John_Cena··on Rip Your Resume in Half and Other Things You Won't Hear from HR
I thought about using markdown for my resume but I was afraid that nobody would know what it was.

At my current job I have found one person that knows what markdown is. Could you go into more detail for me please?

John_Cena··on Rip Your Resume in Half and Other Things You Won't Hear from HR
You are saying out of 5 online applications you get all interviews, and that is absolute falsehood. 20% interview rate would be a miracle with Taleo bullshit

Maybe you are in a field not taught directly in schools or in some other way specialized and prized field, but don't flaunt your anecdotal evidence around like a puffed up bird. If that is the norm then I am a pineapple with hurt fee fees.

John_Cena··on Should tech recruiters learn to code? (2014)
I have had the same experience but I am a fresh graduate with a year of work while an undergraduate. Currently I am frustrated because I have to take an offer on the table before it expires while I wait for two others to get back to me.

In the case I get an offer from either I will quit before I even start coming to work, and I take personal issue with that. Despite this I know I have to do it in my own self interest. Its infuriating to think I am having trouble with this morale quandary when I doubt any recruiter would care a fraction as much about me as a candidate.

John_Cena··on Marijuana use holds three-fold blood pressure death risk: study
True. It is such an absurd jump of logic. Either the writer of the piece is trying to make bank (views) off of the polarizing subject matter (legal marijuana use) or someone who stands to lose bank ($$$) upset about the possibility someone can grow a remedy to their symptoms for a fraction of the price they charge over the counter.
John_Cena··on Marijuana use holds three-fold blood pressure death risk: study
Then the problem is not with the creators of the trials, but those who are reporting them with insufficient characterizing information.
John_Cena··on Marijuana use holds three-fold blood pressure death risk: study
So they write about the limitations of their study about how marijuana use is subject to the real use frequency, but they simply throw all other considerations out the window.

I take issue with trials like these. They barely do any reasonable trial research and try to spin:

"The persons who habitually smoke marijuana have been shown to have higher blood pressure levels when compared to the general population"

-into-

"Smoking marijuana in itself causes higher blood pressure"

No doubt pharmaceutical companies have their hands in this, if I may say, bullshit. They stand to lose money if people have a drug that helps their symptoms that they can simply grow in the back yard. Replace "Internet of Things" with "Internet of Non-Critical Thinkers" and you get a recipe in which todays society may be influenced due to their lack of understanding of scientific principles in a world ever increasing in scientific constructs.

EDIT: jetlagged english

John_Cena··on 70 job interviews in 17 days
I appreciate you taking your time to respond, I will try to find university recruiters.
John_Cena··on 70 job interviews in 17 days
I have a mentor who convinced me to go the computer engineering route. How do I convince him to grease the wheels so to speak and go the nepotism route to help me land a job out of college? It seems he does not want to do this, and I cannot seems to land a job.
John_Cena··on 70 job interviews in 17 days
I appreciate the response. Are you commenting from a CE standpoint or software engineering? I took a lot of EE classes thinking I could get a hardware job, but that seems like a lost hope.
John_Cena··on 70 job interviews in 17 days
I have a BS computer engineering from GT and the only interviews I have received have been from companies wishing me to sign a 3 year contract or other 1*star glassdoor type shenanigans. I am trying to stay positive but I have lost hope. Ive done the mass submitting and specific tailoring strategies to no avail. Now I wish I had gotten a degree in ANY other engineering discipline. Any advice?
John_Cena··on The bell has tolled for rand() (2014)
Fast? Unpredictable based on previous output if the seed is truly random? Here is a read I enjoyed on the subject: http://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/aspnes/pinewiki/C(2f)Randomizat...
John_Cena··on If you outlaw encryption, only outlaws will have encryption
A very interesting idea indeed. I wonder if there exists a metaphorical whistle that can be heard when they whisk you away to Guantanamo bay. I mean to say I cannot believe that they would even allow such a thing to go to court. The war on crypto has gotten my tin hat on.
John_Cena··on The bell has tolled for rand() (2014)
Well then why not allow it to be used in practical exercises? What good is a lecture without practical application?

Edit: The author does state "Responsible teachers and tutors should stop teaching it to new C++ programmers"; I misinterpreted his point.

John_Cena··on The bell has tolled for rand() (2014)
When I was taught C in the early 2010's these caveats were added as a way to show us the limitations inherit in data type ranges and make us wary of all libraries we would take at face value. I think that lecture was one of the most memorable of my college education. While I understand its limitations, would someone explain why the author is so adamant that classes should not teach it as a lesson on the practical limitations of programming?
John_Cena··on Why MLB hitters are suddenly obsessed with launch angles
Baseball, like any other sport, has gone under many revisions to its rules throughout its history. The only statement you say has never changed that I can tell is the bases have been 90 feet apart since 1840. Pitchers have not always pitched from 60' 6" from the plate and home run distance, park size from plate, varies even today.

Interestingly the park sizes differ to try and keep the difficulty of a home run equal in lieu of differences in air pressure between locations. It is rumored the Red Sox added a bullpen to give their new recruit Ted Williams, who was a left handed batter, an advantage at home.

John_Cena··on If you outlaw encryption, only outlaws will have encryption
As in trying to get the FBI knocking on you door? Parallel construction dictates they'll never confess how or what they truly broke.
John_Cena··on Kim Dotcom claims insider Seth Rich was involved in the DNC leak
Wheres the comment by Fox saying that the PI made this up? Their page last time I checked just had a sentence saying it did not meet their level of scrutiny or something along those lines.
John_Cena··on Kim Dotcom claims insider Seth Rich was involved in the DNC leak
I held my breath for Kim for the last time. I'm sure others would agree he is more personally motivated than altruistically motivated.
John_Cena··on Baby boomers are making it harder for millennials to buy homes
No, but I believe you should be able to live where you can find work. I'm frightened about getting a job in CA due to the housing market.
John_Cena··on The Heroin Business Is Booming in America
I've Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis in my late 20's. Anecdotally I can say I never believed the hype about the effect of marijuana use on inflammation. After going straight in the past 30 days (job hunting), I can say I thoroughly miss not itching over my entire body 24/7 and not feeling fire in my hands. To quantify I have decided to only pursue jobs in legalized jurisdictions.
John_Cena··on An AI invented a bunch of new paint colors that are hilariously wrong
You might be able to say the same about a much older version of buzzfeed, which I think is OP's point. Ars Technica seems watered down these days. Though I have never followed either source directly.
John_Cena··on WannaCry savior is rewarded with a year's free pizza and $10K for saving Internet
Its unfathomable to me how many of my engineer graduate friends are sharing the information of his person on Facebook and other social media sites. Why don't people understand this is dangerous?
John_Cena··on Man Fined $500 for Crime of Writing 'I Am an Engineer' in an Email to the Gov't
"real engineer" here. Computer Engineer freshly graduated from GT and looking for a job in embedded devices. I can tell you on the other side of the coin it's also annoying to be muddling through a sea of software "engineering" jobs to actually find one for an entry level engineer. I believe the problem is that software engineering started as a buzzword then got its degree paths. Also I am under the impression your curricula is nowhere near as rigorous as required for engineering.

I have been on HN since the beginning of my studies and after a decade of lurking I have made an account. If anyone is hiring CE's or would like to help me out of the good of their heart please PM me. I have had a tough time landing an entry job since medical reasons extended my college time to 7 years.
