JohnBrookz··on Are we all trapped in The Matrix 25 years later?
Maybe I’m surrounded by the wrong people, but even amongst my educated peers their opinions are regurgitated. Not even from an interesting author but what they’ve seen online or in mainstream culture.

The only exception being my contrarian friend but his opinions aren’t any more intelligent, just different.

Has this really been any different since the dawn of modern propaganda though? The only difference is now we use it to sell goods not just political ideas.

I think the few who leave Plato’s cave on their own are far less than what we would like and those who remain will never truly be free. Their comfort lies in the cave.

JohnBrookz··on Luxury bunkers to tactical vehicles, ultra-rich are preparing for the Big One
Nothing more than a sarcophagus for the rich.
JohnBrookz··on Plentiful, high-paying jobs in the age of AI
The author points out that plenty of societies have starved and killed their population en masse because cash crops were more valuable.

Then he states that he doesn’t believe that societies will starve out their population en masse to bid up energy for AI because it’s never happened before.

What.

JohnBrookz··on Among the A.I. doomsayers
I would love to smoke what the AI optimists are smoking. In a society where only 80% of people are barely literate and at least a quarter are voting for a candidate that spouts conspiracy theories I highly doubt that whatever AI has to offer will benefit society.
JohnBrookz··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
Surprisingly I’m actually working on projects more. I’m turning 30 this year and my world view has only been affirmed more and more everyday.

Life is a ladder you keep climbing up on. There’s water beneath and it gets higher and higher. I suppose most people are fatalistic in this climb.

I’ve met a few successful business owners and their life isn’t any more secure than mine. We’re all on the ladder unless we have power. Money isn’t power; power is power.

Anyway. I’ve been trying to build a small company with my friend. Just something that will give us some breathing room from climbing.

I sympathize with a lot of you on here though. Technology hasn’t been all that we hoped. In fact- quite the opposite.

Most self aware tech people are tired of the society they helped build and would prefer to live away from it.

JohnBrookz··on What does friendship look like in America?
Having lived here most of my life as an extrovert I can safely say, don’t count on any American friends. All of the closest friends I’ve made have been European, Asian , Hispanic or on the spectrum. Every friend is just a networking opportunity here. Even worse, Americans are uncultured and boring.
JohnBrookz··on Humane, a startup full of ex-iPhone talent, trying to make phones obsolete
I read a few paragraphs and still didn’t know what the hell it was about. It read like a buzzword bingo.
