Jesus_Jones··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Posted Rants About the Company Online
This got too long, but to summarize my point there's a vast amount of content on the internet and those people feeling that someone not finding them via google is a cheat are over-reacting. The world is so big that there are lots of people no one ever hears about, who may be doing interesting stuff. Feeling that people don't find your cool stuff is a complaint you can make against google, facebook, instagram, maybe bing if anyone used it, any indexing site.

For every person that youtube or whatever other ranking site give them lots of viewers, there are millions of people posting stuff that hardly anyone ever sees. It's not a conspiracy that no one really watches my son's youtube game discussion site. There are thousands of videos every day created with similar content.

So all these people mad that they don't have lots of viewers, a bunch of that can be explained because there are lots of people doing the same thing.

Now for the people who used to get lots of views and then things drop off after a google ranking change, sure, the change must have had some impact. So your site with videos in say Farsi about how to exercise with a particular style of workouts, probably there are 100 other people doing videos for working out in Farsi or whatever. There's basically no way google or anyone else can balance it out. They make changes that they think will serve their users. Google works for a lot of people because it's a good clearing house. But it's good for people cause they can find things they want. Google cannot show all the thousands of videos every day on say fortnight. But my son's video game discussion site hardly gets any views. but thats because he's not famous and he's not doing anything that other people are.

I also think people try to make their site go higher by paying for links to their site. In a previous job, (I heard) they paid someone who was a wikipedia editor to create entries for their company and the founder, of course this is a known problem.

I think I'm sounding like a google or big company apologist. I have seen a similar issue in phone apps. My friend had a bunch of android and ios programs for tracking various things that he sold for a dollar, and the ideas got copied by people doing similar things multiple times and now he's just one person is a sea of solutions. He used to get a few $100 a month from people buying his $1 software, now he gets $5. It's not a conspiracy.

Jesus_Jones··on Intel brings a six-core i9 CPU to laptops
Because people wanted to take them around. At first, I think the dev system fit in 16 gig macbook pro without any trouble and it was a startup, so it was just natural to say that's all you need. Then the dev env started getting a little bit bigger.

I showed up at the company and noticed you couldn't run the vm for a test and compile separately at the same time. Next I found out I couldn't have a bunch of tabs open while doing dev. So that was painful, and I got a desktop. The existing people who were used to how things worked said you shouldn't have a bunch of tabs open, don't do that and it works fine (oh and don't run any tests while compiling).

Then as memory use kept up even the at most 4 tabs people found they kept running out of memory and they bought a few 32 gig laptops and suddenly things worked again.

A few of us have desktops, most people are struggling with 16 gig notebooks and they started buying 32 gig notebooks for people that want them.

It'll be this decade or next, never you worry.
Jesus_Jones··on Tesla’s Musk Takes Charge of Model 3 Production as Problems Persist
I would think you always sell the cheap model after selling the expensive ones, especially if you are a smaller company with less money coming through the pipes.
Jesus_Jones··on Tesla’s Musk Takes Charge of Model 3 Production as Problems Persist
of course the dc-x was yet another different flight vehicle that wasn't given enough time to be successful. and it was a bit different in that there wasn't a separate capsule from the launch rocket. if musk had his passionate engineering self behind it he could have made it work.
Jesus_Jones··on Tesla’s Musk Takes Charge of Model 3 Production as Problems Persist
Even if they have lots of experience, they failed to see how that the market was going to have to seriously build evs. It took an 'idiot outsider' like Musk to push it as far as it can go. and now we know that separately from the business success of tesla that it's possible to make successful and interesting electric cars like teslas, but also other companies have interesting cars.
Jesus_Jones··on Intel brings a six-core i9 CPU to laptops
ah, thanks for the correction. so when is it expected, if not in 18 months? I've been waiting for > 16 gig for literally 2+ yaers.
Jesus_Jones··on Amazon Asking Cities for Their High Schoolers' SAT Scores
Your comment is very on point. The situation where more elite students take certain tests makes it much harder to understand skills and achievements that come from different schools.
Jesus_Jones··on US Navy remotely lands F/A-18 Super Hornet on carrier deck
What could go wrong with remote control technology over our important military assets? Of course the answer is a lot, especially in wartime. For all the paranoid people thinking that the military or police or whatever US security service will take over the country in a secret coup, the people who make up those forces are an important bulwark against tyranny from within or without.

It's very dangerous to be a pilot and a soldier but as a software engineer I don't know how I could ever feel safe in a world without people making decisions about how to use weapons.

Jesus_Jones··on Intel brings a six-core i9 CPU to laptops
Yes, for devs with vms for compiling and testing like my team does, 16gb is not enough. Thus we are moving off macbooks. You can argue that you shouldn't do that on a laptop, you should have a desktop that you always connect to, but that's not how we prefer to do it. If there was no laptop with more than say 8 gig we'd probably have gone that way. 16gb is almost enough.
Jesus_Jones··on Intel brings a six-core i9 CPU to laptops
If the next gen was close, it would not be an issue. But because it's way behind and one commenter up above stated its 18 months out. So it's an issue.

My dev team is finally abandoning mac books for lenovo laptops with 32 gig.

