JimTheMan··on The pop and rock greats who love model railways
I think that's also very true, that no one should feel forced to reveal something about themselves. It's one of the reasons I don't like the well intentioned 'pro-noun' movement, I feel it may out those who don't want to be outed.

To clarify my previous post, I was referring to those who are suppressed by others from expressing something about themselves that they would otherwise share.

JimTheMan··on The pop and rock greats who love model railways
I have a suspicion a lot of the defenses we put up to hide our 'different' and possibly 'nerdy' interests have since become a shield of a bygone era. No longer are nerds bashed for being nerds. Kids are a lot more understanding and nice nowadays? (In general as well, a lot more socially progressive)

Curious if anyone in the young crowd, or teaches/parents the young crowd in highschool could chime in on this. I could be very very wrong and living in a bubble.

JimTheMan··on Covid and the Heart: It Spares No One – Johns Hopkins
False.Incorrect.Wrong.

Are all easy ways to tell if someone is about to speak like Dwight Schrute from the Office.

JimTheMan··on So you want to study mathematics
I think the question needs to be asked, "What am I hoping to get from this?"

If its tools to help you solve some problem, great. If its because you find it fun, great.

But if its because you feel you want to 'better yourself' or perhaps feel like it would somehow prove your intellectual worth, you probably won't get a lot out of it.

JimTheMan··on What makes writing more readable?
A lot of these examples seemed to reduce the word count when making the sentence simpler. I would argue that you would want to increase the word count. For instance, you would swap out a word like 'superfluous' instead for 'more than was needed'. That way you could still give the full and rich meaning you intend, without just losing the harder words and the texture they provide.

Example(and opening myself up to criticism):

"Kyra is autistic and very deaf. She was born small and much earlier than she was supposed to. Because of this she has trouble seeing, hearing, eating and sleeping. Her hand shakes so much that she cannot use sign language to speak much at all. Her parents think she may know a couple of signs, but no more."

JimTheMan··on Moral injury can occur in many contexts and populations, including the workplace
Emergent is my favourite. Perhaps it has been poorly described to me, but it doesn't seem to add anything to the ideas it gets applied against.
JimTheMan··on In rare cases, coronavirus vaccines may cause Long Covid–like symptoms
You can already see the stats you mentioned. The unvaccinated get admitted to the ICU at staggering rates compared to the vaccinated.

And given the spread of omicron, odds are that almost everyone will get exposed. I've had two near misses this week alone...

Even at the anecdotal level everyone I know is vaccinated and no one is long term ill from it.

I suspect the incessant querying from bad faith actors is more of an ideology than a true wish to seek an actual answer.

JimTheMan··on Mortgages are a manufactured product
We generally can't get fixed term mortgages that are greater than 3 years.

Most of us have variable mortgages with less conditions placed upon them.

JimTheMan··on Mortgages are a manufactured product
In Australia the amount you can overpay a fixed mortgage before you incur fees is relatively low. (Ie if you pay beyond an additional $20,000 per annum you start incurring fees.) Is it the same in the states?

Do people just pay the principal and interest for 30 years?

JimTheMan··on Approved Cameras
If you can name some things you like, I'll try to name some Netflix originals that might match?

I think you could be pleasantly surprised

JimTheMan··on Approved Cameras
Why would you like to see it? (Assuming any such thing exists, which I can't imagine)
JimTheMan··on Online Dating Game à la 2048

JimTheMan··on New muscle layer discovered on the jaw
It's always astonishing to find that the envelope of cutting edge knowledge is sometimes far closer than you think.

IE, jaw muscles hadn't been figured out yet.

JimTheMan··on When do people learn languages? (2002)
Probably. And if you could accurately predict the lack of function after learning something, you'd probably dump that subject no?

And you can do that with language instruction in most cases.

Hell, maybe make language instruction more hardcore and immersive for those who need or actively seek it.

For everyone else, it's not worth pursuing 98% of the time.

JimTheMan··on When do people learn languages? (2002)
I'm advocating for language instruction where it is likely the person will use it. Not the end of language instruction.

