Isthatablackgsd··on Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds
> I am tempted to try a sleep study and see what I might learn.

I strongly recommend to get sleep study, they will help to find the root of the symptoms.

10 years ago, I have issues with my sleeping pattern, waking up tired and still tired during the day. After my sleep study, I discovered I have sleep apnea which affects how I breathe during my sleeping cycle. After the diagnosis, I got a CPAP from my insurance and been using it ever since. It improved my sleep quality and I am able to dream more often than before.

If you have the same diagnosis as mine in the future, it will take some time to get used to Bi/CPAP. It can take up to a year to get used to it, it took me two years get used to wearing a mask. I was horrified to learn from my Somnologist that 90% of his patients are not consistent with CPAP usage or don't bother to use them. I know a friend's husband, who is a Physician Assistant, have the same diagnosis and refused to use the CPAP. His wife been begging him to use it because she can hear how he sleep during the night. Still to this day, he refused to use it and still complaining about the sleep quality.

> HEVC is great for giving you quality in a smaller file size, for your local video files.

This is a huge plus in fansub anime scene. 10 years ago, majority of anime are in H264 (720p/1080p 8bit) which is normally 1±GB for each episode that are consist of 25 min. If I want to watch one anime, it will consume about 20 GB of space. Now, majority of them are in HEVC (1080p 10bit) which are about 300± MB for each episode.

There is an extension that I used in Firefox, Markdownload. They have one for Chrome as well. It does excellent job converting webpage to markdown. Its have selection copy and optional webpage information that use properties tag.

There are some website (Hacker News for example) that Markdownload couldn't convert it to .MD but will preserve it with HTML instead.

There is one state agency in USA that requires wet black ink for contracts. I forgot which state it is, this happened two years ago. They said no expectations, it have to be wet black signature, period. They will inspect the PDF to check the signature that it is not e-signed.

It was odd because I handled federal and state contracts in previous job, they don't have a problem with e-signature.

Isthatablackgsd··on How Soap Works: The Science Behind Handwashing
Pine sap are not water soluble, even with soap. Pine sap is resin based, resins need a different solvent that can dissolve it such as alcohol or mineral spirits. It the same for wax (THC/CBD) resins, they need alcohol to clean it off.

It the same for blood stains on clothing. They are not generally water soluble, you could get them out if you put it under cold water if the stain is still fresh. Hydrogen Peroxide can dissolve blood stains (fresh or old) since it can be used as a solvent.

Don't forget contact too. It was difficult to find contact information on some sites. I remember 10 years ago contact information are usually at the bottom of the main page or in the nav menu. Now, it took some soul searching to find it where they buried it in the submenu. Sometime I usually use Google Maps to get the address or phone number since some site don't make it easier to find it
Isthatablackgsd··on Apple TV Plus is getting a price hike – and other Apple subscriptions are, too
I agree with you. My comment is an response to their price hike. Usually when it comes to price hike, there are justification for it. My point is that Apple don't have a justification to increase their subscription pricing because they don't includes many things in the catalog without paying extra. The sub includes Apple Originals which is not wrong with that, it feels they should include more than their original contents to get a better deal out of their subscription.
Isthatablackgsd··on Apple TV Plus is getting a price hike – and other Apple subscriptions are, too
I felt their library catalog is lackluster compared to other streaming services. The contents I want to watch are usually buy, rent or with supplemental subscription. They have a reasonable tv shows selections but most of them seems to be Apple Original. Their movie catalog is very lacking, not sure if it is a specific genre (Horror) seems non-existent or require to buy, rent or other subs instead of including with Apple TV+.

There is a difference between double clicking the CSV file vs importing from within. Importing via Get Data > CSV will bring up PowerQuery which only made a copy of the source file and allows me to modify the data without affecting the original file. If I made a mistake after transforming, I can go back to PowerQuery (without importing again) and undo the step then adjust the modifications. That is the beauty of PowerQuery. Even in the wizard, it does allow me to set the data type of the columns before opening. Users generally skip that step ahead and get down to the data.

Problem with importing is that laypeople are not familiar with PowerQuery and it can be overwhelming for lot of users.

It didn't make it less shitty. The problem is on the between the keyboard and the chair. If users take the time to be familiar with the wizard and PowerQuery, a lot of miscorrection would be avoid in the first place.

Isthatablackgsd··on USB-C head-to-head comparison
I'm not a EE. It is my understanding that to fully test 24 pins would includes putting a full load of higher wattage through those wiring to ensure they are capable of transferring. Higher wattage which means it needs a larger transformer to output that large amount of power or it would need a 200+ watts power brick to supply the wattage. That includes needing safety/failsafe components to protect itself and the device it is connected to, thus increasing the risk of potential damage if it was mishandled. I won't be surprised if the cable reporting that it can handle higher wattage when it is not in reality. Also, this includes the testing system to ensure it is handling rigorously without damaging it.

I don't know the cost of the such device, I am assuming the higher cost based on other devices for other thing such as ethernet cable tester such as Fluke which are $100+.

Isthatablackgsd··on USB-C head-to-head comparison
I'm assuming it would involves more ICs which it can bump the cost of the testing kit exponentially to test all of the pins.

> The homeless crisis is better described as a mental health and substance abuse and addiction crisis.

It is not always like that. I met people who are homeless and living in the car, they don't have mental health, substance or addiction problem. They are homeless because they couldn't afford the housing cost (including apartments).

The homeless crisis is a direct result of the housing rising costs. Los Angeles and San Diego in Southern California have increasing homeless population due to housing cost. I remember 12 years ago, LA downtown have a smaller homeless popultion and they are usually out of the way. I visited my friend this year who lives in LA and homeless people are in every block of downtown which is barely a thing 12 years ago. This is the result of the housing cost crisis.

