JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
This has been my experience for a long time. Swift is nice but why would I waste my time working on a language that is too tied to the Apple platform even if it's open-source when we have more universal scripting languages like Python, or languages like Kotlin that are compiled but have more support (because I trust JetBrains way more than Apple at the moment), or languages that are most strict like Rust but have more momentum and safety?

They painted themselves in a corner. Apple being the best computing platform while trying to please everyone can never be a serious proposition. Either they are the best and everyone uses macOS, or we have to be so careful that any alternative is more interesting that what they propose.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Slightly Better LinkedIn Analytics
Give us an example because I don't understand the purpose of that. I use LinkedIn to get jobs and I don't see the point of having analytics on that toxic site.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Hoppscotch: Open source alternative to Postman / Insomnia
Open-source is about having the whole stuff, not restrictions on "Embed Bruno into your SDLC with deeper Git integration, automation."

What I do resent is the fact that Bruno was a reaction to shitty restrictions from another application, and they did the same thing a few months/years later.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Sparrow, a modern C++ implementation of the Apache Arrow columnar format
It's a new technique called "reverse GC" where you care about the first living object instead of the last one /s

Also:

> nullable can hold references

We have: https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/utility/functional/referen...

> Assigning nullval [...] does not trigger the destruction of the underlying object

That's weird.

Bruno was supposed to free us from the other bad guy, then they added a subscription too. Fuck Bruno I guess.

I haven't tried it but there is Posting in a TUI: https://github.com/darrenburns/posting
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Traffic spikes are bad for your product
We would know if we had a link. Otherwise it’s fiction and I believe it’s yet another lame web site created by an ideas guy.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Apple iPhone sales dip despite AI rollout
Google enabled Gemini in Gmail at work. It’s annoying, time wasting, and useless. I hid the icon with uBlock Origin but they still push it through other means.

In 50 years, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more stupid rollout than AI across the whole industry. No wonder I hate it.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Ask HN: Programmers who aren't front/back end/web developers, what is your job?
Desktop applications, and sometimes servers unrelated to the web. Actually all the technologies that existed for 40 years before the web.

The fact that I hate JS and think it’s the worst language ever created explains why I’m not doing web stuff on purpose unless I’m ordered to.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on [dead]
A lot of "I am very smart" one-liners here. I don't know the guy (I guess I should) but it's not very insightful.

Even better then. I’m glad they did that.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Illegally acquiring copyrighted material has always been highly illegal in France and I'm sure most other countries. Disney is another example of how it not grey at all.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
> OpenAI's results were hard earned after all

DDOSing web sites and grabbing content without anyone's consent is not hard earned at all. They did spent billions on their thing, but nothing was earned as they could never do that legally.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
> foreign nation-state backed organization

I'm European, are you talking about Microsoft, Google, or OpenAI?

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
I discount this because OpenAI is pumping the whole internet for money, and Zuckerberg torrented LibGen for its AI. We cannot blame the Chinese anymore. They went through the crappy "Made in China" phase in the 80s/90s, but they mastered the art of improving stuff instead of mere cloning, and it makes the big companies angry which is a nice bonus.

IMHO the whole world is becoming crazy for a lot of reasons, and pissing off billionaires makes me laugh.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on AI haters build tarpits to trap and trick AI scrapers that ignore robots.txt
> because they are multi-billion dollar companies, or because they behave poorly

Both for me. They should be spanked for their behavior and lack of respect. I don’t want compensation though because I write open-source applications, but I want them to respect the license (which they don’t obviously).

Also I don’t understand why you feel anybody is withdrawing from the internet. It’s only a tarpit and I’m sure most of those who react don’t have ChatGPT subscriptions.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Show HN: Bagels – TUI expense tracker
Is there an envelope system? I would definitely help write one if that’s not the case. Anyway it’s great, that’s exactly what I needed.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Show HN: Bagels – TUI expense tracker
IMHO there is no controversy. If you write applications in Python, you must have a modern package manager whether it’s uv or hatch or anything else.

I think that uv is the best so far but it doesn’t matter.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
I’ve worked for the smallest startups (2 employees) to the biggest company (100k employees).

Everything can bring you burnout if the management is toxic. It’s independent on the size of the company. I’m now working for a small company that feels like a family even if they don’t say it.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Hedy: Textual programming made easy
It seems good for beginners. Less scary than BASIC, simpler than Python, and they even have a turtle mode. I don’t know who the audience is but I would have enjoyed that as a kid.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on DeepSeek v3 and r1 free unlimited
I’m always disappointed by LLMs but this one is the best. It’s repeating previous answers over and over while ignoring any new prompt. Is that the kind of tool that should make me out of a job? Who created this site?

I'll tell my parents to learn JavaScript or Rust to make sure that there is no bug in the smart contracts they are signing.

> between you and some user across the world? Yes, crypto solves it

Crypto solves a problem that less than 0.1% of the world have. It's not very useful. Local laws and regulations are way more effective for me.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on Render raises $80M in Series C financing
It's not helping me. All I understand is that you provide some stuff for Docker, static web sites, and databases. That's good, but it seems very specific. So specific that, as a former devops, I don't understand why you could be useful to me or why I would need your help.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on The Microsoft 365 Copilot launch was a disaster
It’s funny seeing the Stockholm syndrome in action (or plain old forgetting) with OneDrive being touted as being part of the products, whereas it was the beginning of the mess that is now Office.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on The French winemaker whose wines are illegal in his home country
> would horrify many French wine lovers

That's a lie. I wonder what other lies are in this article. Especially hiding why it is forbidden. Maybe he tried to sell it under the label "French wine" when it's a mix from different countries, who knows.

JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
The images are almost good but still in the uncanny valley. The code is almost good but full of bad practices and hidden bugs and undefined behavior. Since most AI grifters are neither coders nor artists, all they can do is produce more more more capitalism-style.
JTyQZSnP3cQGa8B··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
> you work in a language that is underrepresented in models meaning off the shelf tools don't work well

That's exactly what happens, and why I think the whole hype is a joke. I have tried all the models and tools though, it's always an annoying mess.

> tools can solve nearly every single leet code problem faster than you

That would be useful if I was paid to "leet code" or solve Christmas games. This is not a good rebutal though but it made me smile.

> The kind of work I'd give to a Jr/Mid

Good, but I don't want to know what happens in 20 years when there are no more juniors to feed the AI and work on becoming seniors. I will be retired by then and I'll enjoy writing my own open-source stuff.
