Jasber··on Stanford Online: High Performance Web Sites [video]
Fixed. Posted in a hurry + cannot spell = embarrassing mistake :)
Jasber··on Capo: My new Mac app for helping musicians learn their music
This is great.

How difficult would it be to detect the notes that are being played by the bass? This would be useful for someone who is new to playing by ear and soloing.

For example, you pickup that the bass progression is G A D C--that makes figuring out the correct chords (and notes for soloing) even easier.

Jasber··on Poll: Where are you from?
Keeping the midwest startup scene alive in Quad Cities, Iowa.
Jasber··on IPhone 3.0 has copy/paste, subscriptions, micropayments, P2P, maps, push, MMS, etc
This was my initial response as well, and I agree it could be abused by developers.

But I still think there's value in a free app that has paid upgrades, even if Apple has to classify them as "Mixed" instead of Free or Paid.

Jasber··on IPhone 3.0 has copy/paste, subscriptions, micropayments, P2P, maps, push, MMS, etc
I was surprised to see in-app sales were only for paid apps. I imagine a big market where apps "hook" a user by being free, then make money from in-app sales.
Jasber··on Find the lowest airfare (and have fun doing it) [Tripeedo - YC 08]
Sites like Tripeedo are not geared towards loyal customers-they're geared towards bargain shoppers.

OTA is gaining real traction. By my count about 1/3rd of the companies listed on Tripeedo are members of OTA, while many more unofficially support some derivative of it. Most of these companies don't have open API's--they are very private and require NDA's and partnership agreements.

There are systems in place to handle use-cases like this. API's are in place for travel agents to search available rates and creating bookings. This is essentially the same concept.

Kayak is justifiably being blocked because they're scraping sites. If they had partnership agreements in place this wouldn't happen.

Jasber··on Find the lowest airfare (and have fun doing it) [Tripeedo - YC 08]
What about Open Travel (http://www.opentravel.org/)? Its a format being supported by some of the major players in the travel industry: http://www.opentravel.org/Join/Members.aspx

I am working in a startup that aggregates rental car rates, similar to Tripeedo using OpenTravel. Its all XML based, and can be a PITA--but the result are a better product and a better user experience.

Jasber··on Yahoo BOSS API is no longer free
Yahoo! should have announced this as the plan from the start. Its awful hard to give something away for free, then go back to charging for it. At the very least, they should have grandfathered everyone in who was already using BOSS.

I understand the desire to charge for a service like this, but the way Yahoo! handled this does not encourage me to use their services (I've used BOSS extensively).

Jasber··on Google account not letting me log out.
This should be on a site like Stackoverflow. That being said, the same thing happened to me. The problem was the GMail offline plugin for Google Gears. Delete it from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and restart Safari.
Jasber··on The Elephant in the Room: Google Monoculture
301 redirects are the suggested method for permanently redirecting pages for search engines.

This will preserve pagerank, but not immediately. This means for a while (1 week-3 months), many of your pages will be dropped from their current rankings.

They will be returned, eventually. But Google has to update their entire index before you'll start to see any improvements.

Jasber··on Ask HN: Please provide feedback on our soon-to-launch dating site and widget
I disagree. Hot or Not was a huge success, but not in the dating market. They launched a dating extension to the website that never really took off (http://meetme.hotornot.com/).

Look at their stats: http://siteanalytics.compete.com/hotornot.com/?metric=uv

People used HotorNot for fun, not for finding real dates. I suspect the case will be the same here.

Jasber··on Ask HN: Please provide feedback on our soon-to-launch dating site and widget
Matching people based on looks alone is pretty superficial. I think you're going to have a tough time getting people to adopt this model.

One cool way you could spin this idea is by letting people play match maker. Imagine a Facebook application where a person could set-up two of their friends on a blind date. I think something like this could spread fairly quickly; not to mention people are more willing to accept a friends suggestion rather than a complete strangers.

Jasber··on My startup makes jellyfish aquariums
Put your own tanks on the front page. Make your own videos with jellyfish in them, and use those. The videos you offer don't tell me anything about your product.

You also need more content. I want more from your Website than it offers. I'm genuinely interested in your product but can't find enough information about it on your site.

Consider adding a FAQ to cover basic questions.

Jasber··on Tables vs CSS: CSS Trolls begone
I'm not sure pure CSS designs offer much in terms of usability and accessibility directly. It does help mobile devices, but I think that's still too small for many sites to matter. Plus with more devices that have full browsers, this will become less important.

But another side-effect of many CSS purists is also being an HTML purist. This leads to good semantic practices all-around.

Things like properly annotating title/alt properties. Or attaching checkbox fields to labels. Making sure the tabindex is in an order that makes sense.

As you said, with practice, everyone learns the benefits of each style and develops their own personal medium.

Jasber··on Tables vs CSS: CSS Trolls begone
The people preaching 100% CSS design are purist, they're people that love design and love CSS. These are the Eric Meyers, Doug Bowman and David Shea's of the world.

The way you see beauty in "perfect" code, they see in pure designs.

But there are benefits to their methods. Usability, accessibility, SEO, increased caching and reduced page load times are all side-effects of "pure" CSS designs.

