ISNIT··on Ask HN: Any advise for portfolio projects?
I find the best way to build a portfolio is to attend local hackathons. They're great not only because you will build a whole project in 2 days, but you get to learn from professionals, make contacts, and possibly meet someone who's hiring. Also, meetups (meetup.com) are a great way to meet local people who might be hiring or know of companies that are.
ISNIT··on Ask HN: is there a cross-device calendar with tasks outside of Outlook and iOS?
If you want something highly customizable, you should checkout EMACS Org Mode http://orgmode.org/ (a major mode in EMACS). There are various integrations between it and other TODO + calendar apps.

An example of org to google calendar: http://orgmode.org/worg/org-tutorials/org-google-sync.html

ISNIT··on Music for programming :)
Such a shame this didn't get more upvotes, it's amazing!
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
Unfortunately, the BBC is extremely biased. Far worse than it used to be. Probably best to read from other inversely biased sources too :)
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
On a similar note, those who want to leave if the UK stays should know that Switzerland is one of the last democracies in Europe. (They also have nice watches and an amazing quality of life)
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
As far as I can tell, the main argument is about democracy vs un-elected individuals.
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Where to go after Brexit
https://nomadforum.io/ is a good place to ask similar questions.

https://nomadlist.com/ is a great way to filter and search different countries and cities by various criterion.

I personally think that the UK leaving the EU would make it more democratic and, in the long run, a better place to live than many EU countries which are governed by un-elected individuals.

ISNIT··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2016)
UK, Marlow | Full-time | Onsite only http://squaredup.com

Squared Up was founded with the vision of using cutting-edge data visualisation to solve the challenges of Enterprise IT complexity and, from humble beginnings, we are loved by some of the world’s leading companies and growing fast.

We’re a genuine start-up, which means that there are no old grey men in suits telling us what to do; we’re driven by ambitious software engineering goals, not by the demands of sales teams and investors, and are passionate about building an awesome company together.

We’re based in the picturesque town of Marlow, a beautiful spot on the River Thames between Maidenhead and Reading, where you’ll be joining a young, dynamic, energetic team. Don’t worry if you’re not already local to us, if you’re the right fit for Squared Up, then we’ll help you relocate.

If this sounds of interested drop us a line at brilliantcareers[at]squaredup.com

You’ll head to community events to keep up to date with the latest tech trends, get face-to-face with customers at our regular customer workshops, or travel to the world's largest technology conferences to help spread the word about the amazing product you've helped build - all at the company’s expense. And, of course, being treated to some amazing company social events like Secret Cinema.

Skills & Requirements:

• You must have experience with JavaScript or ASP.NET MVC or both. If you only have experience with one, you’re willing to roll your sleeves up and get stuck into the other.

• You put the needs of the user first and have a passion for delivering clean, intuitive UI.

• You have a keen interest in data visualisation: you’ve dabbled with d3.js, devoured Edward Tufte’s book series or can wax lyrical about Bret Victor’s Magic Ink essay.

• If you’re a JavaScript guru, you’ve been hands-on with mustache templates and reactive libraries like Ractive.js. Or you’re an Angular.js veteran who’s looking for a fresh start.

• You probably have some experience with the Microsoft stack and related technologies: Azure, SQL, IIS, ASP.NET, HyperV, VMWare, Active Directory etc. Again, if you don’t already have the experience, you’re willing to give it a shot.

ISNIT··on Ask HN: What are good tech conferences in UK?
Render-Conf is looking to be good: http://2016.render-conf.com/ It replaces jQueryUK which was great last year.
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Which people and groups are researching new approaches to programming?
Chris Granger seems to be doing some awesome work with 'Eve': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V1ynVyud4M
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Bad software or bad hardware, the choice is yours
I have a Macbook Air with Arch Linux on - Love it. The hardware runs well (for the most part) and the software is getting to be more supported by the Arch Team.

I really enjoy my current set up, even though it took a while to get here!

ISNIT··on Actually launching
I did have a look, unfortunately it was one of the many different 'Starting a Start-up' posts.
ISNIT··on Actually launching
I have the exact same issue with my projects, but recently I read something which seems to have helped over the last few weeks;

"Never got to bed satisfied."

It means, don't stay up all night fixing that issue, leave it till the next day when you will really want to start fixing the issue.

It seems to be a great way to maintain focus and motivation.

ISNIT··on Ask HN: Readers of HN: Where are you right now?
UK
ISNIT··on Should I use delegated or native comments for my niche community site?
I would make your own one. Worst case is you learn from making it, then switch over to another commenting system.

I think that making one will also give you more of an insight into how the delegated ones work - that can't be a bad thing!

ISNIT··on Share your cv
A good place to start is here: https://jsonresume.org/

Provides a great structure and there are tons of templates which you can choose and customize easily.

ISNIT··on Ask HN: Hackathon project: Show skill or work on a simple project that I like?
There will always be at least one thing that was more complex than expected.

Even finishing a project looks good to employers.

This post explains that even adding a word counter can be complex. http://blog.intercom.io/there-are-no-small-changes/

"Do we crop the string, or display an error message to the user? If we display an error, where does it appear? What does it say? Who is going to write the error message? How do we explain to the user why we’re limiting them to 140 characters? How will these errors look? Do we have a style defined? If not, who is designing it?"

ISNIT··on Ask HN: Web app to store user's profiles
Meteor is based on Node, and is reactive with sweet plugins for accounts and database stuff. I can imagine the default templating engine would be helpful for your task too.

Check out Meteor: https://www.meteor.com/

Super easy, Super fast and all JavaScript.

ISNIT··on Ask HN: What should i answer to a question about salary?
My first job (when I was 16) was as a software developer for a start-up in London. I was asked, panicked and said £25k. He seemed totally okay with it.

I guess it depends on the company/person employing you, along with how persuasive you can be :).

Probably not, as that is the screen that users will spend the least amount of time on! :)
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Why do coders don't like attending meetings?
To illustrate my point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKorP55Aqvg
ISNIT··on Ask HN: Why do coders don't like attending meetings?
I personally think it depends on who the meeting is with. I love having meetings with start up companies, because they get it... But in my experience, managers in more corporate settings suck and don't understand things, that is amplified in the meetings.
ISNIT··on Show HN: Gunoki – Trainyard-and-2048-inspired Puzzle Game for iOS and Android
My first thought is that the first screenshot should be of the game. Not had a chance to play it yet!
ISNIT··on Ask HN: What are some clever Slack hacks/integrations?
Yea, actually... That could work. Or using the (Albeit buggy) Spotify web client, to trigger button presses. That would then work really well with the other APIs.
ISNIT··on Ask HN: What are some clever Slack hacks/integrations?
Having had a look, I couldn't see any easy way to do that with the Web API. But I think it would be awesome to allow voting for adding or removing songs to the que.