You might be wondering why the homeless couldn't move to somewhere else? The thing is they can't because metropolis cities have a better social services they can provide for homeless populations and larger access to facilities within a block than a suburban or rural cities. Majority of them don't have access to transportation that they can afford.

30 years ago, the homeless are a result of mental health, substance abuse and addiction crisis. Now, that changes because of other factors such as rising housing costs which is a bigger factor.

What I found those information in Reddit is that they are current with the information than SO. The results from SO are dated back to '08 to '17 and they are often outdated. If the thread is locked in Reddit, they can create a new post and add the link to locked thread in the comment and seeking for more solutions, they are often keep it up. Compared to SO which will locked it up for being "dupe".

This is particular annoying when it comes to CLI tools. Often the search top result will show outdated SO post that the command arguements are depreciated, it took me hours to find this out after couldn't figure out why the command are not working. If I search the problem with site:reddit.com, the answer are usually relevant and current with a working command.

SO's overaggressive moderation are preventing the new information from being relevant. That's why people flocks to GitHub, Discord, Reddit, and Steam forums because they don't share the SO moderation philosophy.

> However like you said, the problem is not the ads themselves it is the tracking that comes along for the ride.

Not only tracking, ads can carry malware and viruses from malicious sites. They also can bog down the browser like Fandom wiki for example. Ads company are part of the problem since they don't screen them for malicious stuff.

I don't mind ads in general. I don't like it when they are in my face, lagging my mobile browser (Fandom wiki), demanding for notifications (redirector sites), autoplaying twitch stream (Fandom wiki), plastered the front page of search result (Google), and misleading games ads (mobile games).

I do have a few site that are whitelisted in uBlock because those site uses ads that are reasonable. Unfortunately, the rest of them are blocked because they can't keep it in moderation. I understand they need to make money to provides free contents, but that didn't mean they can use the ads like it is a wild wild West.

It wasn't fair to blame it on FTC and SEC. The blame is on the US Congress, they have the power to create and enact laws. They also can create law to limits the power of the federal agencies if they want to. They had a lot of opportunities to do something for us and they barely did anything except for corporations. Federal agencies only can do much within the scope of their power and laws.

Isthatablackgsd··on Show HN: I got tired of reading "This posting has been deleted by its author"
Especially solutions for various software and stuff.

I ran into an rare issue with one software last year that I couldn't remember what it is. I saw the error in the log and posted it in Google. There are only one Reddit post in search of this error. The deleted user deleted the comment of the solution, preventing anyone from fixing the issue. That deleted comment have more than 200 child comments for thanking for the simple solution and other are asking other what are the solution after the deletion.

Some got around by quoting the comment to for those deletion situations. I get they want to protect their privacy and whatnots. It is rather infuriating when it is the only solution in the entire internet that are deleted.

Isthatablackgsd··on MP3 vs. AAC vs. FLAC vs. CD (2008)
Not surprising about the MP3 pre-echo. I remember reading a comment while back, I think it was in Reddit. Someone posted a comment about how they bought a CD that have 50s/60s music for their grandparent and gave it them as Christmas gift. Their grandparent are graceful about the gift but they didn't use it very often. They inquired about why they are using the vinyl over a crystal clear CD. The grandparents said they loves the hissing and other sounds that are prevalent on the vinyl. They said it made it part of the music and they have strong memory of it during their era. The CD completely removed those sounds and felt it is unnatural sounds they are not used to. They felt it is too clean.

People have strong relations with their musics that they are used to while growing up. Nostalgia are powerful memories and they don't want their music unsullied from something that they grew up with.

My understanding that BW have superior auto-fill features and wide support for different OS. Keepass don't have auto-fill for browsers, Keepass have to rely on third-party to provide the auto fill features and various apps for all variety of OS.

I'm a Keepass user since 2006 and never had a problem with them. My database is saved in OneDrive and always keep local copy in my system. If OneDrive is down, my local copy is always there for me.

I have Intel NUC (i7 8559U) for Jellyfin server and 1gig connection. No shuttering issue in my home network, it run flawless in HTML5 Player, Jellyfin's ExoPlayer and MX Player Pro.

Likely the issue is the transcoding process, you would need look into that. It could be the CPU is not transcoding quickly enough, I/O bandwidth issue (CPU to hard drive or vice versa), QuickSync are not enabled in Intel CPU. Newer video codecs (HEVC/AV1), audio codecs, 10-bit, higher resolutions are a big factor in transcoding.

Isthatablackgsd··on Plex announced to block instances on German hosting provider Hetzner
It depends on the client's (the one you are streaming to) range of codec support. If you are streaming to the TV that your TV don't have specific codecs that it can decode, then it will transcode to the TV specification. If the file is in AVC (2.654) but the audio codec is not supported by the TV, then Jellyfin will transcode it. If you are watching the stream via the browser (HTML5 player), it have a limited range of codec it can support hence the transcoding. If your source file are in HEVC/AV1, browsers don't have a way to decode it. Jellyfin's ExoPlayer also don't a way to decode HEVC/AV1 and limited range of audio codecs.

If you want DirectPlay, then it best to use the external player for it. You have to set it up in the setting in Jellyfin to use the external player. For Android, Jellyfin can DirectPlay to MX Player Pro. I use Jellyfin in my Android tablet and set MX Player Pro as external player, it works flawless without shuttering.

Also I learn that it is best to enable QuickSync if you have Intel. With QS, it can transcode effectively this way.

Edit I saw your reply to other commenter. Browsers ("web-native") does not support MKV, unfortunately. If you want to run it in the browser without transcoding, the file need to be in MP4.
