JCharante··on NYC Mayoral Inauguration bans Raspberry Pi and Flipper Zero alongside explosives
why not just list "exposed circuit boards" in the ban?
JCharante··on Show HN: Gemini Pro 3 imagines the HN front page 10 years from now
I think it's pretty mediocre because there are too many notable events in 1 day. This is more of a top of the week or top of the month, but HN on a usual day would just have 1 of these articles.
JCharante··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
I had a bad roommate who when I asked the people in the house to turn the music down he would tell them to turn it up, and he constantly had annoying guests in our tiny room. Fuck Patrick you know who you are..

I prefer to cycle between addictions of modafinil and caffeine, you shouldn't chronically use 1 drug forever
JCharante··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
That’s some cool tech!
JCharante··on Ask HN: My family business runs on a 1993-era text-based-UI (TUI). Anybody else?
Have you ever been to a Marriott? They have something called MARSHA depending on the property. Once you log in it's basically a command line interface filled with abbreviations. As a high schooler in 2016 I used to train people at a reservations call center on how to use Marsha. It's super unintuitive but surprisingly everyone can wrap their heads around it eventually. Ok maybe 9 out of 10. You could decline to learn Marsha and work for properties that use a GUI like Opera PMS (for us it was mainly IHG properties). You got a pay raise if you learned Marsha. Opera was great, they later started upgrading to some bloated crap with lots of padding between buttons.

IIRC Marsha has transactions so you can build up a reservation and make queries in the process. There's even test properties in production so you can practice making/reserving/retrieving reservations.

JCharante··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
AWS CodeArtifact can act as a proxy and fetch new packages from npm when needed. A bit late for that though but sharing if you want to future proof against the yearly us-east-1 outage
JCharante··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Oh damn that ruins all our builds for regions I thought would be unaffected
JCharante··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Ring is affected. Why doesn’t Ring have failover to another region?
JCharante··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
Why does everyone have such short timelines to show progress? So what if it takes 50 years to develop, we’ll have AGI for the next million years
JCharante··on Vietnam Airlines Data Breach
Vietnam is particularly bad with breaches. For about 25 cents you can send a telegram bot a phone number and it will immediately reply with DOB, ID number, Home Address, Facebook profiles, Instagram profiles. I know this because everyone gets a freebie and I tested it out. For most twenty-somethings people's home address in the leaks are their parents home in the countryside. It's a security nightmare for any girl, especially when they leave parcels containing name & phone number in the mailrooms of condo towers.

> how is one going to use this data to cause a loss the data owner?

1 email to my sister going "I have hacked into your computer and know xyz I'll spill your secrets unless you pay" was enough to make her freak out. It's all stuff that can be obtained from these leaks.

you could say the same for being born on Earth instead of a 10x bigger planet. Also starships don't have to be that small.
JCharante··on Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5B to settle lawsuit with book authors
I think legally nobody knows why he was downloading the content to the point where he had to come to his hidden laptop to swap out hard drives of papers.

but also prior to that he had written the guerilla open access manifesto so it wasn't great optics to be caught doing that

I'm someone willing to shell out for SaaS and I don't see nebula being significantly better than just paying for youtube premium (which I do). They have some exclusive content but paying to watch a subset of content ad-free is just not going to work out (on a large scale, I know they're worth like $200m but that's much less than $1t)

JCharante··on WeightWatchers files bankruptcy
Agreed that you can feel the difference. Prior to the meds I would feel hungry, but after I wouldn't feel hungry anymore but bored. I'd have the instinct to eat, but I would think "Eh I don't want food, I'm not hungry" but I would still feel the urge to do something.

but no one claims that it's a way to get you into good shape. Just a way to not be obese.
