IlikeKitties··on I can build enterprise software but I can't charge for it
> can't monetize this from Iran: > Stripe, PayPal, Western payment processors (sanctioned) > AWS, GCP, Azure (sanctioned) > Western bank account (sanctioned) > Credit card payments from customers (no processor works here)

Good. That's the whole point of economic sanctions.

IlikeKitties··on The 'Toy Story' You Remember
There's multiple versions of the Matrix on the trackers and the internet that I know of. The official release all look kinda different to each other:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mhZ-13HqLQ

There's a 35mm scan floating around from a faded copy with really weird colors sometimes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow1KDYc9XsE

And there's an Open Matte Version, which I don't know the Origin of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2eCmhBgsyI

For me, it's the Open Matte that I consider the ultimate best version.

IlikeKitties··on Reminder to passengers ahead of move to 100% digital boarding passes
A printed PDF doesn't sell your data for profit. An App does.
IlikeKitties··on Reminder to passengers ahead of move to 100% digital boarding passes
If you live in the EU, the euID app that's coming in the next few years will use the google play integrity API. It's all but inevitable.
IlikeKitties··on Reminder to passengers ahead of move to 100% digital boarding passes
Than you haven't been watching the EU enough. They are currently working on MULTIPLE different omnibus laws that will make owning an Google or Apple Approved Phone, running Google or Apple Approved Firmware and using the Google or Apple App store de-facto mandatory for living in the EU.

You vill download ze app and you vill accept the TOS.

IlikeKitties··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
You sir are misjudging me and the effort I put into not only protecting myself but also other from this overreach and intrusion into the life and privacy of myself and others.

But the comment above me argued "Companies should put their customer's well being before profits" which as a general statement may VERY well fall under my argument.

The reality is that i believe shareholder value optimization and unregulated capitalism is the problem.

IlikeKitties··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
> Caution, incoming naive statement: Companies should put their customer's well being before profits, because we all know most people don't understand what's going on with their digital devises.

This might be illegal for publicly traded companies. Shareholder maximization forces them to deceive their customers.

Normies buy this stuff. You misjudge how much normies do not care.
IlikeKitties··on Mullvad: Shutting down our search proxy Leta
If you want good search results, open up a tor browser and use yandex.ru. The difference in search result quality is eye-opening.

Still hope Russia looks like Berlin in '45 soon but until then, you can't deny they got the better search engine.

IlikeKitties··on Reverse engineering a neural network's clever solution to binary addition (2023)
>As I mentioned, before, I had imagined the network learning some fancy combination of logic gates to perform the whole addition process digitally, similarly to how a binary adder operates. This trick is yet another example of neural networks finding unexpected ways to solve problems.

My intuition is that this solution allows for some form of gradient approach to a solution, which is why it's unintuitive. We think about solutions as all or nothing and look for complete solutions.

Do not switch to Vodafone. Even without their peering it's still a horrible ISP
IlikeKitties··on Denmark's government aims to ban access to social media for children under 15
And the reference implementation requires google play integrity attestation so you are forced to use a google approved device with google approved firmware and a google account to download the application in order to participate. Once this becomes implemented, you are no longer a citizen of the EU but a citizen of Google or Apple and a customer of the EU:
IlikeKitties··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
Sadly you'll see from his other responses that thinking is the thing he doesn't
IlikeKitties··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
> This doesn't prove it's aliens. It does add to my mass-hysteria hypothesis

You don't notice it do you? Re-read again what I wrote. At no point did I argue that it's aliens. Intentionally.

You first point was proven wrong instantly "it's only an USA Phenomenon". You don't bother to research anything but stick with your hypothesis. You don't even go look for evidence yet are utterly convinced of the result of your complete lack of research.

Here's an example of metal alloy that's supposed to come from an UFO and shows an interesting composition we cannot replicate. It's a well known artefact:

https://tothestars.media/de-de/blogs/press-and-news/tts-anal...

It had some analysis done by different researchers https://www.researchgate.net/publication/237233241_Compositi...

Your lack of curiosity is still very obvious.

IlikeKitties··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
> Everything is aliens and a government cover up to those folks....even when you prove it's a floating trash bag they think you're a fool.

That's a pretty annoying sampling bias and doesn't reflect the community as a whole. There's plenty of rational voices that think most things are just balloons and drones, but they don't comment when it's boring and mundane. In those cases, only schizo voices remain.

IlikeKitties··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
>I've always wondered why UFOs are only a USA phenomenon

It plain isn't and to claim that it is shows that you have done EXACTLY 0 research into the topic. This kind of bad faith engagement shows an utter lack of curiosity.

UFOs are huge in South America within just seconds you can find hundreds of sightings and discussions about them:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varginha_UFO_incident

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_sightings_in_Brazil

https://www.vice.com/en/article/i-went-alien-hunting-on-chil...

