Ingaz··on Internal FBI risk assessment of Bitcoin network [pdf]
I am Russian. Years ago I had strange experience: my friend invited me as unofficial expert.

I was amazed: the guys whom I talked were "right guys". One of them told me: "From the call log I can tell more than a guy think himself" (Excuse me for bad English) M

Ingaz··on CodernityDB — pure Python, NoSQL, fast database
I'm an architect in my firm and I'm tired of: a) .NET-ters who will use something only if it is .NET or at least Microsoft b) Javers who think that everything non-java is universal evil.

(We have 45% of .NET-ters, 35% of javers, 20% : devDBAs, Js-ers, others)

My propaganda is always: "Be programmers, mazafakerz!" And python is excellent tool for explaining ideas between this groups. Javer will not be offended if I show him .NET-code and otherwise.

For them python is "executable pseudo-code".

It will be sad for me if pythonistas became a caste like .NET, Java ... and Haskel (they are not a caste but have all possibilities to became one)

Ingaz··on CodernityDB — pure Python, NoSQL, fast database
The thing I like most in python is not python itself but a "pythonic way". "Pythonic" > Python.

In my opinion, it's not "pythonic" to use DBMS, just because it written in python.

So the "selling point" is flawed.

Disclosure: I'm using python since 2006. I've made a lot of evangelizing it. It is my weapon of choice for many tasks. And I will never use python for many other tasks. (Don't tell me about PyPy or Stackless)

Ingaz··on The Nature of Lisp
>>the concepts in Lisp, without really talking about Lisp directly too much

The book with the same feature is "ANTLR definitive guide".

When I read it I was like: "Ha! It sounds like LISP!", "Ha! It sounds like FORTH!", "Ha! It sounds like Prolog!"

And Terence Parr mentioned none of them.

Amazing!

Ingaz··on Quantum entanglement shows that reality can't be local
Correct if I'm wrong, but I think that Many Worlds Interpetation does not explain a thing. It's like religion - one can think it's possible, other - impossible. But it can't be proved or disproved
Ingaz··on Put Alan Turing on the next £10 note
Funny.

Imagine banknotes with Jack the Ripper, Batman, Terminator and others

Ingaz··on The Future of Markdown
docutils have this
Ingaz··on The Future of Markdown
I'm in the same boat as you.

I'm using reST for everything: docs for people (converting them to html and doc before sending), doc-comments in every language I use, be python, T-SQL, java or F#

I don't think it's ideal but it's just works

Ingaz··on The Future of Markdown
Why not just move to docutils?
Ingaz··on Beware the Alan Turing fetish
And I'm not OK with ONLY Turing occupying this position.

Von Neumann, Curry, Kholmogorov, McCartey, Armstrong, Norvig, many others (yes, I'm mixing alive and dead) - are they really not standing near Turing?

Ingaz··on Beware the Alan Turing fetish
Yes.

I suspect that in XXII computer industry will be epitomized by Jobbs. "Jobbs did computer industry".

Laughable, but surely possible

Ingaz··on AnandTech: Microsoft Surface Review
I do not understand this device.

As tablet it has big weight. As ultrabook - small screen and worse input. (And I don't like keyboard layout shown in pictures)

It's not contender for IPad/Android, it's not contender for ultrabooks.

Maybe if I had it in my hands - I had another opinion. Now I just don't understand this middle "Microsoft way"

Ingaz··on Array Languages Rock
You are right, but what I tell my programmers: if you want high performant SQL-query you can make 2 things: 1. Think carefully about data and write generic SQL without any DBMS specifics 2. Try to optimize everything with your DBMS specifics

The latter - almost never works. Be it Oracle, MSSQL, DB2 or PostgreSQL.

And even when it works - it's unacceptable.

We had a query in Oracle that executed several hours. Our Oracle DBA found a way to tweak Oracle that shrinked it to 30 minutes. It was interesting, but impossible to use in practice - we could not guarantee that other queries will go fine with this server settings. (Our DBA was the first who was against using in production)

Ingaz··on Why I Migrated Away From MongoDB
Funny.

The same problem exists with OLAP databases.

People trying to do MOLAP without building ROLAP. They are thinking that MS SASS, ESSBASE, Cognos or Qlikview will do some "magic" that eliminate the need to carefully think about data

Ingaz··on Russia reveals secret diamond field containing "trillions of carats"
It's new for me also.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl...

"It is not a diamond. Hardness of this phase (lonsdaleite) 1.54 times higher than that of diamond, and since we have here a nanosized crystallites of cubic diamond and lonsdaleite - it is very sticky matrix that defines high performance Popigai impactites. Lonsdaleite share in some specimens can reach 70%, "- said the official.

Ingaz··on Python Development on Linux and Why You Should Too
Very strange. It completely contradicts with my experience. Almost everything that easy to do in Linux is someway distorted or missing completely in Windows.

Basic things: apache, nginx, supervisord - underpowered or completely missing. Ipython is my favorite shell in Windows, but in Linux it works better (just because console is better in Linux).

