JensRantil··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Making a POC of a railway scheduling system.
JensRantil··on The Dangers of an IDE
If everyone else are coding in an IDE and the coupling naturally follows, you also need to use an IDE to survive in that code base.
JensRantil··on Mako: Fast, production-grade web bundler
Then they should write "focuses on fast, modern, and correct", not "written in Rust". There are plenty of strategies (such as programming languages) that lead to those outcomes.
JensRantil··on Mako: Fast, production-grade web bundler
I find all these "based on Rust" and "written in Rust" announcements ridiculous. Which programming language is entirely irrelevant to an end-user.
JensRantil··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
I don't understand your question.
JensRantil··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
> Short of a financial crisis I don’t really see what slows this trend.

Vote left and increase taxes for the rich?

JensRantil··on Find the oldest line in your repo
Good point. I fixed your null comment in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42885601.
JensRantil··on Find the oldest line in your repo
Whoops, it extracted the newest row :) Correction:

    git ls-files -z|xargs -0 -n 1 git blame --date=format:%Y%m%d -f |grep -Eo '\d{8}.*' |sort -n | head -n 1 | sed 's/^[^)]*)*[ \t]//'
This also use a null delimiter for the files and fixes a small sed pattern bug.
JensRantil··on Find the oldest line in your repo
Thanks. Fixed.
JensRantil··on Find the oldest line in your repo
Not sure why all the lines of code. This is much shorter:

    git ls-files|xargs -n 1 git blame --date=format:%Y%m%d -f |grep -Eo '\d{8}.*' |sort -r | head -n 1 | sed 's/^[^)]*) \t//'
(on MacOSX)

facepalm
JensRantil··on Ask HN: Are there "story-based" and "fact-based" people?
This sounds like Jung's model which talks about "sensation function" vs "intuition function".
JensRantil··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
LOL.
JensRantil··on GitHub introduces sub-issues, issue types and advanced search
Jens's law: Every ticketing system will eventually become Jira.

This is also what is happening with GH issues.

JensRantil··on Lines of code that will beat A/B testing every time (2012)
Yep. I implemented this as a Java library a while ago (and other stuff): https://github.com/JensRantil/java-canary-tools Basically, I think feature flags and A/B tests aren't always needed to roll out experiments.
JensRantil··on Developing Developers (2015)
Agree. I actually decided to blog about that here earlier today: https://jensrantil.github.io/posts/pair-mob-sessions/
JensRantil··on Modelica
Whoa! I did my Master's Thesis about Modelica and Optimica (an optimization extension). Happy to see it still exist and thrive!
JensRantil··on ElasticSearch and many other repos are gone
...or they mistakenly droppen them. :)
JensRantil··on Fair: A Go library for serving resources fairly
I coded up something like Fair a couple 1-2 years ago: https://github.com/JensRantil/conc It's alpha software, but maybe interesting to someone don't know.
JensRantil··on Fair: A Go library for serving resources fairly
The world is full of trade-offs. I don't think the author intended to solve CPU-bound workloads like that. Or have they claimed that?
JensRantil··on K1 Buys MariaDB
Yeah, "My" is actually pronounced wrong by 99% of all MySQL users.
JensRantil··on Danish government will shut down encrypted messaging (including via blocking)
This is an incorrect translation. The word "vil" in Danish translates to "want", not "will".
JensRantil··on Show HN: Non SaaS – Directory of Non SaaS Apps
Works badly on mobile.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
oasisaimlessly's response says it all.
JensRantil··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
The first few years at a previous startup I worked on. Java. CI/CD in place when merging PRs. But mostly, the thing that made the code base great was the fact that the code wrapped external libraries in small interfaces that were _owned by the company_, and dependency was used to not depend on implementation interfaces. In short, adhering to the basics on the SOLID principles.
JensRantil··on Aider: AI pair programming in your terminal
That will not necessarily make aider write better commit messages (unless I possibly tell it explicitly why I am doing something in every instruction).
JensRantil··on Aider: AI pair programming in your terminal
It gets commit messages wrong. Commit messages should signal intent, not what the patch does. "changing an enum" is a horrible commit message.
JensRantil··on Double-entry bookkeeping as a directed graph
I work in the Carbon Accounting space where the accounting is used for carbon emissions.
JensRantil··on You cannot simply publicly access private secure links, can you?
I'm surprised no one has mentioned creating a standard that allows a these sites to check whether it's a private link or not.

For example, either a special HTTP header returned when making a HEAD request for the URL, or downloading a file similar to robots.txt that defines globs which are public/private.

At least this would (mostly) avoid these links becoming publicly available on the internetz.

JensRantil··on The One Billion Row Challenge in Go: from 1m45s to 4s in nine solutions
Second article I'm reading on implementing this in Go. Since the temperatures are in the range [-99.9, 99.9] with a tenth of precision (~2k values), I am surprised why no one has implemented a parsing of the numbers using a prepopulated lookup table. Should probably speed things up.

I submitted a github issue on this for the other implementation I looked at here[1].