Ufos are also a thing above Europe with the Belgian Ufo wave and the Rendlesham Forest incident being well known and seminal cases in UFO Lore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendlesham_Forest_incident

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_UFO_wave

Africa also had for example the ariel school incident in Zimbabwe, one of the most well known UFO cases ever

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariel_School_UFO_incident

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_sightings_in_Africa

Same goes for russia where after the cold war ufo sightings were discussed in offically declassified documents:

https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/DOC_0005517761.pdf

Must I go on or is that enough to accept that "UNKNOWN THING IN SKY DOES WEIRD THING I DON'T UNDERSTAND" is pretty much a global phenomenon that can and should be scientifically investigated just the same as we would investigate everything else we find anomalous?

IlikeKitties··on Is Software the UFOlogy of Engineering Disciplines?
This is as much about UFOlogy as it's about SE. But there's also Science in Ufology, for example statistical analysis of reported UFO sightings or video analysis of UFO Videos. I think this applies to software engineering as well.

Here's an example I found enlightening: It's about the HTTP3& the QUIC protocol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rYPXgCKamM So much real engineering went into that, from fossilized infrastructure that doesn't allow certain ipv6 extension headers, to assumptions about the great firewall of china and it's inner workings and more.

IlikeKitties··on A theoretical way to circumvent Android developer verification
>That looks like someone made a list of mostly features specific to GrapheneOS so they could make a chart where all of the other alternatives (including stock Android) are full of red boxes.

No one else even bothered to make a list.

>Several of those are the opposite of security features, like SafetyNet support, which might be a convenience in some cases but it mostly makes it so you can't upgrade certain parts of the system to newer versions even when the old versions have security vulnerabilities.

IlikeKitties··on A theoretical way to circumvent Android developer verification
I must sadly inform everyone here that the EU is pozzed beyond recovery in regards to Google. The reference implementation for the euid project is only available for android and ios and uses the play integrity api which makes usage of it on non google-certified devices impossible. https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/eudi-app-andro...
IlikeKitties··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
I'm glad you were able to use these tools to help your family though such tough times!

> The hopeful part of me is that many others can use similar techniques to win.

And the realistic part in me says that these tools will be used to deny appeals without a human ever looking into them and making sure you will never get to talk to a human or get approval for anything ever again.

IlikeKitties··on Tor Browser 15.0
How do you scan for hidden services? I thought that was impossible?

Anyway, please beware that there is a not-insignificant propability that opening random tor hidden addresses lead to thinks you don't want to see like gore and CSAM.

IlikeKitties··on Tor Browser 15.0
> my belief (without proof) is that in a world of big data, we're all likely on some sort of govt database with a note about what we do or dont do but as a privacy enthusiast I'll continue making it as difficult as possible for anyone to syphon off my data easily and for free.

Almost certainly true! Clearview AI is being sued because they scraped the internet for all our faces. Ever posted a picture of yourself attached with your name ANYWHERE, EVER? You are now in the database. I realized that a talk i held at a software conference was posted on the internet and that meant that of course i'm now forever in all AI Databases anywhere.

There's a reason the NSA build yottabytes of storage for metdata and connections: Save now, decrypt later when Quantum Computers are ready. Every App, website, even your OS is spying on you. Ever google "Tor" or "Tails OS"? Congrats you are now in the NSAs Database as a potential extremist[0]

That being said: The least we can do is make surveilance more expensive. Use Tor, throwaway browser sessions, encrypted cloud storage etc. Your average normie is an open book with everything readable in the cleartext.

> I've never torrented anything and have been wary that doing anything with the Tor project on my not-so-private computer just sends up a beacon asking me to be investigated. I don't do anything illegal or plan to, but being investigated alone is enough of a deterrent.

Tor is not illegal. Usage of Tor is not illegal. If you have such fears you are either unreasonably paranoid in this regard or you are correct in your fears and you are already living in a totalitarian surveillance state that uses fear and intimidation to deny you your rights and freedoms.

I live in Germany and torrent all day (with a VPN), use tor all day and shitpost on the internet as much as time permits. I will not yield in that regard and neither should you.

> 1. If you're threat model is surveillance state, are things like this helpful or harmful?

It depends. The most useful usage for tor is to work around blocks and nation state firewalls. My traffic almost universally exits in Germany or the Netherlands where you can access any website you want from. If you life in china you might not be able to visit all the sites you want, i.e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests...

> 2. If you need a tool like this, what's the best way to obtain/install this anonymously? Depends: Do you have access to some form of internet connection thats not directly linked to your identity? Because downloading and using tor from your home connection if you are worried about "sending a beacon" really is pointless. A public wifi is propably the easiest way to get it.