Have you tried to run Django under IIS? I assure you - it's pain.

Ingaz··on How Hacker News Completely Changed My Life
I remember from "Founders at work" something like: "West Coast is the land of dreamers" and something about how it totally opposite with Boston and NYC (I don't remember who said this)

And I suppose that this is possible.

But: There is "life outside MKAD"

Even with: "Around half of Russian economy lives in Moscow region, formally or informally" - I remember that 75% of all money in Moscow

Ingaz··on How Hacker News Completely Changed My Life
Is it really so?

In Moscow a humorous proverb exists: "There is no life outside MKAD(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Ring_Road)

When I read PG (and others) about "there is no opportunity for [startups ... interesting productive life] except SF" - I think it's the same. Not true

Ingaz··on How Hacker News Completely Changed My Life
Yes. Not even "mentality & philosophy", he explains distinctly that his problem was communication and HN gave him auditory. Auditory that interested about his findings and problems. And even auditory that can solve part of his problems

(Excuse my runglish, I don't remember what I must write: "who" or "that" or "which")

Ingaz··on Garry Kasparov Arrested By Russian Police
That's truth. In Russia we do not have normal opposition.

Nemtsov - unpopular because of his past, Limonov - too radical, Kasparov - is just a clown.

Ingaz··on Back up your precious files on ordinary paper
Very funny. And not so impractical - send a letter with one side as description and other as full data.

For backups I can imagine such situation: "OMG! My HDD crashed!!! Ha! No panic! I made backups! Now I just need to restore them from this bunch of scheets. And my restore program is on this sheet. Now .. Erm.. Hm.."

Ingaz··on Steve Yegge: Notes from the Mystery Machine Bus
I am mostly agree with you, but:

>>Or compare the maturity of alternative JVM languages I will not list Scala, Clojure and IronRuby, but IronPython is very mature. And: F#.

F# in my opinion is more mature than Scala.

Ingaz··on Steve Yegge: Notes from the Mystery Machine Bus
"Architect" is highly overloaded term.

The only definition I personally find plausible is by Jonathan Alexander ("Codermetrics")

"Architects

Coders designated as “architects” are usually the more experienced members of the team. Their assignments may differ from other coders, with a higher percentage of complex tasks, including design tasks. They may also be expected to spend more time guiding and assisting other team members, to ensure that the software is well-designed and high-quality."

I think that I am architect-type programmer. I'm doing a lot of exploratory work but I'm not "sitting weeks without writing any code" - I'm writing prototypes. In my company the worst crap is born by our "thinkers". It is also well-specified crap.

Ingaz··on So long, silicon: Researchers create solar panels from cheap copper oxide
And aluminium is basically clay.

But 75% of the price of aluminium is electricity.

Ingaz··on Russ Olsen: The Best Programming Advice I Ever Got
The best comment was "The counter-measure is to make sure that no code is 'other people's code', and thus there is no good reason to stay out of it"

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1926692

Ingaz··on You'll never be Chinese
Russian people of Soviet era had the same complex.

We were taught that we have best science, culture, sport, military and most progressive state. Also we were strong but good, not as "prokliatye imperialisty" ("cursed imperialists")

It evaporated in '90s, but not completely - I often hear "we were ...."

Jerome K. Jerome wrote about the same complex in British people. If I recall correctly that must be in "Diary of a Pilgrimage"

Ingaz··on Iranian nuclear program hacked, made to play AC/DC
We do not know the real impact of stuxnet.

I can believe that some government idiots after looking Matrix sponsored "cyberwar".

I can believe that some smart guys really tried to write a first "cyberweapon".

I can believe that iranian intelligence service gladly playing this game.

I can't believe that a country with a lot of people with high education can have a problem with a worm.

Windows or not Windows - it does not matters. Sane persone can't overlook some strange process in OS.

Rootkits? Do you think that this kind of servers frequently rebooting?

And now it even plays AC/DC for "stupid iranians"!

Even lamerz can do nuclear physics! Process explorer for true genuises!

Ingaz··on Joe Armstrong: Why OO Sucks
>>But I do not think it's very useful to say that Erlang is object oriented, since it will confuse a lot of people

I find it useful to instill this kind of confusion in people around me.

"You talk about encapsulation? Look at erlang"

"Polymorphism? Haskel"

"OOP? Javascript, CLOS"

"Static/dynamic typing? Look here - your java code is in fact dynamic, if you're really want to taste real static - look at ML-family or something near"

Ingaz··on Joe Armstrong: Why OO Sucks
OOP as collection of some practical principles to structure code - is good.

But mandatory OOP and OOP as religion is something unforgivable for me.

Ingaz··on Joe Armstrong: Why OO Sucks
Agreed that processes in Erlang is even better objects than objects in OOP.

>>I cannot express my concurrency ideas-- that erlang makes super easy-- in the OO languages.

In fact main Erlang ideas are many times "stolen". I discover Erlang in: Scala (obvious), F# (also obvious), D (also obvious).

Actors + messaging = "DIY Erlang".

Although I do not know a language that makes code hotswapping as fundamental feature.
