I started off in web development, doing mid-large size lead generation web sites. As a big part of dealing with lead generation, I became proficient in RESTful API integration and development, along with complex javascript web applications used for analytics. I then began working on iPhone and iPad applications over the years, working on apps for Cie Studios, BuySellAds, and their respective clients. My ability to understand complex api's, also helped me build connection management and caching systems for iOS apps that assured the user that their information would always be posted to the server, regardless of their data connection.

Not sure if this was just an accidental comment in the wrong place, or trying to hijack my post for more exposure, but I just want to be clear that I have no idea who railsprojectapp is nor can I be reached through them. Not assuming anything more than a mistake, just trying to clear up potential confusion
JoeCortopassi··on Will Google Kill my Blog on December 6th?
Heavily relying on Google product? ✓

Hitting a dead-end with Google's customer service? ✓

Have an existing audience you can leverage to get some random Google employee's attention? ✓

Reach front page of Hacker News? ✓

Good news! You should have your problem fixed in 2-5 business days. The rest of us suckers relying on google services get to stare at our inboxes helplessly, waiting for a response to our support ticket (which will never come). I feel like it's almost a right of passage these days to rely heavily on a Google service, only to have something go wrong and be left out in the cold.

JoeCortopassi··on Facebook Removing Option To Be Unsearchable By Name
That's cute. Guess there's always one other option, for people that don't want to/can't let themselves be searchable by name

delete's Facebook account

JoeCortopassi··on Appmaker
"Oh wow, that seems neat. I should check that out"

clicks link on Hacker News

"Hmm, not sure what this is about. I'll just hit the 'Start' button"

Hits start button. 'Add a button' dialog pops up

"That seems pretty straight forward, I'll just add drag that thing labelled 'Button' from the left window pane, on to what looks like a smartphone"

Drags button over. Gets 'Congratulations' box

"Wow, this is really intuitive so far. With a little effort, something like this would be a real game changer in the mobile space!"

New dialog pops up: 'Add a randomcat component to your app

Looks around for anything labelled 'randomcat'

"Huh, thats strange. I wondered if it's labelled something else and I'm just missing it"

Looks for 'random', 'cat', 'Cat.random()', and any other possible combination

"Wtf mate?"

Gives up and leaves

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: Today or Tomorrow? Ractive.js and Dropbox Datastore Api application
To everybody freaking out: It's a todo list, that stores your info in your dropbox rather than the sites database[1]. Brilliant idea, terrible execution.

If I was the person that developed this, I would have spent <$25 on themeforest.net and tossed up a simple splash page with a call-to-action button and a short description of what it does. No one in their right mind is going to blindly hook up their dropbox to a blank site.

JoeCortopassi··on Apple Buys Another Map App, Embark
I'm sure Parse has a great team at it's disposal, but once they were purchased by Facebook I wrote them off completely. Absolute last company I want to trust with the system critical infrastructure for my apps is Facebook.
JoeCortopassi··on Google's downtime caused a 40% drop in global traffic
Wonder if that is the same reason why the HN thread talking about the outage was killed as well /sarcasm
JoeCortopassi··on “People simply empty out”
You are taking the value of a tangible asset from 1969 and comparing it to todays value of said tangible asset. This in no way illustrates the inflation rate. All it shows (assuming your numbers are right) is the increase in the perceived value of gold in that time frame. The original comment's $650 number is close enough to be considered accurate
JoeCortopassi··on Tell HN: The front page of Hacker News has been deindexed from Google
This has happened before, and usually has a non-pitchforky reasoning (e.g. PG pulled it temporarily because of network/server issue). I'm sure it will be back soon, and we will have a rather reasonable answer as to why. There are way to many google employees, that frequent and enjoy HN, for it to be banned for some arbitrary reason
JoeCortopassi··on Vine for Android
Vine seems awesome, but it has a fundamental issue that I just can't get past: I can't easily add my friends from Facebook. Now that isn't Vine's (or Twitter's) fault, it's due to Facebook's new policies[1], a policy that was nearly too late and required them to buy out Instagram.

