JTenerife··on Be Careful with UUID or GUID as Primary Keys
I don't agree with many points.

1. Store uuids in a uuid field. Why starting the article with such a trivial finding that a text field is not optimal.

2. Use sequential uuids.

3. Several benchmarks have shown that the performace hit is minimal.

4. The only way to communicate with ids is to copy and paste them. Never try to memorize, talk about them or type them.

JTenerife··on How Raygun increased throughput 20x with .NET Core over Node.js
Obviously they did something terribly wrong in the first place and now are showing off being all right. Netty would probably faster. As there're no details at all, I feel free to just guess :-).

I recently found Node much faster then .NET Core for a very specific scenario:

Elasticsearch - Node / ASP.NET Core (Kestrel) - NGINX - Client

where every connection must be TLS. So, Node / ASP.NET Core have to decrypt traffic from Elasticsearch and encrypt to NGINX. For a minimal workload the whole trip took 50 ms with .NET Core and 20 ms with Node. Obviously there's something wrong with the .NET setup - maybe some setting with Kestrel and TLS.

Anyway, that's my anecdote. And I wouldn't dare writing a block post how node is 2,5 times faster than .NET.

JTenerife··on New Surface Pro
Agreed, but how's that different to what the competition is doing?

16GB RAM starts at 2199 $US. That indeed quite off-putting for something that should replace my laptop.

JTenerife··on Nginx 1.13 released with TLS 1.3 support
Informations about HAProxy on multi-core hardware (TLS de- and encryption are CPU bound) are a bit discouraging. You can assign workers to cores, but there's no shared memory and therefore the official docs warn about some inconsistencies that might occur. There doesn't seem to be a consensus wether to use the multi-core feature or not. Also nginx supports http/2.

Regarding the status of the backendservers - I use monitoring with health checks for every backend server anyway.

That are the reasons I chose nginx as reverse proxy recently.

JTenerife··on The SQL layer in CockroachDB
It is. Associations and images create emotions which can't be easily overuled by rational thinking. That's why names like HyperDB still work for most people despite being obviously silly. Look at the marketing industry. I'm posting this to urge the guys behind it to rename it. The name simply create unnecessary friction. (But don't name it UnicornDB either. :-))
JTenerife··on Where will UX Design be in 5 years?
Unfortunately probably true. Alexa: "Tomorrow is your wedding anniversary. Do you want me to sent your wife a present?"

Did I just write "unfortunately"? :-)

JTenerife··on Germany Tries to Catch Up with Startup World
How come Bavaria has the highest GPD per captiva (without counting Hamburg and Bremen which are basically cities, not regions) and the second highest total GPD in Germany [1]?

Your experiences are unfortunate and annoying - no doubt. But even if it might be more likely to happen in one region than another this could happen in other regions as well. In the end it's anecdotical stereotyping.

JTenerife··on The Reality of Developer Burnout
I've had several periods in my career where I "felt" like I just couldn't get things done. Some weeks ago, I faced panic attacks and anxiety for the first time of my life due to unmanageable workload combine with nastiest politics going on a my workplace.

This actually changed it for me. I still feel fear that I'm broken permanently.

So, yes, another anecdote. Everyone just needs to really take care by managing themselfes. Working fixed hours only instead of trying to get features by the end of the day / week has done did it for me.

JTenerife··on Lessons learned as a React contractor
Here are my 2 cents:

1. Don't use a boilerplate. Not even create-react-app. Learn webpack and npm and TS / Babel. It's not that hard.

2. If you havn't yet, take a second look at MobX. I got it once I realized that I can organize my state just as I love it with Redux (normalized and update strictly through actions). With MobX you don't need Reselect.

3. Even though the React community seems to favor ES6, at least give Typescript a serious try.

JTenerife··on Secure your MongoDB, Redis, etc
Do you have any thoughts / experience compared to spiped or ipsec? The author or Redis likes spiped: https://redis.io/topics/encryption
JTenerife··on 15 years trying to make everyone separate HTML, JavaScript, CSS – and then
The images of the 2000 line long JS and CSS monoliths didn't fit into a tweet. :-)

Seperation should be by the responsibilities a component, not by language. So the trend to components in frontend dev is right despite some unfamiliar mangling of html and js.

