IYasha··on Tell HN: Cloudflare verification is breaking the internet
yeah, same here. ( for example, I can't access forum.xda-developers.com anymore.
IYasha··on Tell HN: Cloudflare verification is breaking the internet
In my experience, if bots start flooding a server, it's the ISP/hosting provider that gets angry and contacts the owner first. )
IYasha··on Tell HN: Cloudflare verification is breaking the internet
The page sometimes keeps refreshing literally forever. Completely ignoring my unconfirmed "Allow this page to reload?" prompt. I left it "checking" for hours once. No luck.

Website owhers usually don't realise that some "nicely advertised tech" they're ticking "to protect my poor website from evil hackers" is a damn grenade launcher in an infant's hands. Ironically, they're also shooting themselves in the feet by blocking their own customers.
IYasha··on Tell HN: Cloudflare verification is breaking the internet
There are many less inhumane ways of treating clients than CF does. Just because you needed them to protect your host doesn't justify their abuse of power.

It's been breaking by life.

IYasha··on Smartphones with Qualcomm chip secretly send personal data to Qualcomm
Literally hours after your post I'm reading this: Founder of GrapheneOS Daniel Micay hit with a Swatting Attempt https://nitter.takebackourtech.org/i/status/1650947535500898...

Also, it doesn't have to be USB on devices with 3.5 4-pin jack.

And such people are ridiculed in the news.
IYasha··on The Andy Warhol Copyright Case That Could Transform Generative AI
I really like how you put it. Good thought! But I don't quite agree that entropy is a criteria of originality. Because originality is not ranodmness, it's... distinctiveness.
IYasha··on Delphi 11 and C++Builder 11 Community Editions Released

Builder 7 was getting there too :)

IYasha··on Delphi 11 and C++Builder 11 Community Editions Released
To be fair, C++ was never their primary focus. Everything from Borland was Pascal-oriented, even C++ Builder's GUI and components were Delphi-based. Quality of Builder vs. Delphi was worse, compiler performance too. Visual Studio 6 started beating Builder in every aspect except ease of GUI design.
IYasha··on Brazil judge orders temporary suspension of Telegram
Maaan, don't you see? This was a controlled move: hook up people to a social network, pretend to clumsily ban it (while also testing and upgrading ISP abilities to do it), control reaction, pretend to unban it (oh, we do what peoples asked! we care! we not baddies! we cool!)

While in the same reality aggressively fight TOR, block VPNs, enforce passport registration, etc. etc. There's even a man jailed for running a tor node!

IYasha··on Brazil judge orders temporary suspension of Telegram
E2E is not available on all platforms, is hidden in obscure menus and the whole UI discourages users from using it. Telegram is a data-harvesting social goolag-oriented network after all. :-/
IYasha··on Brazil judge orders temporary suspension of Telegram
Pretty much the same in my country. And, as I've heard, there was surprisingly non-zero number of "invalid" requests.
IYasha··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
As a non-american (and from far-far-away) I still sympathise with people who stand against it. Because it's fairly clear to me: if it starts there, it spreads everywhere. That's more of a WEF thing.
IYasha··on Editors quit top neuroscience journal to protest against open-access charges
> fee at Nature Neuroscience, published by Springer Nature, is $11,690 WHAT!? That's our f** average annual income! No wonder independent science is in such weak and obscure state :(

Is it just my Linux, or the site is THAT bad?

IYasha··on Why are ethernet jumbo frames 9000 bytes? (2018)
Can you share a bit more detail regarding overall network performance before and after deploying jumbo frames in your DC?
IYasha··on Why are ethernet jumbo frames 9000 bytes? (2018)
For me it was network going down after maximizing SSH console window :D
IYasha··on Why are ethernet jumbo frames 9000 bytes? (2018)
Absolutely. JF adoption is very poor and packet dropping is a (frustrating) thing. To be compatible, DCs need to invest in really powerful border/backbone routers (and their configuration) for fast enough packet splitting.

PS: Even at CERN, where cooperation is supposedly tighter, JFs were only an experiment, and, AFAIR, not a very successful one.

IYasha··on Why are ethernet jumbo frames 9000 bytes? (2018)
Also, these problems are hard to debug. Oh, and don't ask me what happens if someone crams in a small dumb noname switch in the net...
IYasha··on Why are ethernet jumbo frames 9000 bytes? (2018)
Oh, yeah, don't get me started... It is SO damn freaking annoyinggly hard to set up a common packet size for all my devices! Completely ridiculous! For example, I have NAS-to-Switch 10G fiber that supports > 9000, switch-to-clients 10G fiber and 1G copper, and every damn machine has different NIC with not only different frame caps (some 4K, some 8K, some 9K, others unknown), but they represent different numbers!! For example, Intel vs Mellanox accept byte numbers with and without headers (don't remember which is which) - try guessing! That's in Windows, of course. Where vendors design their UIs/configs.
IYasha··on Why the brain’s connections to the body are crisscrossed
Because no auto MDI/MDIX, right? (posted before reading :) )
IYasha··on HDD Sales Crater, Drop 35% Year-over-Year
Someone please save HDDs! They're awesome!

Coincidentally, only few hours ago my SSD was saved by HDD! I booted up my PC and went away for a few minutes. Returned only to be welcomed by busy HDD noises. I quickly turned by WTF into resource monitor - and (not)surprise! - PID 4 was munching D:\System Volume Information. That's really annoying, but what really terrified me - the same was happening to SSD C:! I have explicitly turned off defrag, updates and other stuff for it, but still. And I would never spot it because SSDS DON'T MAKE NOISE!!

May. This is by far two most hilarious bytes I ever heard! :D :D :D

(linux user): isn't Powershell that new slow as hell command prompt based on some .NET? No, thanks. It's just terrible as everything made of .NET.
