InAnEmergency··on DigitalOcean opens a Singapore Datacenter
I don't know if that was ever the case, but at this point you do have to power off the droplet to make a snapshot: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/digitalocean...

InAnEmergency··on Exploit Prevention as a Service for Rails
Definitely running Brakeman, as are https://codeclimate.com/, https://www.pullreview.com and http://rails-brakeman.com/.
InAnEmergency··on Jenkin developers accidentally do "git push --force" to over 150 repos on github
I wonder if it's related to this: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/jenkinsci-dev/-Yk0UFfSPZc/Gz...
InAnEmergency··on Show HN: I suck at remembering names, so I built an app to help
For a long time my friend's last Facebook status was that his dog had died. Really depressing.
InAnEmergency··on Rails' CookieStore isn't broken
It's also mentioned in the security guide: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/security.html#session-storage
InAnEmergency··on The Ph.D.-Industry Gap
Alternatively, they had full funding (even during the summer), focused on research and graduating (so it didn't take them 10 years), and didn't realize they needed to get an internship to be competitive once they graduated.
InAnEmergency··on Humble Indie Bundle 9 released
In case people are still curious, the upload yesterday was missing a bunch of files. There is a new file for download 9/12/2013 which is working fine for me.
InAnEmergency··on Humble Indie Bundle 9 released
Was excited to play Mark of the Ninja on Linux (64-bit) but all I get is a blank screen :'(
InAnEmergency··on 0 A.D., an Open-Source Strategy Game
The latest release appears to have multiplayer enabled.
InAnEmergency··on 0 A.D., an Open-Source Strategy Game
0AD is the most polished, beautiful open source game I have ever played. This campaign is not about building a new game: the game already exists as shown in the video and is even in an enjoyable-to-play state. Definitely check it out if you haven't already (and it's cross-platform!): http://play0ad.com/
InAnEmergency··on Nintendo 2DS
No, you are correct, which makes it confusing that so many people in these comments are saying the 3D screen was the reason they didn't buy the 3DS...

InAnEmergency··on Ruby hacking guide
I suspect it has changed considerably, especially with the change from full interpreter to VM in Ruby 1.9.

Garbage collection has changed from regular mark-and-sweep to lazy sweep to using bitmap marking.

InAnEmergency··on Ubuntu Phone Will Be A Big Success, Even If It Never Happens
Unless I misunderstood the Edge campaign, you can ONLY get it by contributing to the campaign. It won't be available for purchase.
InAnEmergency··on Thoughts on Twitter's new Two-Factor Authentication
Not sure why there are complaints about it only working when the phone is online, since you can generate a backup code offline and use that. Your phone does not need internet access once you have set it up.
InAnEmergency··on Twitter’s New Two-Factor Solution Kicks SMS to the Curb
That person grabbing your phone would also need to know your password, so it's not any worse than not having two factor authentication.
InAnEmergency··on Dwarf Fortress in 2013
That was one of the taglines for SimCity 2000: "If this game were any more realistic, it'd be illegal to turn it off." (http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/198648-simcity-2000/images/box-11...)
InAnEmergency··on Yahoo Mail is not catching up anymore
I had no idea that FastMail wasn't free any more until just now when I thought "why can't you just sign up and see it". I've been using it since 2002, although it hasn't been my primary email for a long time. Crazy.
InAnEmergency··on RethinkDB 1.7: hot backup, atomic set/get, 10x insert performance improvement
For those interested, my insert time for ~250 records (~9.2MB of JSON) went from 340 seconds to 20 seconds.

Unfortunately when migrating from 1.6.2 to 1.7.1 I lost a table (not sure how) and all secondary indexes :(

InAnEmergency··on RethinkDB 1.7: hot backup, atomic set/get, 10x insert performance improvement
This is a really nice update. Migrating data between releases with a giant Ruby script feels like a hack each time there's an update. Insert speed has been a real annoyance. Fetching multiple keys is really nice (instead of map/filter the entire thing). And expanding pluck() to nested documents makes so much sense (I was worried ReQL would be limited to manipulating top-level documents).

Overall, an exciting release. Going to upgrade and see what insert speed is like on my setup.

InAnEmergency··on On the freedom to speak
Isn't this his response to #2?

> In both cases above, I was pointing to a type of technology. The truth or falsity of what I was saying doesn’t depend upon whether Palantir is a good or bad company. About that question, I am not, and don’t purport to be an expert.

InAnEmergency··on Twitter Music App Goes Live Today
Not sure about the app, but on the web interface you can seek inside a track by clicking around the disc image.
InAnEmergency··on Programmer? Back Pain? Try archery
Archery can also mess up your back and shoulders if you do it wrong and/or the draw weight is too much for you. It's also an asymmetric activity, since you use your right and left sides differently.
InAnEmergency··on Rails' Insecure Defaults
Good point, even better.
InAnEmergency··on Rails' Insecure Defaults
When the recent RCE exploits came out, the idea of a bunch of people running Rails dev environments on their laptops on 0.0.0.0:3000 became a lot scarier. Even if an intruder getting into a corporate network and scanning for Rails apps sounds unlikely, there are plenty of opportunities on public networks (e.g. all those Rails hipsters at coffeeshops).
InAnEmergency··on Ruby Demystified: and vs. &&
That seems more confusing, since they evaluate to the same thing.

    1.9.3p392 :001 > true && 1
     => 1
    1.9.3p392 :002 > true and 1
     => 1
    1.9.3p392 :003 > false && 1
     => false
    1.9.3p392 :004 > false and 1
     => false
    1.9.3p392 :005 > nil && 1
     => nil
    1.9.3p392 :006 > nil and 1
     => nil
Which is why explicitly checking for "true" or "false" in a conditional is unusual.
InAnEmergency··on Ruby Demystified: and vs. &&
"&" isn't even the same category, since it is a definable method and its meaning varies with the value on the left hand side.
InAnEmergency··on Ruby Demystified: and vs. &&
I think I may be the last person who still thinks "and/or" are just fine for boolean expressions in Ruby.

It is true that "and/or" are not equivalent to "&&/||". But I don't find any of the arguments that we should then avoid "and/or" in favor of "&&/||" convincing.
