JeremyBanks··on Researchhub: GitHub for Science
To help bring this nascent community together and incentivize contribution to the platform, a newly created ERC20 token, ResearchCoin (RSC), has been created. Users receive RSC for uploading new content to the platform, as well as for summarizing and discussion research. Rewards for contributions are proportionate to how valuable the community perceives the actions to be - as measured by upvotes.

This is a terrible idea and you should feel bad.

JeremyBanks··on Freenode IRC operators now engaging in routine abuses of power
You are losing trust with every word.
JeremyBanks··on Cloudflare’s CAPTCHA replacement with FIDO2/WebAuthn is a bad idea
It's not clear to me that Google still gives a fuck about solving search/organizing the world's information and make it useful. The mess they've incentivized the web to become is very profitable for them.
JeremyBanks··on WhatsApp will progressively kill features until users accept new privacy policy
You misspelled "signal"
JeremyBanks··on Analytics suggest 96% of users leave app tracking disabled in iOS 14.5
Your choice to be ignorant about the contact tracing frameworks is your own, but please stop spreading misinformation: https://www.google.com/covid19/exposurenotifications/#exposu...

There were many locations who built their own apps that did not follow this privacy model, or used it incorrectly, but for most cases "your location data being put into some database" is not accurate.

JeremyBanks··on MacFlim: Full-motion video on B&W Macs
This makes me want to dig my old Mac Plus out of the garage. Very cool!
JeremyBanks··on Inside the all-hands meeting that led to a third of Basecamp employees quitting
"Sure, I'm willing to do it."

"So do it!"

"Proud boys, stand by."

JeremyBanks··on Inside the all-hands meeting that led to a third of Basecamp employees quitting
Were they entirely unprepared for this meeting?

"I condemn white supremacy" should not have been difficult words to say. It does not require careful phrasing. Particularly right now, so shortly after famously Trump refused to say it in the debate, and then weeks later we had the attack on the capitol.

JeremyBanks··on New Spectre Vulnerability Beats Mitigations, Performance to Badly Drop After Fix
It's only theoretical until we discover that some state agency got it working three years ago and has been using it to quietly pwn activists since.
JeremyBanks··on Audacity Aquired by Muse Group
Sure, but what are they acquiring?
JeremyBanks··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
This sounds like you've only read DHH's description of events. Read the Platformer article for more context.
JeremyBanks··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
You may see principles, but I just see ego.
JeremyBanks··on Google have declared Droidscript is malware
Android's fine-grained permissions system isn't a good fit for something like Droidscript; one script could use a permission for valid reasons, then another could do something bad.
JeremyBanks··on 4chan founder Chris Poole has left Google
Without censorship... so you want a place with nazis? 'cause that's what happens.
JeremyBanks··on DreamWorld (YC W21) MMO raises all red flags
They're really leaning on it, too. Practically the first thing in their kickstarter pitch. Although they can't write the name correctly...

We're a YCombinator Company.

https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/22656

YCombinator is where Twitch, AirBnB, Doordash, and far more all got their starts! https://www.ycombinator.com/

We know MMOs cannot be built with just $10K. We've secured the majority of our funding from some of the best investors in Silicon Valley.

JeremyBanks··on LG is getting out of the mobile phone business
Are customers entitled to that but only if they purchase a phone from a failing company? I've had Samsung drop support for one of my phones after ~no time, but they're doing fine.
JeremyBanks··on Ask HN: OCR Libraries for Receipt Scanning/Parsing?
Since/until when was Wave using Mechanical Turk? That sounds like a reasonable thing to do, but they weren't using it when I worked there last year.
JeremyBanks··on Most loved programming language Rust sparks privacy concerns
Rust is working toward fully reproducible builds; you can see outstanding issues here: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/labels/A-reproducibility . The compiler already has options to enable many sources of variability. I've had success with reproducible builds for WASM.
JeremyBanks··on GitHub investigating crypto-mining campaign abusing its server infrastructure
Illegal is the appropriate word when you're looking at something that's draining resources (electrical and human) in every major country and providing nothing of value in return. (I've made some nice money from crypto speculating, but that's not making the world better, that's just taking advantage of bigger fools.)

Proof of work systems, which by design compete on wasting resources, need to internationally outlawed.

If people want cryptocurrencies to keep going, they can get a move on finally fucking migrating to these alternatives systems they tell us are just around the corner. If none of the major networks are able to do so, they shouldn't exist.

JeremyBanks··on Show HN: I built Creodocs, a document creation platform based on LaTeX
The only place I remember seeing this model before was predatory telecom companies. Not a good association.

Product does look nifty, though.

JeremyBanks··on Nil in Go is typed in theory and sort of untyped in practice
C is an ~untyped language so this comparison isn't very helpful.
JeremyBanks··on Show HN: Poulette – A Color Palette GUI
This is one of my favourite things I've seen here in a long time. This is a very creative approach to a UI component that hasn't changed much in decades. I love it!
JeremyBanks··on Amazon security staff reported its own tweets as “suspicious,” fearing hack
This is a bad take.
JeremyBanks··on Proof-of-work should be banned
"How dare they put their money where their mouth is?!"

"How dare they invest in what they think is a less harmful alternative?!"

"How dare they question our ponzi scheme!?"

JeremyBanks··on Bitcoin is not a Battery – it is a Sink
Sure, but that becomes problematic when your proof-of-work security level depends on that. It's inherently fucked.
JeremyBanks··on Why are fewer men in their 20s having sex?
That graph seems like an accurate reflection of how much effort people of each gender put into their appearance.
JeremyBanks··on The ecosystem of the Go programming language
Go: we have so few keywords! Simple language!

Also Go: because we shoved them all into comments instead!

This seems like an extremely weird choice.

JeremyBanks··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
it's okay because only one in one thousand people have died
JeremyBanks··on GitHub, fuck your name change
Why is this empty vapid rant so upvoted? Who cares?

Writing so many words about this change that doesn't really affect anyone unless they want it to... I wonder why he was so upset?

(I don't actually wonder. Enjoy your lovely community of wonderful like-minded wholesome people, Dang.)

JeremyBanks··on Improving large monorepo performance on GitHub
They're just expressing curiosity. Jeeze.
