JCBird1012··on Killing TurboTax
The part you're missing is that as a part of the acquisition, Intuit was required by the Justice Department to divest the "tax" portion of Credit Karma - so no, they're not the same company. Credit Karma, the main app, is Intuit. The tax portion of Credit Karma is not.

JCBird1012··on Apple silicon M1 as-a-Service
If it's already in a cooled data center, removing it could mean being able to fit more Minis in a rack with little downside to thermals. The aluminum case makes sense when you're not in a climate-controlled environment.
JCBird1012··on Rudy Giuliani got monoclonal antibodies. You probably can’t
That's just the name of the game when you have someone high up in power looking out for you.

I wonder how the pressure from above manifested itself in that triage room. Probably something along the lines of "take extra good care of this person... or else"

JCBird1012··on Show HN: iOS14 weather (METAR) widgets for pilots
Congrats on the new PPL!

I love the app so far - but it would be amazing if the widget was location aware and could grab the METAR for the nearest reporting airport (that might be some work, but doable)

Thanks again and put all that App Store proceeds to good taildragger time! ;)

JCBird1012··on T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T phone calls are failing across the US
There were early reports that Level 3 was having some routing issues earlier today, but it's been confirmed that they're not having any problems whatsoever (for anyone who may have been suspecting that)

JCBird1012··on Emergency Response to the Tesla Model 3 [video]
If you look closely, it appears the Model 3 they used in the dash displacement later on in the video had some damage on the sides — it may have already been salvaged or totaled.

At least they made good use of a basically dead vehicle assuming that's true.

JCBird1012··on IINA – A modern video player for macOS
Another thing that irks me is the inconsistency of VLC's UX/UI from Windows/Linux and MacOS.

In my experience, VLC on MacOS feels rather unpolished compared to the Windows/Linux variants (maybe because they're using Qt and MacOS presumably isn't) but I've generally always have had a smoother experience with VLC on Windows and Linux as opposed to Mac from everything from playing local files to streaming over the network.

JCBird1012··on How old is “too old”?
Age doesn't breed competence, just as it doesn't breed incompetence either.
