JaggerFoo··on Show HN: With a 9-5 job and 2 kids I have finally finished my first MVP
Congrats. What an awesome accomplishment as a single mother.

Inspiring.

JaggerFoo··on An old hacker's tips on staying employed
The article is on keeping a job. The "Make Your Boss Afraid" section of the article reminds me of the book "Linchpin" by Seth Godin.
JaggerFoo··on How to Hack APIs in 2021
Excellent article - it kept my interest to the end. I bookmarked and google several references in the article.

Now I need to see an article on modern API development methods, including trusted frameworks.

Cheers

JaggerFoo··on The Push for a “PBS for the Internet”
So boring content that everyone says they like, but never consume, with constant requests for donations.

So what would be the purpose? Current trusted platforms are ignored and news outlets that report on ignorant humans with wacko theories defying reality are thriving. One or more additional trusted platform will not make a difference.

JaggerFoo··on Harvey’s Casino Bomb
$3 Million vs cost to repair/rebuild casino with a five story crater - which was the better choice economically?

They would've caught the guy eventually, so they may have been able to recover some of the ransom.

JaggerFoo··on The SaaS Org Chart
I would of liked to see series X funding ranges and period ranges along with the charts to make more sense of the org charts.
JaggerFoo··on Experts Weigh in on Pentagon UFO Report
If these UFO's are travelling at super speeds and making sudden direction changes, why do we never see any effects on the atmosphere surrounding the object?
JaggerFoo··on Solana Labs completes a $314M private token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz
Nice. Thanks for this. I really appreciate being enlightened on this topic.

JaggerFoo··on Solana Labs completes a $314M private token sale led by Andreessen Horowitz
The lead VC and others are US based, or have operations in the US.

Were they able to segment investments, so that only non-US investor money flowed into the sale? Does having US-based VC organizations participate create a nexus for the SEC to have authority?

It will be interesting to follow the legalities of this, so perhaps others can model the sale and use to successfully float new tokens without scrutiny by the SEC.

Or does the "Duck Rule" not apply to this sale? What say you Gary Gensler?

JaggerFoo··on Microsoft support page says Windows 10 “retirement date” is 2025
I run into this a bit - it can be a problem or not depending. I use a Linux laptop for development, and even have a Windows XP virtualbox for a workflow program that I can't get to run on newer Windows OSs - it's needed for legacy apps.

Using Windows 7 on a PC I can only use a version 3 series version of GnuCash, not the latest version 4 release, which is available to Windows 10, but my Linux distro (OpenSuse) only has the version 3 series of GnuCash. So I can gpg the GnuCash xml file and share the accounting file across my machines using github.

JaggerFoo··on Microsoft support page says Windows 10 “retirement date” is 2025
Good thing I'm using Windows 7 Pro.

JaggerFoo··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
I said "screw it" after my Oracle Cloud "always free" account was terminated with no recourse, a few days after having activity on the database building an application prototype, well under the resource limits. I'm now running a libvirt VM on my laptop to develop the prototype.

Others have complained about Oracle Cloud's draconian practices. Doesn't sound like a company that wants to build a cloud business.

JaggerFoo··on Google will stop using Oracle’s finance software and adopt SAP instead
I could make any adjustment I want to posted GL transactions using SQL and knowledge of the chart of accounts and subledgers. No one would know unless it is a transaction picked for audit. This is true at least for Oracle ERP - there is no database row-level security for posted GL transactions.

So auditors belief that an Oracle ERP system gives them confidence in a company audit is misguided.

JaggerFoo··on Cryptocurreny crime is way ahead of regulators and law enforcement
You should view the Cryptocurrency lecture at MIT, which was given by Gary Gensler, who will be the new leader of the SEC. There are references and readings for both sides and good discussions.

Very good overview of cryptocurrencies, even some students have created cryptocurrencies.

JaggerFoo··on Fakery and the Russian Avant-Garde
They may attempt to fake the art of Kazimir Malevich because of it's value, but he was much more than his art.

His was a movement, a belief, ideas that promoted great works, terminology, a school and even an opera. All of this under a government where such ideas and art were not embraced, or made illegal.

