leaders realize they’re at the mercy of those that do the work, because of the complexity only the people actually doing the work have complete understanding of the system. Therefore, the best card to play is to be very clear about the desired outcome, including the whole strategy and context behind it, and hope the team owns it all.

Given a sparse data set recorded by methods that have known constraints and limitations, generate a physical model that could conceivably produce measurements that match the given data

If only there were something we could do to stop the world’s oil dependency
Jordanpomeroy··on GoodbyeDPI – Passive Deep Packet Inspection Blocker / Circumvention Utility
Sorry, n00b here, but a friend was telling me about a new version of Internet Protocol that fixes man in the middle attacks, like deep packet inspection. Is that realistically coming anytime soon?
Jordanpomeroy··on Age Discrimination at Work
In my experience age discrimination is real. All large companies explicitly discriminate against young employees because US law does not prevent it (50+ becomes the protected class).

Most young corporate employees are promoted on a schedule. The inputs to that algorithm are age and performance.

Large companies explicitly discriminate against young employees by paying them less and refusing to promote them without considering their age.

Jordanpomeroy··on What Happens to Your Brain When You Stop Believing in God
In Southeast Asia, people that don’t believe in religion are called “free thinkers”. As someone that escaped the allegorical cave of religion, I really love that. I can indeed confirm that the most intense feelings of communion with God are replicable with expressions of music or philosophy, in the right context. I really enjoyed this article!
Jordanpomeroy··on Censorship in China Allows Govt Criticism but Silences Collective Expression [pdf]
I had a fascinating conversation with a Korean friend. It is second hand, but some of his friends and colleagues live in HK. According to my friend, HKers in our generation (late 30s, early 40s) have a notion that the resistance is led by young people that have no Chinese identity. And this is offensive to many of them because they lived under British rule. Our generation had a culturally Chinese identity that and welcomed reunification, or at least had high hopes therein.
Jordanpomeroy··on Seymour Cray: An Appreciation (1997)
It seems incredible that the little guy could compete on that level. In the days of AWS data centers this kind of disruption seems like a fairy tale.
Jordanpomeroy··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I find that my usage of the web is more like a mind map. In other words, a tree or a directed graph.

I open a tab to accomplish something. From there, I reach out in some primordial/human-brain breadth first search of links in order to accomplish my goal, branching off of branches and coming back up to some parent only to branch again.

For people like me, a linear set of tabs is indeed the wrong abstraction for the way I use the web.

Jordanpomeroy··on 3M to cut 2K jobs globally, lowers 2019 profit outlook
Given the prodigious use of sticky notes involved in Agile transformation, and the apparent commitment to 3M’s bottom line, perhaps this is a leading indicator that agile consulting is in decline? /s
Jordanpomeroy··on BYU Students Value Their Strict Honor Code. But Not the Harsh Punishments
Bring on the parade of Mormons that think they’re unfairly persecuted. Maybe they’ll start another Change.org request to make NYT change their tone. “They shouldn’t sign the honor code if they don’t want to live it.” “Go to another university!” I heard the same comments when the SL Trib won a Pulitzer showing that RAPE VICTIMS were further abused by the BYU Honor Code Office. I heard the same comments about the push to de-list the BYU police department because they won’t provide information as required by state law. It is my opinion these same people would rebel the strongest against allowing Sharia law. How ironic they are allaying the foundation, brick by brick. It’s easy to say “not my clowns, not my circus”, but folks, these people are destroying fundamental rights guaranteed to all Americans.
Jordanpomeroy··on Amazon's Latest Supplier Purge Is an Indicator of Price Predation
Reading other comments it seems OP may have a bad analysis.

Even if the analysis is correct, the consumer benefits by this arrangement. Why should we worry?

Ahhhhh! You got me!

Jordanpomeroy··on BlazingSQL – GPU SQL Engine Now Runs Over 20X Faster Than Apache Spark
So it’s not a revolutionary game changer? Aw shucks, back to work I guess.
Jordanpomeroy··on The Secret Facebook War for Mormon Hearts and Minds
We’re most women in the United States marrying that young? I think I saw somewhere that the average age of marriage wasn’t too far from today.
Jordanpomeroy··on Using k-d trees to efficiently calculate nearest neighbors in 3D vector space
If I remember correctly these things don’t do well with dynamic updates, right? Don’t you have to rebuild the whole tree for every update?
Jordanpomeroy··on CSS Grid changes everything [video]
How do you feel about his advice to people in your position? He suggested that you start with a design for mobile that works on a wider screen. Then use grid to achieve responsive designs. He also suggests that responsive design comprehends browser and browser version (ie don’t always look the same across all browsers). Interested I your thoughts.