I don't know how a company can help someone find their current Facebook friends, and match that with users of their social network, but it is one of the essential cogs[2] to usurp Facebook as the dominant social network

-

[1] "You may not use Facebook Platform to promote, or to export user data to, a product or service that replicates a core Facebook product or service without our permission" https://developers.facebook.com/policy/ (section I.10)

[2] Finding existing friends is only one of the essential parts to growing a vibrant social network. You also need a stable and clear platform for people to communicate/share, and a novel feature/s to give people an excuse to try it out (e.g. Facebooks was more pics and tagging, G+ was circles/hangouts, Instagram was filters, etc).

JoeCortopassi··on JQuery 2.0 Released
I think what a lot of people are upset about here, is jQuery entered the web development scene as "the library that solved cross-browser compatibility issues". Now while IE 6 is an obvious one to drop, IE 7 is a little tougher, and IE 8 is down right impossible to drop at this time. I understand that jQuery wants to promote a modern framework, but people didn't adopt it for it's fancy features. They adopted it because those fancy features worked the same in every major browser .

The stop gap solution of 1.9 as being parallel to 2.0 but with compatibility, is understandable, but will probably promote distrust in developers who just need a stable cross-platform solution. I think the immediate concern with 1.9, is how long it will continue in parallel with 2.x before being dropped

JoeCortopassi··on Why is there only one Elon Musk?
There's always been more than one "...billionaires doing really cool sci-fi sh!#", we just only have enough attention span to collectively idolize one at a time.
JoeCortopassi··on Ask HN: Webdevs, designers: what devtools should we (Mozilla) build in Firefox?
Honestly, the absolute best thing you could do for any dev, is lighten the footprint FF currently has on my ram, and continue to improve the api for add-ons/plugins. The more stable, extensible and fast FireFox is, the more useful I will find it for development. But if more kludge is added to it, and it continues to get slower/bigger, the less likely I am to continue to use it, regardless of what amazing plugins are available (FireBug, Web Developer Tool Bar, etc)

If you are just looking at what's best to add to the browser itself, just look at the plugin market to see what's in wide use.

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: Another weekend project "Quick Conversions"
Appreciate the kind feedback ctruman, want a promo code so you can play with it?
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: Another weekend project "Quick Conversions"
I think the biggest advantage an app like this has over something like ConvertBot (which is very nice), is that you can get any conversion in no more than 4 steps. Press the category, type in the number, and select the "from" and "to" from the dials. The screen stays the same, the buttons are big, and it auto evaluates. Easy to read, and use with one hand.
JoeCortopassi··on Apple CEO Cook Gets Deposition Order in Antitrust Case
Looking at forests, I always thought it was curious that the top of the trees always fell at the same height. Asked a ranger one day (before smartphones) about this, and he mentioned how the tree that rises above the rest is more prone to get struck by lightning and die. Now I'm sure that there is a variety of biological reasons why that ranger was wrong, but I believe what he said is analogous to what you often see in certain industries. There tends to be a herd of companies closely competing, and every once in awhile one of them leaps ahead with some new product or innovation. But once they are ahead, they become the lightning rod. No longer are the headlines "Car pollution causes asthma in kids", they are now "Toyota cars give inner city kids asthma", or instead of "Movie violence causes kids to be more irritable" it becomes "Billion dollar Batman movie causes man to shoot brother". At a certain point, people are just looking for an excuse to get mad.

All that being said, due to innovation[1] and marketing, Apple became a dominant industry leader. But because of that, they now get attached to anything and everything, because the link bait of a title sells ads for news and magazines. Would this article be more aptly named "CEO's of Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit, Lucasfilm and Pixar being deposed in antitrust case"? Absolutely. Would it sell papers? Nope. Instead, the tallest tree in the forest gets the lightning.

[1] The iPod and iPhone launched industries due to the amount of polish and refinement went into them. That was innovation. I know that they didn't invent the things from scratch with individual atoms made of stardust. Every new product would not be possible without thousands of previous inventions.