I recall when I saw an exhibit of his work at the Tate Modern, how floored I was by all of this - such greatness and ambition, from an artist I had no knowledge of before.

His legacy cannot be faked, or will time and fakery-for-profit lead those in the future to question even his existence? Hopefully never.

I once tried to find the grave of Kazimir Malevich using the internet, for surely his greatness would be celebrated and marked. I think it is lost and perhaps under residential buildings or near a tree somewhere. Do the people that pay $86 million for his paintings consider this?

JaggerFoo··on How we use HashiCorp Nomad
Thanks for sharing this excellent article.
JaggerFoo··on IKEA Frekvens LED box hack
I would love to see this installed above a doorbell.

Blank until someone approaches, then the "Eye" appears with no sound, and follows the persons movement at the door.

Super creepy.

JaggerFoo··on Show HN: I made a CRM system to make sales fun
No API information.

This is what I look for first when evaluating CRM software, which gives me an idea of the underlying schema and how to extend or integrate the software.

Most smaller CRM's do not support multiple price books, for example, that can be critical to businesses that have price differences between sales channels and regions.

A typical use case, customer story, for your solution would be helpful.

JaggerFoo··on Two potentially life-friendly planets found orbiting a nearby star
You got me. I'm from one of those planets.

A group of us decided to move to earth for the warmer weather. It's also why most of us live in California and Florida.

Tan Mom is our leader.

JaggerFoo··on We Can Do Better Than SQL
Good luck with that.
JaggerFoo··on Nasdaq Acquires Quandl to Advance the Use of Alternative Data
I agree, CUSIP is also a problem for the privateer (meaning all data needs to be free to use). While I have found a way to find a mapping online, I have no idea of the accuracy and have to trust that the unaware provider QA's the data.
JaggerFoo··on Street View of 1980s New York
Or you can watch old episodes of Kojak for a late 70's perspective.

But a nice undertaking.

JaggerFoo··on SiriusXM buys Pandora for $3.5 billion
It took me only 10 minutes to cancel a SiriusXM account I had for over 5 years.

The webapp was unusable and Howard Stern is now boring to me.

I went with a Pandora-ish/Spotify-ish service named Slacker Radio, which costs only $2.50/mo pro-rated, has a 320k bit-rate and is commercial free.

SiriusXM may need Pandora to survive in the future. Pandora/SiriusXM can be re-worked to compete with Spotify.

JaggerFoo··on Life in the Spanish city that banned cars
What area of SJC are you talking about?

I go there quite often and would like to see this for myself. Especially the area where no cars are allowed.

JaggerFoo··on On the Road to Pure Go X11 GUIs
Though I do not dare enter the realm you describe, I applaud your quest for a go-based X11 ecosystem and hope you find considerable help from the go community to at least accelerate your vision/model to a proof-of-concept.

You may get the usual off-handed opinions when golang is involved - "Rust ...", "Yeah but Go doesn't ...", etc.

I do wish you had a timestamp of your article for reference in the future.

JaggerFoo··on Show HN: Eno – A lightning fast, user-friendly YAML/TOML alternative
How does it handle Oblique Strategies?
JaggerFoo··on Energy Saved, Sleep Lost: The Unintended Consequences of LED Lighting
Try living in Sweden, where people have been dealing with sleep and light for a very very long time.

LED lighting is a pussy compared to the Sun

JaggerFoo··on Launch HN: Dinesafe (YC S18) – Crowdsourcing Food Poisoning Reports
Just because someone gets ill after eating at a restaurant doesn't mean that the restaurant food was the cause. There may be several causes including food the sickee prepared for himself/herself earlier in the day.

What confidence indicators are you presenting to the public so that a report can be flagged as possibly unreliable?

JaggerFoo··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
Good point - revenue rules.

By the way, golf and baseball help me take naps.

Cheers

JaggerFoo··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
I recently started using Twitch for poker streaming channels, but I also like to watch the video game play, since I don't have to go through any learning/skill curve to play any game myself - I can sit and watch play, and be entertained (team battles) or depressed (Assassin's Creed) with what players are doing with their time.

I'm definitely out of the target demographic for Twitch, but I consider it an additional entertainment channel when I'm bored of content in traditional media such as Youtube TV and Netflix.

Cheers
