JensRantil··on How the append-only btree works (2010)
IIRC, this is how CouchDB was implemented. The benefit is that it was resilient to crash without needing a write-ahead log. The downside was that it required running background compaction of the B+tree regularly.
JensRantil··on Advice for new software devs who've read all those other advice essays
I used to keep a list like this on Quora: https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-best-secrets-of-great-pro... I used to update it a few times per year. Haven't done that recently. Maybe useful for someone else don't know.
JensRantil··on My simplicity toolkit: Programming (part 2)
Nice catch! Fixed!
JensRantil··on Ghost boat with GPS leads father-son duo to man overboard
Not sure it's a very ethical to do marketing based on someone's close-encounter.
JensRantil··on Linear-log bucketing: fast, versatile, simple (2015)
Sounds very similar to how memcached allocates slabs.
JensRantil··on Don't Use Stripe
I think https://www.bits.bi also will offer this.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
Depending on the nature of access patterns you might be able to automatically block the IPs by tuning the parameters on fail2ban (if you have a server) to block the proxy IPs.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: Have you ever heard of users demonstrating against software?
If I recall correctly, the book "The Toyota model" there was a quote saying "Toyota is not an IT company, we are a car maker" - this was the reason why they rejected using IT systems for many many years, simply focusing on physical kanban boards in the factory etc. etc.
JensRantil··on JEP 431: Sequenced Collections
Good point. We should use it mush much more sparingly then. ;)
JensRantil··on JEP 431: Sequenced Collections
On a larger scale, I think Java's support for inheritance of interfaces was a mistake from the start.
JensRantil··on JEP 431: Sequenced Collections
I find it hilarious that, after all these years, Java is still not adhering to the Interface Segregation principle - working with _small_ interfaces should be a thing. Having SequencedCollection inherit Collection goes against that.
JensRantil··on Bring your own key was a lie
Same argument can be used for encrypted EBS devices. I see some of these solutions as a way to be able to add a checkmark in some compliance report somewhere - they don't necessarily add a lot of actual security.
JensRantil··on Cassandra at Apple: 1000s of Clusters, 300k Nodes, 100 PB
More like 99,9% of use cases. But yeah.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
A friend of mine posted his one-developer tech startup details here: https://medium.com/dreamwod-tech/how-i-built-my-tech-startup...
JensRantil··on The Remote Pop-In (2021)
Yeah, I think it's a security feature not get run over by a car when talking - but I agree it would be nice to be able to turn off.
JensRantil··on The Remote Pop-In (2021)
My former tram used to have a Google Meet URL which we tried to reuse in our meetings. We announced the URL in our Slack channel as a bookmark and in the description.

Particularly, we had our morning standup using the URL and when we stayed around working together on something. Other people in the company would just be able to pop in and talk to use. It was super nice!

I did see two issues with this, though:

- Bluetooth headphones have worse audio when mic is on.

- I felt it used some cognitive overhead being in a video call.

JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
While I'm venting K8s frustration; They told me K8s was awesome because it allows me to easy test things locally on my machine. They told me minikube would solve it. Minikube ran out of memory, was unstable, crashed. Production YAML required certmanager not on my machine. Production YAML required volume manager not on my machine.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
Agree! That said, it's important to remember that someone needs to maintain those manifests, too. Copy-paste might work initially, but you will need to modify them at some point. Which means you need in-house knowledge of that K8s YAML, anyway. For a smaller shop this might be non-trivial. For a larger shop you likely have something close to a Platform team that can maintain the manifests to make them easy to use.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
Yeah, been there and it makes things one notch even worse. :)
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is your Kubernetes nightmare?
Honestly, creating my first K8s deployment of a service; typing out at least 150 lines of YAML to define my Deployment, figuring out how my ConfigMaps, Secrets, and Volumes, Services are defined and connected together. Vanilla K8s YAML is extremely low-level.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: In these uncertain times, how do you handle anxiousness
It sounds like you have a lot of empathy, but could improve on your compassion. There is willingness to act in compassion. What is a small thing that you could do to improve the world for others and yourself?

Loving-kindness or Thonglen meditation might help.

JensRantil··on Filing taxes could be free & simple. H&R Block & Intuit lobby against it (2017)
Sweden here again. Most of our stock brokers submit our taxes from trades to our tax authority. If you're doing basic buying and selling, it's all prefilled in tax form every year.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
CS: Design Patterns by GoF. It truly made me understand object oriented design. I'd claim at least 95% of programmers in our industry programming in an object oriented language don't know object oriented design.

Math: - The Code Book by Simon Singh. - Chaos by James Gleick.

JensRantil··on Ask HN: What kind of online tools are you using, missing or can be improved?
python3 -m json.tool some.json
JensRantil··on Ask HN: How do you cope with being interupted?
I do this, too, but I tend to write a comment in the code where I'm at with what the next step is. Works great.
JensRantil··on Show HN: A CLI utility automagically converting Unix timestamps
Yep, difference is that unfy automatically discovers all UNIX timestamps in any stdin stream and makes them readable to stdout, not just converting a single timestamp.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
I practice secular spiritualism[1] through Buddhist-inspired meditation[2].

JensRantil··on Ask HN: How do you manage direct updates to databases in a production system
The best migration is no-migration. That is not having to move data at all. This becomes increasingly more important with larger datasets. One way of doing that is to simply serialize data in something like Protobuf and have a generic schema that rarely/never needs to be altered[1]. Adding a new field to the Protobuf is a no-op.

JensRantil··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Old-school microwave ovens; one knob for effect, one knob for timer (which implicitly starts the microwave), and one button the open the door (which implicitly stops the microwave).

Today's modern microwaves ovens have _horrible_ UX. I talked to someone a few years ago who'd worked at an oven manufacturer and told me that UX people aren't involved in designing these ovens anymore; the process is entirely driven by marketing departments requiring more buttons, weird sliders, digital UIs and other ridiculous features - all to increase sales and convince people they need a new microwave when 99% of people really don't.

JensRantil··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Same in Sweden.