I'd suggest taking the 80/20 approach to CSS. Take the best of what works and then just get it done and move on.

Also, my time limit for CSS problems is 1 hour. After that I use the best solution instead of the perfect one.

Jasber··on Vim commands every programmer should know
I'm at a plateau in my learning curve with Vim; I grasp all the basic concepts but find it difficult to fit more advanced commands into daily usage.

Lately I have a Vim cheat sheet next to me (PDF: http://www.digilife.be/quickreferences/QRC/VIM%20Quick%20Ref...), regularly dig through :help and idle in #vim on Freenode.

But I still find it to be a steep learning curve even after I think I understand Vim.

Any other suggestions on what to do to keep the learning process going?

Edit: Also, looking through other .vimrc files is extremely helpful - http://dotfiles.org/.vimrc

Jasber··on DuckDuckGo is top result for "new search engine"
WordTracker has a great free too: http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/

Also SEOBook has a decent tool: http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/

But yes, AdWords tools is among the best to find search volume. No one else has the data to offer the same information.

Jasber··on New users: Welcome. Please read the site guidelines.
What about putting a cap on the number of users that can register per day? This keeps the community growing but in a controlled fashion.
Jasber··on Gary Vaynerchuk is ambitious
Gary has always been a little over the top for me, but it works for him and comes off naturally. He deserves all of the fame he gets because he works his ass off. He claims to answer every e-mail. Based on how quickly he's built a following I wouldn't doubt it.

If you haven't already, watch his first appearance on Conan: http://www.viddler.com/explore/djsteen/videos/69/

Jasber··on Ask HN: Review my website - HotNameList.com
Nice concept and good implementation. My only suggestion is get rid of the ads. Paid lists will be a huge revenue generator, no need to scare people off with ads.

I'd suggest checking out Google Hot Trends (http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends) and finding available domain names against that.

I had a site like this years ago and it did quite well. Looks like you found the right business model as well, domain squatters pay big money for these lists.

The only reason I stopped doing it was because I felt uneasy contributing to the domain name squatting problem.

Jasber··on Ask HN : Where do you work (if freelance) ?
I'm in the same situation. When I need a break I head to the local coffee shop. If that's too loud I'll head to school or the library. Changing scenery often helps keep the juices flowing.

I find even moving around the apartment helps. I have a movable desk, so I've been experimenting with working in different locations throughout the day.

Jasber··on Is Craigslist rotting on the vine?
The double edged sword of Craigslist is that they accept nearly everything. They're good enough for most people, which is why they'll continue to dominate.

However there are many vertical niches within classifieds that can still compete with Craigslist. Apartments, Houses, Cars, Crafts and Jobs have all split out into separate niches and seem to be doing well. There are still tons of smaller markets virtually untapped (Pets come to mind).

Jasber··on Ask HN : What killed ICQ?
I thought the numbers were one of the things that made it fun. Having a low ICQ number showed you were an early adopter, much like having a short URL or twitter name.
Jasber··on Ask HN: Review my startup txtful - get stuff done on the web by sending a text
Thanks guys. I must have missed that. After I couldn't get SMS working I headed to the FAQ where it said you were still working on it.

I think I just need to read a little more carefully :).

Jasber··on Web Hosting’s Dirty Laundry
I'm actually launching a hosting review site right now (tonight) so it's interesting this came up. I've found this is very much the case across all hosting review sites.

I decided to shift focus towards working with hosts (any host) that want to be included in the directory, whether they had an affiliate program or not.

Of course if a host happens to have an affiliate program, I see no reason to not use it as long as your transparent with your users.

Plus it keeps the site free of regular banner advertising.

Jasber··on Ask HN: Review my startup txtful - get stuff done on the web by sending a text
Awesome idea. Two criticisms, however:

You should get a privacy policy up asap. You're collecting and storing a lot of private information, so you should have a policy that dictates your stance.

Also, not having SMS support yet is a deal-breaker. I realize you're working on this but without this I can't use your system. As someone that doesn't have a smart phone I was excited to try your service but when I realize it was e-mail only, immediately lost interest.

Good luck with everything, and send and update to members when you have SMS support.

Jasber··on Will Someone Please Invent iTunes for News?
By bloated I mean local newspapers covering national news. When small papers have newsrooms with 60 reporters, and 40% of those reporters cover national news--that's a problem.

To see evidence of this go look at your local paper. Mine writes about (not syndicates...writes) national news all of the time.

Small to medium sized papers shouldn't be doing this anymore. They should be focusing on their local communities and dominating that market.

By bloat I mean purchasing multi-million dollar printing presses in 2005 (http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-108017775.html) when you should be investing heavily in your local and online markets.

Jasber··on Will Someone Please Invent iTunes for News?
“The notion that the enormous cost of real news-gathering might be supported by the ad load of display advertising down the side of the page, or by the revenue share from having a Google search box in the corner of the page, or even by a 15-second teaser from Geico prior to a news clip, is idiotic on its face.”

The notion that newspapers are still spending money on multi-million dollar presses and bloated newsrooms is what's really idiotic.

Jasber··on Ask HN: Review our webapp (Sproost); team met on HN
I thought it was confusing how the quiz controls changed after I answered the first question.

You should make that consistent.

Otherwise nice work.
