Jhsto··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
I asked friends who play why would Valve do this. Answers were divided to:

1. Valve wants to avoid regulatory scrutiny over loot boxes

2. Valve wants to limit prices; the Steam marketplace only allows items up to 2500 usd to be traded. By averaging out the item prices (knives drop, covert-class increases) they are able to indirectly limit the usefulness and harmful side effects (money laundering, decentralized liquidity) of 3rd party trading sites

Jhsto··on Live Stream from the Namib Desert
Where you do this?
Jhsto··on I played 1k hands of online poker and built a web app with Cursor AI
Have you cross-referenced with the other hand trackers whether the numbers add up? Alternately, could someone explain why wouldn't a LLM hallucinate with numbers in an application like this?
Jhsto··on Like Intel before it, AMD blames motherboard makers for burnt-out CPUs
Anecdotally, ASRock has been blamed also by Intel for shipping motherboards with NIC debug settings on: https://community.intel.com/t5/Ethernet-Products/1-out-of-2-...
Jhsto··on The issue of anti-cheat on Linux (2024)
Similar opinion on playing CS on lower rank levels few years ago, felt it's statistically improbable for MG level player to have HS% of 100% on rifle while also top-fragging. Even smurfs would spray situationally hence unlikely hit the head hitbox. I don't know if these players are purposefully put into low ELO so they get cleaned before annoying higher pools.
Jhsto··on The case for having roommates even when you can afford to live alone
My personal anecdote is that living with roommates while doing a PhD has been the worst living experience. That is, I'm rather jealous how the author ended up with a functioning setup and I wonder what attributes to this. Sometimes I wonder if the main cause for my challenges is that living with other PhD students is a competitive environment of time (constant prisoner dilemma situations where nobody cooperates to maximize their time to work), or if it's the mix of cultural backgrounds (I don't know how to get them to cooperate).
Jhsto··on Code highlighting extension for Cursor AI used for $500k theft
Thought the same thing, could it be a false claim to get a nice headline thus clicks on your site?
Jhsto··on Solving `Passport Application` with Haskell
There was a law change about European Union citizens settlement scheme last week. It's a UK law which is like a tutorial for getting to play the passport game. Anyway, the following was written this year. It starts off by checking if you are a Lisp interpreter:

Changes to Appendix EU

APP EU1. In Annex 1, in sub-paragraph (a) of the definition of ‘continuous qualifying period’, after “(b)(i)(ee) below”, insert “(or unless sub- paragraph (b)(i)(ii) below applies)”.

APP EU2. In Annex 1, for sub-paragraph (b)(i)(ii) of the definition of ‘continuous qualifying period’, substitute:

“(ii) (where the person has limited leave to enter or remain granted under paragraph EU3 or EU3A of this Appendix) any period(s) of absence which did not exceed a total of 30 months in the most recent 60-month period, as at the date of application or (as the case may be) at the date on which, under paragraph EU4, the Secretary of State is considering whether to grant them indefinite leave to enter or remain under paragraph EU2 or (as the case may be) EU2A, without a valid application under this Appendix having been made; or

(jj) any period of absence due directly to an order or decision to which sub-paragraph (b)(iii) below refers, where that order or decision has been set aside or revoked; or”.

APP EU3. In Annex 1, for sub-paragraph (c)(v) of the definition of ‘continuous qualifying period’, substitute:

“(v) a relevant reference is concerned; or

(vi) sub-paragraph (b)(i)(ii) above applies, where, under paragraph EU4 of this Appendix, the Secretary of State is considering whether to grant the person indefinite leave to enter or remain without a valid application under this Appendix having been made”.

Jhsto··on Save your disk, write files directly into RAM with /dev/shm
I've been running my daily development laptop on 64GB of RAM for 1,5 years. My anecdotal experience is that no, you don't need persistent storage for most things. In fact, often it's in your way -- it clutters the system over time by causing configuration errors and weird undefined program states. When you can just reboot and all works again it's great. Never going back.
Jhsto··on Save your disk, write files directly into RAM with /dev/shm
Speaking of RAM and disks, does anyone know what happens if you structure LVM volume such that there is a RAM based tmpfs as a front cache? Consistency issues aside, could it increase performance? Suppose I have an application that behaves such that it has very IO heavy write buffer of around 100GB with 10x or so NVMe backed storage for more rarely used data. Would you do something else? The main problem I have currently is that the NVMes overheat occasionally from high IOPS which adds a lot of latency variance.
Jhsto··on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
Fairphone also sent some Linux patches: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-pm/20250625-sm7635-fp6-initial...
Jhsto··on How I like to install NixOS (declaratively)
Another option is to run it ephemerally from the RAM. I have been doing this for my laptop and servers for years now. You can do so by declaring the following: https://github.com/ponkila/HomestakerOS/blob/main/nixosModul...

You need to then have a flake which defines a "package" like this: https://github.com/jhvst/nix-config/blob/main/flake.nix#L117...

Now you can run 'nix build .#starlabs' which will create you the files needed for kexec / PXE booting.

You can also write tests that these images actually boot ok: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/nixostest-with-flake-configura...

I started working on this stuff because I needed to somehow reliably update my homeserver. I live abroad 50 weeks a year, so I needed something reliable because I can't assume I have physical access to the computer. Even when the BMC firmware got screwed by ASRock motherboard firmware, I didn't need to sweat.