Most people don't have fun learning a language, especially those forced through school. 98% don't learn it to fluency.

But if you enjoy it, more power to you.

JimTheMan··on When do people learn languages? (2002)
We waste a lot of time trying to teach teenagers languages in high school. I learnt French, very poorly. Have retained almost nothing to this day, what a waste of time.

I believe Latin is still offered in my high school system... A guaranteed waste of time.

I truly believe study of foreign language should almost be reserved for people who will be living in a country with that tongue. Using it everyday and getting good returns on all that grind.

More generally, we should be be more economical with our effort and time. "Why am I learning this? " Should be asked more often.

I feel the cultural pull for pointless learning on other subjects. I am sure we all do. "I should study some physics. Read Feynman's lectures." But to what end, I don't know. My life will not be appreciably better for learning more about electro-magnetism.

There's a yearning in us that pointless education must satisfy. A dream of a better life that you can pretend to be working towards.

JimTheMan··on Unloved by generations of soldiers, the MRE finds a fan base
Nothing quite like eating food from the civil war.

Oh, and he loves to smoke old cigarettes. The joy is palpable.

JimTheMan··on Against 3x Speed
I'd tend to agree with you and have perhaps leaned in a bit too hard on the doing for emphasis.
JimTheMan··on Against 3x Speed
I'd argue that 95% of all learning, is learnt by doing.

Merely listening to something without properly interrogating your understanding of it.. you will end up with a bunch of shallow and untested knowledge. At best, a boffin.

It's imperative to build, discuss, interrogate, trial and fail.

JimTheMan··on Plans you're not supposed to talk about
They lower your chance of getting covid by about 50% if exposed and lower your chance of spreading it if you get it by about 50%.

So.. It's not perfect at stopping transmission but you can see how it would definitely reduce the R0 enough to prevent outbreaks in the non-vaccinate pops.

JimTheMan··on Bird populations declining fast across North America
I'm advocating switching energy sources very rapidly and shrinking the population gradually.

The alternative is literally the death and famine that you are afraid of.

JimTheMan··on Bird populations declining fast across North America
There are simply too many of us and 'growth' will ultimately doom us unless we act fast.

It won't matter if the percentage of clean energy is 50% if we are still emitting greenhouse gasses at 1990 levels. We need carbon zero yesterday to be honest, but the world is only just now waking up to this fact...

The world going Carbon neutral by 2050-2060? The damage we are going to do between now and then will be phenomenal. ( if we ever get there...)

JimTheMan··on The Fifth Age of Oil
While we're transitioning percentage wise to cleaner energy, our sheer growth means we are burning coal, oil and gas at record rates.

It's depressing honestly. The earth is only going to care about the absolute number.

JimTheMan··on Ask HN: What things has tech made worse in your life?
I feel number 3 in my bones.
JimTheMan··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
The tech community here is pretty good around software and a limited amount of hardware. Once they venture into the world of biology, health etc they are only marginally more adept than the general public.

It's also predominately American, so you get a lot 'freedom at the expense of everyone else' ideas floating about.

JimTheMan··on Why It’s So Difficult – and Costly – To Secure Chips
Has there been a single case where a backdoor by a state actor has been found in a chip?

I've often thought that if they were going to do it, we would have heard about it by now.

JimTheMan··on The Teenagers Getting Six Figures to Leave Their High Schools for Basketball

JimTheMan··on New research links potentially toxic fat-protein complexes to Alzheimer's
At every calorie level above starvation, there is an equilibrium weight associated.

(Metabolism (which drops with less weight) + Exercise - Intake) -> over time -> equilibrium weight.

So assuming you pick a low calorie diet for now, eventually you'd maintain at a skinny weight.. and maybe live longer. Maybe.

JimTheMan··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Our system elects Members of Parliament (MPs), who then choose the Prime Minister(PM) from the pool of MPs.

However what that means is that at any point the MPs from the majority party can oust the PM and change them out with another MP.

This has become more common recently with several of our sitting PM's being 'knifed' aka backstabbed in recent years.
