Inhibit··on Teddit: a free and open-source Reddit front end focused on privacy
Not a knock on you but this reminds me why I hate speaking (writing) example via analogy.

There's so much horrible surrounding using "witch" as the noun, what with the traditional "hey, that's a nice plot of land you've got there" that proceeded the accusation.

That's your historical witch-hunt. A convenient way of killing your neighbor. Heck, maybe it's an appropriate analogy.

All those trees certainly cut down on the echo!

They also hate DIY "here's my design if anyone wants to use it" posts. Sharing that you did something seems to induce reddit wrath.

Inhibit··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?
I'm unsure about the statement. I've repaired many printers mechanically. The hardware is generally repairable and the mechanical parts aren't proprietary.

The software on the printers is whatever you buy. Some of them run on available print languages that you can code up your own driver for should you really want to.

And for the example cited, cartridges, Epson had offered a more expensive printer with a do whatever you want ink setup. And Brother lasers have so far accepted any carts I use without complaint.

As for hard to manufacture the entire printer is a molded plastic to reduce cost (massively) and a fabrication plant made printhead. Mass manufacture only for the huge price-break.

Having taken apart a color laserjet to repair the paper uptake I agree. That was a lot of engineering to make sure the paper moves through the path repeatably.
Inhibit··on Let's talk about safety of Pinephone
That's usually the case in the battery packs. Looks like I'll be ripping apart my battery when I get around to taking out the Pinephone.

Your tongue in cheek points are good.

But on that last bit I disagree. Many, many systems run nothing but stock open source kernel drivers under Linux. I daresay home systems with closed drivers are more of an exception. All those VMs in the "cloud".

Is it my imagination or is Google devoid of the ability to integrate it's different "products"?
Inhibit··on Ask HN: How to deal with internet addiction?
Instead of "what do I want to stop doing" frame it as "what would I like to be doing".

Get more engaged in something particular. Build your own car, for example. But that might just be me.

It's possible, that if you have free time to idle away reading, that your work isn't occupying as much of your time as you'd like.

Shift that free time usage to something you find more personally rewarding or that involves more in person social interaction.

It's tough. Bear in mind this is my own take and might not reflect the reality of your situation.

Inhibit··on Ask HN: Bootstrapped US founders, who do you use for health insurance?
I think what the previous poster is getting at is that in the US it may benefit you to have a more byzantine vehicle for your work. Such as an SCorp.

It'll take a bit more research and possibly some extra filing but you may benefit from it. In exchange for moving your income to a more employee like arrangement you'll be able to move things like this directly above the fold in some cases.

Or LLC filing as SCorp for federal tax purposes. Although that's the sort of thing you'll want to look at the 1040 rules for.
