Illotus··on Microsoft to support Windows 11 on M1 and M2 Macs through Parallels partnership
Because settings related stuff is needed so rarely.
Illotus··on Microsoft to support Windows 11 on M1 and M2 Macs through Parallels partnership
Wsl really did make Windows better developer platform than Mac. I'd still prefer straight up Linux, but that is not possible in all organizations.
Illotus··on Microsoft to support Windows 11 on M1 and M2 Macs through Parallels partnership
Yeah, this is very unfortunate development. It is really tough to find good mobile first games that aren't infested with grind or micro transactions.

Docker has much better IO perf with lot of small files on WSL vs Mac. Currently doing Rails development and had to revert to running local straight up on Mac vs Docker because on Docker it was extremely slow. This of course means more testing on prod like cloud envs so it is really a load of crap.
Illotus··on Icons: Avoid temptation and start with user needs
Back when I read the usability literature on icons about 10 years ago, the consensus was pretty much that text was pretty much the best, icon and text was worse and only icons was really bad.

Anything that looks like an ad will be largely ignored. This has been understood for over 20 years now. However, flashy looking boxes have always been the first idea that pops into anyones head, so here we are.
Illotus··on Wage Stagnation
Self checkout at as implemented in local shops has odd value proposition for the shopper. Basically it is more hassle and marginally faster for the benefit of allowing the shop owner to fire some people. Compare this to handling bank transfer at your own home computer or mobile phone versus going to the bank during business hours.
Illotus··on Wage Stagnation
Indeed, the collective bargaining power of employees is less than it used to be. This will likely become more and more an issue in the current century as the benefits of automation will line mostly the pockets of the owning class. The current concept of fairness of pay and trust in market forces is evident in these comments as well. I think at some point there needs to be some adjustment there. Maybe that will happen before the middle class disappears completely.
Illotus··on Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index – 2019 edition
Don't know about Spain, but in some countries privatization means basically that functions that used to be handled by government employees or such are now handled by private enterprises, however the money still comes from public expenditure. The idea is that private enterprises are so much more efficient than government that they can do the same job cheaper while making profit at the same time. Not many success stories for the public in those cases.
Illotus··on Paul Graham on the Transition to Meat Substitutes
With reindeers it is probably highly dependent on region. For example in Lapland of Finland there are way too many reindeers than the environment can support, so they are largely kept in pens during winter and fed protein feed, hay, collected lichen, dried feafy branches etc.

Plus Finland produces about 2 million kilos of reindeer meat per year, so it is really miniscule part of the diet.

Illotus··on New Dell XPS 13 developer edition now available
> I'd be very interested how well dell notebooks last - do they have similar 'design flaws' as the current gen Apple notebooks (keyboard, display cable)

I have 9360, it has pretty annoying coil whine. The touchpad has some play which is extremely annoying, for almost a year I always used a trackball instead. Now I've gotten used to it somewhat, but still it irks me every day when I have to use it. Headset port stopped recognizing dedicated microphones at some point, probably some driver/software problem on the Windows side.

For work it is okay and I chose it basically because the Macbook Pros of the time already had the horrible keyboards and touchbar. In retrospect I should have gone with Lenovo, at least their keyboards are much better and they have actual docks, which are very convenient for work. Touchpads are still crap, though they may have improved since T440s.

Compared to the late 2013 Macbook Pro I have the MBP has better hardware, but I prefer Windows and Linux to OSX.

Basically it was a political decision to not continue. Researchers would have liked to continue with more resources: https://translate.google.fi/translate?sl=fi&tl=en&js=y&prev=...

Illotus··on What Did Ancient Romans Do Without Toilet Paper?
Paper towels are much more sanitary. Big part of washing hands is wiping the bacteria and viruses along with water into something. Drying just gets the water, leaves everything else.
Illotus··on CES Was Full of Useless Robots and Machines That Don’t Work
Very nearly every home in Finland has one these still.
Illotus··on Fewer toys at once may help toddlers to focus better and play more creatively
Boxes, random pieces of paper and cardboard frames left after punching out board game chits are all very used toys for my daughter.
Illotus··on Apple Agrees to Deal with Ireland Over $15B Unpaid Tax Issue
Except it is not a legit deal, because Ireland isn't offering it to all companies.
Illotus··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
What? Working 8 hours a day leaves about 8 hours of freetime to spend with your kids even leaving 8 hours for sleep. Even if you change the numbers there is plenty of time to spent, it is just matter of prioritizing.
Illotus··on What you should know as a founder of a software company
Sorta, it does save bandwitdth, but more importantly it is used to keep users on your site longer by removing the decision point of browsing to the next page. Though for the best effect you need to do it background so that user never really realises that the feed/list never really ends.
Illotus··on Problems with MacBook butterfly switch keyboards
Don Norman may be over 80, but not dead I think ;)
Illotus··on Uncle Bob and Silver Bullets
Banking on discipline in any human endeavour seems to be fool's errand. You will get more reliable results by improving the environment, systems and tools. This can be seen in how much checklists have improved the quality and reliability in fields like medicine. We are in a field where we can literally codify the checklists to enforce them.
Illotus··on Software Engineering ≠ Computer Science (2009)
In general there may not be that much novelty per project, but that isn't the novelty that one needs to worry about in software projects. The relevant novelty is the novelty to the project team. Also lot of the novelty comes not from the technical side, but domain and organization that will be using the software.
Illotus··on European Commission fines Google €2.42B for abusing dominance
Unrestricted capitalism will just converge to one single corporation.
Illotus··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
Back in university days I often wrote assignments while tipsy and then edited them when sober. Cider was just perfect for silencing the inner critic to get some thoughts to paper.
Illotus··on GitLab’s Secret to Managing Employees in 160 Locations: Write Everything Down
Usually the modifying of behaviour in these cases just means writing down stuff more, which is usually beneficial to everyone.

On another note, having remote employees without supporting that type of working company wide is just silly squandering of resources. Sadly that is fairly common anyways.

Illotus··on There Are Three Programming Paradigms (2013)
Yes, it oddly took around 20 seconds to show what to all appearances is just text. Sort of hilarious after the yesterdays danluu web bloat article.
Illotus··on Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. (2007)
> Diets are not just about nutrition, that's one of the biggest misconceptions. Psychology and physical activities play equally, if not more important role in dieting.

This. With the addition that psychology is hugely affected human bodys tendency to defend agains weight loss. One good recent paper on the subject how much weight loss increased hunger: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.21653/abstrac...

Illotus··on Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. (2007)
Not much benefit in reading old stuff like that. Some of it has been validated, some not. Insulin as the great cause for fat gain hasn't really panned out. On the other hand now we've had some large studies that give an inkling that eating a lot of fat can be healthy for the heart and on the other hand replacing saturated fats with carbs(instead of unsaturated fats) is basically status quo.
Illotus··on Flat Pack Chainless Bicycle from IKEA
I think coaster is fine as backup, but front brake should always be the primary brake as the braking distance using it is much much shorter.
Illotus··on Flat Pack Chainless Bicycle from IKEA
It is incredibly cheap for a belt drive. I've no idea if things have changed in the last couple of years, but I think cheapest I found in 2014 was around 1000€ in Europe.
