Isinlor··on Google to remove all VPN ad blockers that don’t comply with their policy
EU Commission has quite extensive and nimble executive powers with regard to gatekeepers like Google and Apple to prevent that.
Isinlor··on Google to remove all VPN ad blockers that don’t comply with their policy
Now they will be forced to allow them on Google Play directly with user-friendly install.
Isinlor··on Google to remove all VPN ad blockers that don’t comply with their policy
Next year digital markets act will go in full power in EU. Google will have to allow alternative app stores on Google Play.

Right now Google does not allow alternative app stores like F-Droid (FOSS), Steam etc. on Google Play.

The important part is that it will be user-friendly install, instead of preinstalled app or hacky dev-like experience.

Isinlor··on Moral Toddlers Making a Mess
Capitalism is benefiting the world enormously. Any currently realistic damage from climate change can not be compared to the benefits of market economies.

But it is theoretically (game-theory) and practically (e.g. collapse of the Atlantic northwest cod fishery) true that market economy has a failure mode known as the tragedy of the commons.

The solution to global warming is cap and trade system. We cap the allowed emissions according to the climate goals and trade the remaining allowances for the emissions.

Isinlor··on Moral Toddlers Making a Mess
Everything is being tried with smaller or bigger success.

IMO capitalism and state interventions are the most successful.

EU Emissions Trading Scheme is probably one of the best methods.

Cap emissions according to the climate goal and trade the resulting emission allowances.

Isinlor··on Modern PHP features – PHP 8.0 and 8.1
> That would help, I would argue, with killing many of the PHP-specific criticisms

I don't see why appeasing critics should be the goal of PHP.

Removing $ and ; signs doesn't help me at all. I actually like the "$" sign. Maybe little bit less ;, but I don't really notice it.

But I would certainly notice the mess of splitting language syntax into two separate branches.

Breaking changes in language are not fun to address and take away the time from building features.

I would be a lot more happy with generics. Or scalar objects, something like:

$string = "abc";

var_dump($string->length()); // int(3)

var_dump($string->startsWith("a")); // bool(true)

https://github.com/nikic/scalar_objects

That would make PHP standard library a lot easier and fun to use.

China declared that it will use force in Taiwan if "possibilities for a peaceful reunification should be completely exhausted".

From Chinese Anti-Secession Law:

Article 8: In the event that the "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces should act under any name or by any means to cause the fact of Taiwan's secession from China, or that major incidents entailing Taiwan's secession from China should occur, or that possibilities for a peaceful reunification should be completely exhausted, the state shall employ non-peaceful means and other necessary measures to protect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Isinlor··on What did Mary know? A thought experiment about consciousness (2013)
I'm quite sure that my immune system provides me with experiences.

For example, I certainly can feel swollen lymph nodes.

My memory of swollen lymph nodes is about as vivid or detailed as that of headache.

Isinlor··on What did Mary know? A thought experiment about consciousness (2013)
I distinctly remember a situation where I was being confused whether my hand was wet or not when wearing gloves. My hand was in fact not wet back then. I went to test it again to refresh my memory and the experience in glove is not identical, but it is certainly sufficiently close to have a potential to confuse. Especially when submerging a hand with glove and without glove the experience is very similar, the biggest difference is when you get the hand out of the water.

The glove provides quite a good approximation.

Isinlor··on What did Mary know? A thought experiment about consciousness (2013)
> I would argue, in the first case, stimulating your visual nerve with the identical signal as the color red would produce would be seeing red. Your argument is akin to saying that someone born profoundly deaf with a cochlear implant has never heard anything!

I don't really object to that. My conclusion is that you can know what red is on the level of qualia without getting in contact with approximately red wavelength light. You can know what sound is without getting in contact with pressure waves. You can know what wetness is without getting in direct contact with water.

> I also think this is a poor thought experiment, because it necessarily involves water, image Bob exists in a plane of reality without liquid water entirely, would it be feasible for him to experience wetness?

I don't know. In that plane of reality we would not have evolved a mechanism for sensing wetness.

I don't know if it's possible to experience being in a spacial 2 dimensional reality or spacial 4 dimensional reality. My guess would be yes, but it would require significant alternations to our bodies, mostly brain structures.

Our experience of reality is almost certainly very limited vs. what's possible. There exist distinct human personalities who can see trough each other eyes and communicate with their minds - I'm talking about craniopagus twins.

I'm looking forward to high-bandwidth computer-brain interfaces. Some people may actually get to experience how it is to be a computer or whether it feel like anything at all.