JTenerife··on Firefox Hardware Report for Web Developers
I'm running 32 GB Ram for 5 years without the siltiest stability issue. ECC is probably for really, really big machines 128 GB up or overall an overrated myth.
JTenerife··on Firefox Hardware Report for Web Developers
I think he thought about upgrading to Windows 10, not to a Mac.
JTenerife··on Firefox Hardware Report for Web Developers
Even I'm no longer fond of upgrading my OS. Still refusing macOS Sierra. My PC is on Windows 10, but honestly, Windows 7 did the job pretty well. My parents hate every change on their devices. So does almost everyone I know who's not an enthusiast. So yeah, I agree. 95 % of the people need very basic hardware and a small, simple OS.
JTenerife··on On Getting Older in Tech
Younger people are not smarter. They might learn faster new things. On the other hand, older people understand related new things much better as they already have a large context (experience). The biggest difference of my current self (44) to my younger self is that I did spend much more energy in my projects when I was younger. I created results much faster at the cost of limited consideration. Now, I can still burn for a while, but not as long as when I was younger.
JTenerife··on Is Facebook’s Massive Open Office Scaring Away Developers?
A couple of years ago I was working at a car company in Melbourne (Holden). They also had a huge open plan. But it was devided into smaller areas and ultimately 4-work-place-cubicles by about 1.2 m tall noise reducing movable walls. Also, they had meeting rooms and facilities to devide the huge floor.

Noise and distraction was quite effectivly reduced but communication was supported.

JTenerife··on Hello from Orkut
Shameless marketing bullshit. All they want is our money (personal data). I don't have to install the app to already know that you have to agree to allow access to everything on our phones.
JTenerife··on Google collects metadata from Android phones
And people freak out about some Microsoft telemetry collection.
JTenerife··on Google collects metadata from Android phones
The whole point of big data is to collect whatever is available and reason about how to use it afterwards. So I guess we can be pretty sure that Google collects as much as they can.
JTenerife··on A Tragic Loss
The reason why most other manufacturers haven't released their autonomous driving is not that their systems aren't as sophisticated as Tesla's, but that all systems out there aren't ready yet. Tesla is stellar in many ways but to release their autopilot was way to risky.
JTenerife··on Ansible 2.1 Released, with Network Automation, Containers
I love and hate Ansible. It has simplified so many things for me, but also had some annoying bugs and regressions. Somehow I've lost trust in the codebase. Also performance is a showstopper. I need a tool to develop, I just can't wait > 10 min for an iteration. I usually end up modifying my server's config files manually and then build the Ansible templates.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of a better alternative.

JTenerife··on Ansible 2.1 Released, with Network Automation, Containers
Exactly. This whole "declare your environment" thing with Ansible doesn't work.

I've completely mixed experiences with Ansible. Yes, it's easy to get started, but it's certainly annoying having to create playbooks for removing stuff to get a clean state.

JTenerife··on Docker, CoreOS, Google, Microsoft, Amazon to Develop Common Container Standard
I don't understand how you configure your host-specific servicc dependencies, e.g. connection strings. Ansible (Puppet, Chef) does variable interpolation / templating for this purpose.
JTenerife··on Apple's Cyclone Microarchitecture Detailed
Good on Apple! That's the best that can happen to us customers. Even for an Android / Windows guy like me :-).
JTenerife··on Microsoft Azure: Cutting prices on compute and storage
Do you know that (have experienced, been told by a trustworthy source) or do you just assume?

So far, I had no issues regarding downtime at Azure at all. All downtimes were as stated in their policy.

JTenerife··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
Actually, Android is not entirely open source. Some key components are closed source, that's why project like cyanogenmod exist.
JTenerife··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
I can't believe it either. And it doesn't stop there. Car companies start putting Android in their cars and really think customer will like it. I wouldn't even buy an Oracle DB but use Postgres, even if this seems a bit too paraniod. Everything Open Source and no public services / hosting is the only answer.
JTenerife··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
So, you agree to what kevingadd wrote.
JTenerife··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
Right, MS still wins. But for how long? American companies looking at difficult times due all this issues. Why should German or French companies rely on MS or Apple or Intel products when they have to face industrial spying. I don't even want to know the extent of the advantage american companies have gained due to NSA and othera spying.
JTenerife··on Microsoft defends its right to read your email
And use what alternative? Google, Apple, Facebook? Ubuntu cloud? Really? Is our data more save at Ubuntu services? You seem to be under the wrong impression that it's a problem we can solve by avoiding products of one company. As long as we're dealing with companies we're dealing with issues like that regardless of the image these companies try to create.

Use the internet as it was a public place. Remeber you can't even trust ssl connections (see Apple by mistake, NSA by purpose).
