Indyan··on Why India Will Displace China as Global Growth Engine
This would have been easier to believe ten years back. But, the last ten years have highlighted the single biggest threat to India's economic prosperity - a crippled central government. In a country where most people still vote for Loksabha (central government) elections based on local and regional issues, national parties like the Congress and BJP are being increasingly held hostage by local groups with a narrow agenda. Now, no policy of national importance can be decided upon without engaging in significant back channel politics.
Indyan··on SendGrid has terminated the employment of Adria Richards?
I don't agree with what Adria did, but this is a weak move by SendGrid. No one should have been fired over this. Period.
Indyan··on LG acquires webOS from HP, plans to use it in smart TV platform
Yeah. LG's high end smart TVs have something called Magic Remote. It's no kinect, but an improved version of this might work well with an WebOS adapted for the big screen. http://www.lg.com/global/magicremote/
Indyan··on LG acquires webOS from HP, plans to use it in smart TV platform
LG's 3D TV range is actually quite good. The Cinema3D series of smart TVs have a lot going for them including great display, beautiful elegant design, and an intuitive remote.
Indyan··on LG acquires webOS from HP, plans to use it in smart TV platform
Opera also has its own product for smart TVs and set top boxes, but not quite a full fledged mobile OS.
Indyan··on Olacabs, a bad User Experience
You are wrong. Olacabs is India's Uber. http://pandodaily.com/2012/10/31/assholes-shrug/

Indyan··on Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space?
You can't just chop off the page file. Disabling it entirely or reducing it significantly can and will affect system performance.
Indyan··on Labels in input fields aren’t such a good idea
Yes. But, it doesn't reappear as soon as you remove all text. The placeholder reappears after you remove the text, and change the focus.
Indyan··on Labels in input fields aren’t such a good idea
Exactly. Off late, I have been running into this issue a lot.

I use Lastpass to manage my authentication information, and I always let it auto-fill new signup forms. It's an incredibly smart piece of software, and gets things right most of the time. However, on occasions when it doesn't fill up a everything correctly, not having a label is a big disadvantage. I have to first clear out the text, de-focus the form-field (Tab or Shift+Tab), then read the field name and come back and fill up that field.

Indyan··on GoDaddy deletes my domains and charges me to restore them
I agree. NameCheap is a good option though. They have been leveraging GoDaddy's fuckups to gain new customers. Their social media antics have got them a lot of socially savvy customers. So they know that, if they stray, they will be flayed publicly, and all the goodwill will vanish quickly.

Another registrar I will recommend is Dynadot, simply because I have used them for several years without any hassle, and they have a live support that's actually helpful.

Indyan··on The CSS Trashman
Its the latter. The bottleneck here is resource availability. This is a free service, running on Heroku. He probably can't afford to just throw new worker dynos at it.

Indyan··on Calcutta girl who fled home & marriage at 17 returns as millionaire US innovator
Don't go by it's website, which hasn't been given a facelift in at least 6 or 7 years. However, having been a subscriber of Telegraph (India) for over a decade, I can say that it is not often inaccurate. It's the leading English daily (combined sales of #2 and #3 are less than Telegraph's) in Eastern part of India.
Indyan··on Show HN: Procrstn8 - A Reddit client app for Windows 8 PCs and Tablets
I am currently at work. Will download your app and take it for a spin once I am back home. However, a couple of remarks based on the screenshot: - Please offer a light theme. - Indicate the domain hosting the content. - Differentiate videos from other content.

You can take a look at how Reddit ET does it. I think that's a layout that can scale really well on tablets and desktops.

Indyan··on An open letter to Asus India
Not true. I know Apple doesn't care about India. But, Sony, HTC, LG, Samsung, Nokia and several others offer products at reasonable prices in India.
Indyan··on You Can’t Put A Price Tag On A TechCrunch Post
Err..what I understood from this article is that the PR firms were getting paid to get their clients into TC. They probably did this by cultivating relationships with the writers. It doesn't say that any of the writers were bribed.
Indyan··on Mozilla blogger bought 1 million Facebook entries (full name, e-mail) for $5
One additional data that I see in the list he purchased is email address, which is probably what the spammers would value the most.
Indyan··on IE10 on Windows 7 available in November
Really? Windows 8 is yet to be released, and Microsoft is already delaying product releases for Windows 7. I am already on Win 8, but if I was a Win 7 user, I would be pretty pissed. And going by their track record, in two years they are going to drop support for Win 7 altogether in Internet Explorer and other applications like Windows Movie Maker.
Indyan··on IE10 on Windows 7 available in November
They gave up Windows XP with IE 9. Keeping the same trend, they are giving up Vista with IE 10. In fact, Microsoft is actually getting worse. They are already treating Windows 7 users as second class citizens. IE 10 for Win 7 will only get a preview release in mid-november. Final release will probably come a few months after that. In comparison, Opera still supports Windows 2000, although it recommends at least using Windows XP.
Indyan··on A proposal for improving HN : it should cost a user Karma to post
I don't care much about karma. But, I do care about having the freedom to post stuff that I find interesting. Now, I am assuming that most of the noise will be either from new members or from members with low karma. If they are penalized something like 5 karma for submissions (and they can't submit if they don't have 5 karma), then that will both passively and actively discourage spamming. A karma threshold can also be applied to new users to encourage them to first participate int he discussion and understand the ethos of HN.

Edit: I want to clarify that I am in favour of deducting karma for new submissions. The comment system is already fairly balanced thanks to the option to downvote. What I am suggesting is essentially a mirror image of the parent article.

Indyan··on "Flick to tv" represents everything wrong with product design today
I have an S3, and the screenshot thing is actually very neat and handy. It is a bit wonky when you try to capture apps with scrollable windows, but it never misfires. You have to basically press the side of your palm on the screen and move it from left to right.
Indyan··on Samsung flew bloggers to Berlin, then threatened to leave them there
Another Indian blogger - Amit Bhawani, who was also there at the event has a different version of the story. http://www.amitbhawani.com/blog/samsung-mobilers-ifa-2012/ According to him, Samsung had always billed CJ as a promoter and not as a reporter. This seems to be a case of miscommunication. However, even in that situation, what Samsung did was extremely immoral. If they believed CJ was not playing his part they should have flown him back to India, had a discussion, and ejected him from the program. Not leave him stranded in a foreign country.
Indyan··on Samsung flew bloggers to Berlin, then threatened to leave them there
It may come as a surprise, but based on the various anecdotes "Nokia India" is actually among the few that gets how to handle the new media.
Indyan··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
Oh yeah..I got it wrong. So, US doesn't have the concept of grounding? Surprising, but I suppose that does explain the sparks.
Indyan··on The Differences Between Germany and the United States
"Many extension cords still come without a third hole for grounding in the US. When you plug things into electrical outlets, you'll often observe cute little sparks. That never happens in Germany."

So in Germany there is no concept of grounding? Why? Also, is there any scientific explanation behind no sparking in Gemany?

Indyan··on Live CERN Higgs Announcement in 20 Mins

Indyan··on Lonesome George, last-of-his-kind Galapagos tortoise, dies
- "Lonesome George, the last remaining tortoise of his kind." - "Some 20,000 giant tortoises still live on the Galapagos." That confused me a bit. My interpretation is that Lonesome George belonged to a species of giant tortoises that is not extinct, but there are still several other species of giant tortoises in the wild. Is that correct?