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: My weekend project - Codestagram
Nope. Having '1' as the condition in the ternary operator, causes 'var' to never be evaluated (to avoid accidental operations with getters and such), but the compiler allows the 'var' to affect if the '1' is treated as a float or an int. Here's a breakdown:

if var is a float...

  (1?1:var)/2
...becomes...

  (1.0/2)
...which equals 0.5 and is considered true when evaluated. But if var is an int...

  (1?1:var)/2
...becomes...

  (1/2)
...which equals 0 and is considered false when evaluated
JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: My weekend project - Codestagram
I would love this idea, if it was limited to 10-20 lines. The forced conciseness of it would make devs focus on brief concepts and structure, rather than complex methods. It would end up being like Dribble rather than Gist/PasteBin, and be a great place to browse for techniques I hadn't previously encountered. Think about how fun it would be to scan through an Instagram style list of stuff like this:

############~C~#############

  if ((1?1:var)/2) {
      /* it's floating point */
  } else {
      /* it's an integer */
  }
#######~Objective-C~########

  + (NSString *) append:(id) first, ...
  {
      NSString * result = @"";
      id eachArg;
      va_list alist;

      if(first)
      {
          result = [result stringByAppendingString:first];
          va_start(alist, first);
          while (eachArg = va_arg(alist, id))
              result = [result stringByAppendingString:eachArg];
          va_end(alist);
      }

      return result;
  }
#########~PHP~##############

  $object = new StdClass;
  $object->foo = 'bar';
  echo json_encode($object);
############################

I know they aren't the best example, but I would love to be able to scan through a list of small code snippets (by language) that demonstrate concepts. On the plus side, it would be an easier way to show some competence in a language (for future employers) than having to do massive contributions to open source projects (don't have that much free time). The thing that makes or breaks this project is a smallish limit on lines. Without it, you are just another Gist/Pastebin, without the benefits of the wide user base and additional features. I have zero desire to chill at night and scan through a bunch of random 100+ line snippets that I have no context for, but I love goofing around on Stackoverflow, looking at fancy code snippets

JoeCortopassi··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2013)
In the hopes of making this thread more than just an over-glorified classifieds, I would encourage everyone to leave one of the following comments either here (for everyone), or on the individual posts:

1. If you are looking for a freelancer, list the three most important needs you are looking to solve with a freelancer. I think we can all get so caught up in listing everything we think we need, that we forget the few things that are actually important to get the job done. Once we take a hard look at what we need, and match it up with #2, I think we can go along way to meeting expectations on both sides.

2. If you are a freelancer, list the three areas you are strongest. Are you amazing with game mechanics? Do you have a track record of successful social media campaigns? If all we list is our technical abilities, then HN who's hiring just becomes another place for outsourced development. Lets be better than that, and show our domain expertise.

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ShotBlocker - iOS screenshot detector a la Snapchat/Poke
similar, but with better syncing between frames to eliminate the stroboscopic effect that causes the mask to flutter too long randomly. Something has to smooth the mask switching based on delta time so that slowing of the processing doesn't cause overlaps.

But conceptually, yeah, thats what I was talking about. Interesting read, thank you

JoeCortopassi··on Show HN: ShotBlocker - iOS screenshot detector a la Snapchat/Poke
Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried having a set of rapidly switching masks to prevent screenshots, so that at any single point of time, all the app can make a screenshot of is a few semi-random (but small) portions of the image? Get it up past 60 frames per second, with something like a noise pattern on the masks, and a screenshot may be pretty indistinguishable, while giving the image only slightly less quality for the end user.

Would require quite a bit of tweaking to get just right, but there is clearly a demand

JoeCortopassi··on Draw.io Doomsday sale - 100% off for 24 hours
I know I'm missing something, but looking at the landing page, I can't perceive any way to capitalize on this. Is Draw.io always free, so this is a joke, or am I missing something obvious? All I see is the "Don't Sign Up" button at the bottom.

Granted, it's an early day for me today, so I'm not exactly firing on all cylinders

JoeCortopassi··on Ask HN: Selling Wordpress plugins
Is this actually true? Wordpress is GPL, but why would a plugin need to be under GPL, unless it used actual code from Wordpress (not just API calls). Can someone clarify?