Isinlor··on What did Mary know? A thought experiment about consciousness (2013)
> What is “wet” then? Liquid clinging to your skin through surface tension and other forces?

Yes.

> If your hand is submerged in a liquid that will not cling to your skin at all, is your hand “wet” while it is still submerged?

No. If you submerge your hand in mercury you will not get wet. The same if you coat you hand in aerogel. It is empirical fact that people do not describe this situations as being wet.

E.g.: https://youtu.be/GcdB5bFwio4?t=225

Isinlor··on What did Mary know? A thought experiment about consciousness (2013)
If she knows everything about colors then she could remove her retina and stimulate her visual nerve with the identical signal as color red would produce.

I'm 100% confident that she would experience red without actually seeing red.

Consider a separate thought experiment. A Bob lives in a bubble that does not allow liquids to exists outside his body. If he puts his hand in a completely dry glove sticking outside the bubble and surrounded by water he will experience wetness despite having no contact with water.

We know that our body does not have direct sensors of wetness. We experience pressure and heat loss as wetness. So you 100% can experience wetness without getting wet.

Isinlor··on China allegedly dumps bad chips on Russia
My country, Poland, has been under Russian occupation one way or another for the past 200 years. After WWI we had to fight with them to establish our border. We managed 20 years of peace before they allied with Hitler and attacked as again.

Last Russian soldiers left Poland in 1993.

> if US hadn't spent the last few decades marching NATO's borders towards Moscow

They would be in Poland right now. Completely unwelcomed. With me at the front lines. (I was born 40km from Kaliningrad)

Also, US was not marching anywhere. We wanted to join NATO and EU.

Central and Eastern Europeans have agency and goals independent from USA.

> There is no need to start fighting if there was no threat and the Ukraine government had held together through 2014.

Russian were string trouble in split Ukraine long before that.

The biggest issue with Ukraine for Russians was neighborhood of EU and prosperous Poland.

In 1991 after collapse of Soviet Union Polish and Ukrainian economies were exactly the same size. Last year Polish economy was 3 times bigger than Ukrainians. Ukrainians are associating success of Poland with the EU membership and related reforms.

And again people, dammit, have agency. We want prosperity and security.

WE DO NOT WANT TO BE BUFFER STATES.

Also, 2014 revolution was over joining EU, not NATO. Ukrainians were not that excited about NATO in 2014 until Russia invaded them. Then they decided to put the goal of joining NATO into constitution.

It is USA/EU strategic interest to avoid too deep dependency on Taiwan. We should support the status quo there as people of Taiwan are prosperous and peaceful nation. But we can't be caught off guard by China as EU was caught off guard by Russia.

There is a logical reason for Russia. Making us suspicious of each other.

German citizens will be suspecting USA. Exactly what Putin would want right now.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
Belarus is rather unimportant. They are 10 million country with GDP per capita lower than Russia, spending little bit more than 1% of GDP on their army. Belarusian army has also zero combat experience. They have no reason whatsoever to die in Putin's war. No glory, no territory that they want, no hatered of Ukrainians. There were soldiers openly calling for desertion which was rather impressive at least for me. It's possible that Lukashenko was actively trying to join the conflict, but the army told him no.

Poland was offering something of the form of peacekeeping mission and Zelensky was afraid that it could lead to freezing of the conflict based on his own reporting in an interview with Meduza. Ukrainians wanted to go on counteroffensive from the beginning.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
As a Pole I fully agree with you.

Also with regard to the nuclear threat.

Russia can threaten with nuclear holocaust at any time for whatever reason.

They could say tomorrow: give up all land that belonged at some point to Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact or we will start nuclear holocaust. They could even demand Alaska. Then what? We give in? No!

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
Well, we will have to. Russians already cut us off the gas. That's done.

EU leaders have to start behaving like we are in an economical war, because we are.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
We need to get out of gas anyway due to the global warming.

We also can't keep being vulnerable to Russian black mail.

We need to increase investment in renewable power and build more nuclear power plants.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
NATO intervention would not trigger WW3. Nobody is interested in invading Ukraine, besides Russia.

Also, Russia is capable to start a thermonuclear global holocaust at any point. They could literally say tomorrow - either you give us Warsaw Pact / Russian Empire territories or we start a thermonuclear global holocaust. What then?

But Ukrainians are not asking for military intervention. They are asking for stuff like ATACMS.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
Ukraine is not even asking for military intervention.

Poland was offering intervention, Ukraine refused.

