InsideOutSanta··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
> nobody in the corporate world is using Linux desktops

This is the wrong comparison. An LLM provider isn't like a desktop OS; it's like a server OS. And everybody is using Linux for their servers.

> And let me know when your parents start using the Chinese LLMs on their own.

That already happened. To be fair, they're Chinese.

InsideOutSanta··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
> So we are just vibe patenting rubbish and rebranding it with AI?

"Patenting rubbish" is a description of pretty much all software patents since forever.

InsideOutSanta··on Tech sucks: You have to vote with your wallet, or nothing will change
Yeah, same. I have the phone I actually want, and then I have the phone I need because otherwise I couldn't function in society. It's workable but sometimes unpleasant, because I don't bring two phones with me, so I just can't do some things others can.

Exactly.

It's pretty obvious from context and from the specific example what I'm talking about.
InsideOutSanta··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
We're talking about corporations here. Of course they use Linux, and of course they'll provide their employees access to the LLMs that cost half the price and are 90% as good.

If they were profitable, they'd release real numbers and announce concrete plans for an IPO. They are very obviously not profitable; they just announced a $65B Series H two months ago.

They're almost literally setting money on fire.

InsideOutSanta··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
The question is not whether LLMs have value; the question is who will earn how much money off them. I don't see any scenario where the companies that put hundreds of billions into their models make that money back.
InsideOutSanta··on Tech sucks: You have to vote with your wallet, or nothing will change
The apps you actually need to participate in society (digital IDs, banking apps, etc.) will never run on your homegrown OS. Having a billion dollars changes nothing about the fact that you need either iOS or a Google-blessed Android version.
InsideOutSanta··on Tech sucks: You have to vote with your wallet, or nothing will change
Huawei can't sell fully functional phones anywhere outside of China, including in Europe. You need Google Mobile Services and the Google Play Store to be able to install stuff like your banking app, and the US government is preventing Huawei from shipping phones with it. China has its own app ecosystem, so they're fine locally but screwed everywhere else.
InsideOutSanta··on Tech sucks: You have to vote with your wallet, or nothing will change
People have been voting with their wallets since forever, and look where it got us.

The reality is that asking people to vote with their wallets does not work. But this specific case is even worse, because it's not possible to "vote with your wallet" to begin with.

The specific things the blog post notes are "how terrible the experience of developing apps for the iPhone/iPad is, how Apple takes 30% of all app store and in-app purchases, how awful Xcode is as a development environment"

So let's say you want to build a mobile app that actually reaches people. There's a duopoly, so you have to support Android and iOS. What are your options for "voting with your wallet" then? There's nothing you can buy that lets you reach iOS with your app without using Apple's ecosystem.

"Voting with your wallet" is what people tell you to do if they don't want you to do the things that actually work, which, in this case, is regulation. We have two companies controlling both viable mobile platforms. There is nowhere else to go for 99.9% of people. You can have a billion dollars, and you still can't "vote with your wallet." You're still going to own either an iPhone or an Android phone, and support both if you want to publish an app.

The obvious answer is that the two companies that control these platforms need to be regulated. Apple can play dumb if it's only Europe, but even so, the cracks are starting to show (e.g. Apple's recent copy/paste interoperability announcement). If the US joined in, the dam would break.

Yeah, I think that case is absolutely wild, because ostensibly the point of the recorded music was to showcase the strings.
InsideOutSanta··on Amazon circumvents Gilroy community vote for AI data center
> I think we should refrain extending “negative externality” to mean “things people don’t like that might affect them.”

But that's pretty much the definition of the term. It's a negative impact on a third party. If I'm living next to a data center, and it's noisy, or my electricity costs more, those are negative externalities.

There are real reasons not to want data centers next door, unlike 5G towers.

InsideOutSanta··on Amazon circumvents Gilroy community vote for AI data center
5G towers have no negative externalities except looking kinda dorky. In fact, they're nice; they improve your reception. The same cannot be said for data centers.

(Instead of just downvoting this, I'd appreciate it if you could point out exactly what I said is wrong. Thanks.)

Something went seriously wrong there, and I'm not sure it's just Claude copying an existing project bug-for-bug. For more context, see also this post from Gruber at Daring Fireball:

InsideOutSanta··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
We went from "obviously the doomers are wrong because who would be dumb enough to just let severely unaligned models loose on the Internet" to this. Insanity.
InsideOutSanta··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
In a functioning system, I would say that there would have to be some kind of government oversight over companies training models of this intelligence, and that OpenAI should be prevented from continuing their work until they get their act together.

But I guess in the actual world we live in, this is just something that happens, and we all shrug and move on and hope that nothing worse is going to happen tomorrow.

How are you even supposed to evaluate the security of a product before you buy it and have it in your hands? It's not like there's an ecosystem of outlets doing that kind of work for the hundreds of thousands of internet-connected devices out there.

And even when it's in your hands, who has the time and expertise to thoroughly review a product for security issues?

InsideOutSanta··on The AI Billboards Are Killing SF
I think it's alienating because people were told all their lives that their commercial impact is actual power, that they can "vote with their wallet". That has never been true, but now they're not even lying to us anymore.

Regular people have no relevant political power and no relevant economic power, and the people in power have stopped pretending that we do.

The world is not for us, we don't even matter enough to have billboards advertising to us anymore.

Correct, that has been prophesied by scripture:

"Thou shalt have three layers of LLMs, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt have, and the number of the counting of the LLM layers shall be three."
