Immortalin··on Building Protocols with HTTP
Building a protocol over HTTP has the added benefit of making security easy. HTTP+TLS has a lot more eyeballs than protocols on lower levels. Most protocols on layer 3 and below weren't designed with security as a priority. If you are building a domain specific protocol, it's a lot easier to build on top of one which already has a good security story backed by a triumvirate of internet unicorns, than trying to re-invent the whole public key dance on a homebrewed setup.
Immortalin··on Launch HN: Optic (YC S18) – Automate Routine Programming
Optic looks amazing, congrats on shipping! Do you think it can be integrated with visual programming languages IDE development? There are a lot of such things in the IoT, industrial and laboratory control, game Dev, media synthesis industries and they all suffer from the limitation of poor coupling between generated code and the front end graphical elements as the type checker and static analysis on the graphical elements level have to match the syntactic rules of the language constructs.

We use it for algorithmic trading here at KloudTrader and this is an issue we suffers from. Looking forward to adding Optic to our CI pipeline.

Business rules engines would be another really great application. For a lot of IFTTT type of applications, if the rules can be compiled into finite state machines instead of simply interpreted, that would be a great boost for productivity and efficiency!

Immortalin··on Ask HN: Old CS lecturer looking for advice from current and recent students
If you can explain how different textbook scenarios are from real life that would be great. E.g. why linked list are not often used due to cache misses, what's the advantage of one DB brand over the other etc. Even though manufacturer-dependent knowledge is not as useful general purpose theoretical CS, it's still pretty important as ultimately that's what you will be working with in the real world.

Immortalin··on Ask HN: What are the things that you have automated in your personal life?
Indeed, everytime the server goes down (every other week), I have to SSH in and trawl through all the amassed epubs...:D

(The files persist until the conversion is fully complete i.e.uploaded to S3 and sent to user)

Immortalin··on Ask HN: What are the things that you have automated in your personal life?
It uses AMZN Polly for the backend, switching to Wavenet types would cause an 4x price increase (based on current offerings by the majors clouds). It is a bit difficult to justify because that would exceed the cost of an off-the-shelf audiobook from e.g. Audible. I do however plan to add it as an option.

If you have any ideas etc. drop me an email! (See profile)

Algorithmic trading, if you are good at both the finance bit and the software bit. Caveat Emptor.
Immortalin··on Mozilla Announces $225,000 for Art and Advocacy Exploring A.I.
Unlike at GOOG, MSFT, AAPL, Firefox isn't a loss leader or cost for Mozilla that can be subsidized by other products. Before criticizing their finances, go find an organisation that can afford to even build and maintain a full-fledge cross-platform browser with mobile support for less than that. Browsers are not simple things. You have to create an entire ecosystem of software and development tools to go along with it as well as maintaining full legacy support. Most software of similar complexity are all built by organisations with deep pockets.
Immortalin··on Mozilla Announces $225,000 for Art and Advocacy Exploring A.I.
Browser engineers aren't exactly cheap. 250k for a good C++ Dev is reasonable. Assuming 100 engineers (a very conservative estimate), that's 25 million in just pay alone. 50 million including codec. Now add in the costs of infrastructure, community engagement, DevOps, Marketing etc. and the costs will quickly balloon. Browsers are critical infrastructure like operating systems. Their complexity is on the same level as OSes, perhaps even more. It's exposed to hostile code everyday, you don't want people who don't know what they are doing to work on it. This isn't some sort of dating app where the only vulnerability you have to worry about is a code injection in the birthday form field.

I predict this will be a non-issue within 5 years due to 3D printing.
Immortalin··on Inside Firefox’s DNS-over-HTTPS engine
It's easier than ever to host a server transparently for end user software. You don't hear users complaining about node.js running in most Electron apps. A http server for DNS can easily be compiled to binary and ran like any other system daemon.