Yes! I agree, it's like propaganda that someone else could use to defend c.a. It doesn't come across as genuine, and based on leaked interviews via hidden camera with ca execs talking to reporters, its hard to accept anything written like this without guessing it was paid for.
Jesus_Jones··on [dead]
I feel this author is basically making arguments about terminology to deflect attention away from the basic issues. He's also wrong in substance, because I've read many many other articles about this that describe the specifics. Anyone who pays a tiny amount of attention understands they didn't hack facebook, but instead took advantage of facebook's ridiculous ability to harvest someone's friend graph and their friends, and easily develop a giant network by doing nothing more than putting out a stupid survey app. But this is still a horrible invasion of people's privacy, and it demonstrated how badly facebook treat's people's information.

Will this guy next write an article titled "grindr is doing people a favor by selling heir hiv status"? Or they weren't "selling it"? In any case, it's not persuasive.

Jesus_Jones··on Banning Netflix, Amazon from Festivals and Awards Is Wrong
Remember that netflix also wanted to put a movie in us theaters. One chain said okay. Then the other movie companies said we will blacklist you and not send you an movies to show. This is just about commercial competition, the 'real movie theaters' are trying to block netflix et al. Netflix should just buy their own damn theater in LA and show movies there to get them on all the awards shows.

Hah, then the communists, terrorists, etc have won. One side likes science and facts, today at least.
Jesus_Jones··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
they are already driving them, they seem to have about the range. you can read about this in tesla newsgroup sites, like tmc.
Jesus_Jones··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
1. tesla superchargers share a the 'bank of chargers' at 2 spots. look for 2a, 2b, those two spots are shared. pick one that doesn't have a paired spot in use 2. they charger at a higher rate when your car has a lower charge. 3. they cool the battery when charging to prevent harm, if its really hot this can lower charge ability. there's a similar thing with cold temps

They are reliable and predictable with those factors.

There is already extensive discussion of how to charge higher power systems like trucks, tesla has a plan, google for details. the easiest thing is just several superchargers together. by the way, a supercharger spot is just a bank of regular chargers working together, feeding dc directly to your car's battery. its not magic, it's all pretty easy to understand once you get some basic info.

Jesus_Jones··on Nvidia Playing with Fire
This does feel like the equivalent of Microsoft's old "pay way less per copy if you just pay us for every computer you ship instead of pay us for every computer that actually ship's with Microsoft". I was at microsoft when that was going (working as a dev with nothing to do with this). but that was really effective at getting companies to be less interested in shipping other OS'.
Jesus_Jones··on Wyoming Passes Forward-Thinking Computer Science Education Bill
If it's so windy, and they have experience in energy fields, a natural thing would be to use that to develop new and better wind based power gen. Of course, it's really hard to embrace the new thing that is killing the old thing you made lots of money from.

Jesus_Jones··on Elwha: Roaring back to life (2016)

Jesus_Jones··on Tell HN: I just wanted to say: thank you, Hacker News
Glad to hear it worked out for you! I think there's a lot of potential for people who non-traditional students who are capable of focusing on science, math, logic, getting retrained into CS and have a good career. We definitely need more people in the field, and I'm sure you bring a slightly different perspective coming in at a little bit later age.
Jesus_Jones··on Corporate Governance: On the Front Line of America’s Cyber War
I'm endlessly frustrated that company after company gets their email hacked. And private individuals. It's just the case that you stop stop people from using windows or macos, and opening word docs or spreadsheets sent in email. Put those people on chrome os, and use 2 factor email authentication on google. Give them a yubi key to put in their desktop, a yubi key for their keychain, a yubi key for use at home, an authenticator app on their phone. You can still open those enclosures in chromeos. the 2 factor auth makes it tremendously harder to get their email credentials.

Since they are using chromeos, they won't get hacked when they open an enclosure. The forthcoming support for running vms in chromeos will let people who must run their office's crappy and dangerous c# app if they must. /end of rant

Jesus_Jones··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
Thanks for the update. I can't add a post-comment to my question because it's been to long, but I was wrong.
Jesus_Jones··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
My understanding from reading that was that even on a "public" project the owner can delete it, change it's status, and it disappears from availability.
Jesus_Jones··on Airbus moves 130k employees from Microsoft Office to GSuite
6 months ago at my last company they used office and we used office 365 to collaboratively edit some word docs and we had a problem where the docs kept getting locked and others couldn't edit them. this doesn't happen with google docs. if you have a big collaborative doc its a problem, or was 6 months ago. Did it get fixed?
Jesus_Jones··on Airbus moves 130k employees from Microsoft Office to GSuite
office 365 is far inferior to google docs for online collaborative document editing. You can lock the doc in office, you get into situations where it's very hard to safely have people collaborate on docs.
Jesus_Jones··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
This is not what people expect, so that's one obvious reason it's very likely the wrong decision. I would have never known this. If you are relying on a public external product on github, you have to go several painful steps to make it 'safe', you have to re-upload it, and there's no good reason to make people do it. It's a giant disincentive to fork things on github. To be safe of finding things later, there will probably be another git repo website that will agree to "host" your forked projects safely, so that you can access them.

I understand on the other side, there's value in being able to stop people who forked your code. But it's a very weak stop-ability, because they could just keep the code locally and re-upload.

Jesus_Jones··on iHeartRadio owner files for bankruptcy
That's really my question too. I can guess that if you are say the ceo with a golden parachute agreement if your company is bought out, then you want to 'sell' into this, cause you win, and you leave. But it's terrible for shareholders (eventual ones at least) and for employees, and I don't know if I've ever used this phrase, but it's terrible for the world, for my country.