Now for the shameless plug: my company created a PXE server module which also supports flakes that assumes this ephemeral setup. It's described in here: https://github.com/majbacka-labs/nixos.fi

Jhsto··on What Is HDR, Anyway?
I've been thinking of moving out of the Apple ecosystem but after seeing Severance on my iPhone Pro screen I feel like I want the keep the option to have the same HDR experience for movies specifically. With HDR support landing in Linux just a month ago I'm inclined to spend on a good monitor. However, I have IPS HDR 600 monitor but I never felt that the screen was as glorious as the iPhone screen.

I'd also be interested in hearing whether it makes sense to look into OLED HDR 400 screens (Samsung, LG) or is it really necessary to get an Asus ProArt which can push the same 1000 nits average as the Apple XDR display (which, mind you, is IPS).

Jhsto··on Social drinking also a well-worn path to alcohol use disorder
>I think if I drank more often, my desire for it would not change.

I highly doubt this would be the case (as in, alcohol doesn't work like that). Let's say that for every 10kg of your bodyweight you drink 2 beers per night (330ml), then by the time you get to day four you might be more worried about not getting a drink.

Jhsto··on Daily driving a Linux phone, but why?
I have been thinking daily driving Linux phone just to manage smartphone addiction. My first step was to get rid of my MacBook. Now, a year later, I think I'm ready to get rid of the Apple Watch. With the watch, it has been surprising how much you think you need to record your HR and workouts -- but it's just another bogus number that you don't need. Later the year I think I'll be finally ready for the phone. This would happen by getting an iPad mini first, which would stay at home while I go to work with the phone only. I think the hard class of apps to get rid of is mainly "Travel", plus password manager (I use passage but the transition will take time) + Find My. But travel is very much planned in my life, so for those occasions I can take my iPad mini with me.
Jhsto··on How long does it take to create a new habit? (2015)
Maybe it's still a honeymoon thing for me but I've been trying out keto diet for few weeks and, anecdotally, now whenever I eat carbs I get a weird high. If you told me that people started farming to do it consistently, I'd believe you. Similarly, if I avoid carbs at all cost even for a day, by night I feel so bad that I must have some. Point is that as far as I can tell eating carbs is a habit/addiction as well, but much good has come from maintaining it.
Jhsto··on Why a plane turned around when a passenger lost a phone midflight
I thought that even the cabin crew did not know what's burning. There's also the feeling of helplessness -- you know something is wrong but you are not told that something is wrong. The hysteria at the back of the plane could have been alleviated by telling that the situation is under control. When the plane was landing, I could see fire trucks, an ambulance, and police of some sort driving in parallel to the plane to rush in. I only found out about the reason from the news later.
Jhsto··on Why a plane turned around when a passenger lost a phone midflight
It was United.
Jhsto··on Why a plane turned around when a passenger lost a phone midflight
I was on a flight where we had a fire inside of the cabin because of some mobile device. What I found weird was the only piece of communication being that "we are returning", around 15 minutes after the plane had turned back. I was able to smell the smoke at that point.
Jhsto··on Control iPhone with the movement of your eyes
Anyone knows if there's a chance that the color of your eyes affects how well this feature works?
Jhsto··on GLP-1 for Everything
I wonder if it's about more stable glucose levels hence avoidance of cravings. Anecdotally, alcohol and nicotine cravings seem to pass me whenever I have a particularly fast acting (low osmolality) carbohydrate supplement.
Jhsto··on NixOS, Raspberry Pi and Me
I fixed my device tree problems on NixOS by PXE-booting the RPi4, so I get to handle the dtbs using a TFTP server: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-coreos-device-...

For NixOS specific instructions, see https://juuso.dev/blogPosts/ipxe-rpi4/ipxe-nixos-edk2-uefi-b...

Disclaimer is that nowadays I moved on from ARM (at least for non-UEFI systems), because I feel like working with the preboot environments is just not worth the hassle if you need to reliably boot remote servers.

Jhsto··on Drake Releases 100gb Data Dump
Todays Darknet Diaries might explain: https://overcast.fm/+ABI2YYLuUFA

Basically, it seems like unreleased versions, samples, etc working directory content of musicians are very coveted online.

I would probably compare this to what programmers call "working in public" when they just dump progress constantly on GitHub.

Jhsto··on Radicle is an open source, peer-to-peer code collaboration stack built on Git
Unless we'd default to mailing lists and email patchsets would be more used, similar to sourcehut.
Jhsto··on IBM nearing a buyout deal for HashiCorp, source says
There was an interesting point in the recent Acquired podcast about Microsoft vs IBM. Supposedly IBM revenue only decreased after 2012 and Microsoft only passed it in revenue in 2015.
Jhsto··on ISPs can charge extra for fast gaming under FCC's Internet rules, critics say
The title seems to not include that this is about 5G. The next question then is how many gamers really use mobile broadband in the US? Ericsson making the claim that people are willing to pay more for low latency might be the case in the Nordics where uncapped mobile broadband starts from 3 euros/m and fiber is not always available.
Jhsto··on BTFS: BitTorrent Filesystem
Just the other week I used Nix on my laptop to derive PXE boot images, uploaded those to IPFS, and netbooted my server in another country over a public IPFS mirror. The initrd gets mounted as read-only overlayfs on boot. My configs are public: https://github.com/jhvst/nix-config

I plan to write documentation of the IPFS process including the PXE router config later at https://github.com/majbacka-labs/nixos.fi -- we might also run a small public build server for peoples Flake configs, who are interested in trying out this process.

Jhsto··on Tell HN: Bypass Paywalls repository is gone
https://radicle.xyz/ most likely.
Jhsto··on Fast, Declarative, Reproduble and Composable Developer Environments Using Nix
Devenv is often used with direnv, which just means that the environment is activated when you cd in to the folder. This is arguably a bit more than just a docker.
