JaDogg··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
nice thank you :)
JaDogg··on Ripgrep is faster than grep, ag, Git grep, ucg, pt, sift (2016)
I'm not allowed to install arbitrary software, only those that are provided by IT. It is just company policy and I cannot change that.
JaDogg··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
Cannot join without an invite and I do not know anyone there.
JaDogg··on For processing strings, streams in C++ can be slow
Yeah I agree. Can the same be said for functional programming (closures, high order functions, etc)? (not procedural)
JaDogg··on Ripgrep is faster than grep, ag, Git grep, ucg, pt, sift (2016)
Hello thank you for pointing this out. I hate how slow grep is in Windows :( and I cannot install rg (I have no choice in the OS at work)
JaDogg··on The Bond villain compliance strategy
How, post scarcity (star-trek like) world does not need currency or finance at all.
JaDogg··on The Bond villain compliance strategy
Disagree, I am talking about whole set of cryptocurrencies. see here: https://coinmarketcap.com/all/views/all/.
JaDogg··on The Bond villain compliance strategy
Indeed.
JaDogg··on The Bond villain compliance strategy
We should strive to eliminate finance, not to go back to the past when each lord had their own currency. Cryptocurrency is hindering human progress.
JaDogg··on Maryland will hand out 133k Chromebooks to the public
First: helping businesses does not avoid corruption and nepotism. - sure. However there is a higher probability of that if gov create jobs. (I have seen Sri Lankan gov create jobs just to pay salaries for friends/etc). Incubator is going to be better than that as even if gov pick someone they like, still the market decide the outcome and someone else can take place)
JaDogg··on Maryland will hand out 133k Chromebooks to the public
More transparency isn't it.. (put all documents / budgets /etc in an easy to access / easy to understand and read public website, and please hire a UI/UX person to actually do the frontend)
JaDogg··on AI system self-organises to develop features of brains of complex organisms
Hmm I think for AGI, we might need some artifically generated biological neurons / brain matter. Combined with cybernetics. but it should be able to reconfigure neurons. either by removing chunks and replacing it with new chunks.. or have some nano machines work on the brain matter

OK I see where this is going...

JaDogg··on Maryland will hand out 133k Chromebooks to the public
Please do not create jobs. Seriously, this is a good way to get people related to politicians in various places that just pay a salary. Now the whole neighborhood is worse off. This will only lead to corruption and nepotism.

Helping businesses with something like an incubator is a good idea, and these businesses can create jobs instead of the government creating jobs.

Hopefully, these Chromebooks will make it easier for people to access knowledge/entertainment, leading to businesses/self-employment/more jobs naturally and sustainably.

JaDogg··on Who Controls OpenAI?
too fat to survice apocalypse
JaDogg··on Setenv Is Not Thread Safe and C Doesn't Want to Fix It
OK thank you for the explanation.. This makes more more scared to bring in libraries :(
JaDogg··on Setenv Is Not Thread Safe and C Doesn't Want to Fix It
who pull in libraries in C like this?
JaDogg··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
good for people who invested in MSFT.. this drama might not negatively affect it.
JaDogg··on Cats are no match for New York City's rats (2018)
Yes and rats eat kittens.
JaDogg··on Persuasion through status rather than argument
Indeed. However, I believe that we, as humans, have always been indifferent to those outside our immediate circle. Similarly, people often don't show concern for the homeless or those in inescapable servitude due to mortgages. Yet, there is a desire to increase the number of people in office, rather than converting more spaces into houses or apartments. I have observed on Hacker News that some individuals don't even rent places; instead, they keep those spaces closed to inflate prices. Despite the significant progress we've made from tribal times, our emotional evolution seems limited.

Ever since COVID, I have been wearing masks, mostly when using public transport. Instead of five days a week, I now use public transport a lot less, a maximum of two days. Two advantages from this combination that I see are that I have not caught seasonal flu, as I used to every year pre-COVID, and extra conscious handwashing also probably helps. Additionally, I appreciate the fact that my whole face is not visible unless I want it to be, which helps me with social anxiety, and people tend to ignore me more.
JaDogg··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
Some devices feature USB-C ports that do not conform to the specifications. They're essentially just a DC barrel port disguised in USB-C clothing. and various other combinations exist as well with partial features.
JaDogg··on More advertisers halt spending on X in growing backlash against Musk
Haha, the US is leaning towards the right wing, and Elon probably has an advantage in doing what he did. Similarly, he mentioned that AI needs to stop, but then proceeded with AI projects. He says what grabs attention to divert from what he truly wants to do.
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
That seems useful. Thank you.
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
Thanks. Here is my conclusion

- Majority of people find it useful at the price point. (only 2 disagree it seems from all the comments here)

- Instead of using chatgpt, directly using OpenAI API might make more financial sense and I might need to write a wrapper on top of their APIs (or use one that is already there)

- Limits are 50 or 40 per 3 hours. API to test that - https://chat.openai.com/public-api/conversation_limit (1 person say they have not hit the limit and there seem to be no limit, I cannot test that unfortunately)

- There is a waitlist for ChatGPT+ So I cannot pay even if I want to. :(

- Almost everyone agree GPT-4 is a lot better. (High school vs Degree level as someone has pointed out)

- There seem to be a cost dashboard with ability to set limits for API.

JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
perhaps that is why we have a waitlist to purchase it now.

what does this say to you? https://chat.openai.com/public-api/conversation_limit

JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
haha yeah
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
Yes you are correct. I have updated original question thank you.
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
How easy it is to cancel? can you get for 1 month then cancel and get another month later?
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
I see. this make sense to me. But I wanted to try to see if it is sufficient... but there is a waitlist for paid now. (Perhaps recent drama has something to do with that)
JaDogg··on Ask HN: Is paid ChatGPT Plus worth it?
Updated.