They want weapons. Offensive, long range weapons for counteroffensives. They have plenty of very motivated and capable men.

NATO can do that easily. We just adhere to some imaginary list of things that can and can not be delivered.

The cost of gas shortages are many times the cost of weapons and weapons make actual, immediate difference for people on the ground.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
Ukraine does not ask for military interventions.

My country Poland offered military intervention during the first trip to Kyiv after invasion, Ukraine refused.

Ukrainians want weapons. Last I check they were asking for stuff like ATACMS.

Listen to what Ukrainians are saying. They know what is the best for them in the current situation.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
They need more and they need long range weapons.
Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
What should we do if Russia attacks Finland tomorrow? Or Baltics or Poland?

Well, good game, now give up, they have nukes? ...

Also Ukraine does not ask for military interventions.

Poland offered military intervention, Ukraine refused.

Ukrainians want weapons.

Isinlor··on Estonia’s inflation hit 25% year-on-year in August, energy prices to blame
It's not equivalent to declaring WW3.

Russia is not capable of fighting NATO and nobody besides Russia has any interest in Ukraine invasion.

But NATO soldiers are not needed in Ukraine. Ukrainians just need weapons.

Ukrainians have plenty of capable and very motivated men.

And the weapons are cheap, very cheap in comparison to loses from gas etc.

Isinlor··on After years of setbacks, NASA’s SLS moon rocket is ready to fly
First of all, Falcon 9 is a heavy lift vehicle. Falcon Heavy is a super heavy lift vehicle. Exactly the same class as SLS.

The biggest issue is that SLS is not even available. NASA flagship Europa Clipper mission had to be moved out of SLS to Falcon Heavy due to lack of availability of SLS.

Also interplanetary travel is not only in scope of nation states, but also private companies. Perseverance rover has been launched on ULA Atlas V rocket.

But more importantly SLS+Orion can not deliver people to the surface of the Moon. That's the job that NASA has given to Starship and SpaceX.

Also, huge chunks of Lunar Gateway (let's skip the fact that Lunar Gateway is useless in itself) will be delivered by SpaceX with Falcon Heavy. Also, resupply of Lunar Gateway will be done by SpaceX with Dragon XL.

Without SpaceX Artemis program will be failure whether you have SLS or not.

But you could get rid of SLS and Orion. You could use Falcon 9 with Crew Dragon or Boeing Starliner to load people to Starship in Earth orbit. Then you could send Starship to the Moon. It goes there currently anyway.

The kicker is that Starship will have the same internal volume as ISS, many times bigger than Lunar Gateway + Orion.

Isinlor··on Launch Attempt Scrubbed
You can invent elaborate conspiracy theories about how Musk is laying to everyone including NASA.

And how SpaceX does pro-bono work for NASA in hopes of ripping them up later.

How NASA, Jeff Bezos, Government Accountability Office as well as courts are blind to it.

(Bezos already dragged NASA trough GAO and courts with regard to HLS)

And Musk is doing that instead of doing it in the honest and straightforward way like Bezos by just lobbing the Congress and asking for a lot of money.

Or you could just accept SpaceX track record on space programs and that SpaceX delivers cheap services.

Isinlor··on After years of setbacks, NASA’s SLS moon rocket is ready to fly
Falcon 9 + Crew Dragon and Starliner (hopefully, once it flies) can support Starship in LEO.

Then Starship can get you to Lunar and Mars surface.

SLS is not pushing SpaceX on anything anymore, because Falcon Heavy took almost everything besides Orion from SLS.

That's Falcon Heavy mind you, not Starship.

SLS was important for assembling Lunar Gateway. Lunar Gateway itself is useless and was invented for justifying SLS existence. But if we skip that, then funny fact. Lots of pieces of Lunar Gataway will fly on Falcon Heavy! Resupply to Lunar Gateway will also fly with SpaceX on Dragon XL and Falcon Heavy.

There was also NASA flagship Europa Clipper mission.

But due to lack of available SLS vehicles, NASA shifted it away from SLS and it will fly on Falcon Heavy.

You just can't make it up.

Isinlor··on Launch Attempt Scrubbed
SpaceX is contracted to deliver people to the Moon surface for 2.8 billion dollars total (development + actual mission).

To do it they need around 6 launches for refueling in orbit.

Therefore, the very upper limit on a single Starship launch is 0.5 billion (2.8/6).

And that's without development cost of Starship HLS.

Single SLS launch cost without Orion, including development, will be around 4 billion dollars.

20 billion overall for SLS development + 20 billion for Orion development.
