IBCNU··on Procrastination Has Nothing to Do with Self-Control
I know he's not for everyone but Nassim Taleb's quote is salient - “Few understand that procrastination is our natural defense, letting things take care of themselves and exercise their antifragility; it results from some ecological or naturalistic wisdom, and is not always bad -- at an existential level, it is my body rebelling against its entrapment. It is my soul fighting the Procrustean bed of modernity.”
IBCNU··on Extramaze: Using Racket, PostgreSQL, AWS, but no ads or JavaScript (2018)
Greg made CakeWalk, one of the first and best music programs of it's day.
IBCNU··on Soup – Alan Kay on Objects
"For a variety of reasons — none of them very good — this way of being safe lost out in the 60s in favor of allowing race conditions in imperative programming and then trying to protect against them using terrible semaphores, etc which can lead to lock ups." - it would be great for you to lay those out! Also please tell us other Krautrock songs you dig!
IBCNU··on Self-Driving Cars Can Handle Neither Rain nor Sleet nor Snow
It's pretty funny how we're running into AI-winter at the same time the autonomous vehicle VC boom is moving all their money to scooters.
IBCNU··on Ask HN: Were you happy moving your API from REST to GraphQL?
Not at all (we rolled our own back end). The added complexity of building queries to join our API ended up creating such a quagmire of SQL that any dev coming in will basically have to learn our own custom ORM.
IBCNU··on Show HN: Clothes shopping app UI built in React Native
I used Redux when it first came out, but now use Mobx as it's just... easier and has less boilerplate. Also it's easy to extend into a reframe-like pure function state management system if you want to avoid passing around objects/inheritance.
IBCNU··on A Clojure learning journey
https://github.com/plexus/chestnut is Clojurescript, but it's fantastic. It's quite easy to roll out a UI and you can build your backend to your specifications. A bit less opinionated than Luminus, but both great for just getting started.
IBCNU··on 2003 Request of Afghanistan for Redelegation of the .af Top-Level Domain
My band did this, Hujo, our website is http://www.hujo.af cause... well... we are Hujo as f$3k...
IBCNU··on Ask HN: Who's using Clojure, and to do what?
We use clojure on the backend and clojurescript as our admin ui across our supply chain exchange at https://www.openmarketshealth.com
IBCNU··on Ask HN: Who's using Clojure, and to do what?
Any links to your music?
IBCNU··on Argonne researchers posit way to locally circumvent Second Law of Thermodynamics
Is not the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics always circumvented on Earth? We absorb more energy in the form of light from the sun than we emit.
IBCNU··on Feynman's Letter to His Wife
Sitting in my office - crying.
IBCNU··on Kubernetes is going to support rkt
Thanks, right on. It's a huge organization - I think small potatoes like my dev shoppe need to be wary of just doubling down 'because Google.' Angular was hopefully an outlier! Looking forward to seeing how Kubernetes evolves.
IBCNU··on Kubernetes is going to support rkt
Before I get down-voted to oblivion, apologies for snark but I think I'm making a valid point. A lot of engineer's decided to throw in with AngularJS because of Google's "considerable weight" but as we're seeing now, we're all getting burned. It's a fine technology but the pain points have been severe. My point being just because Google backs a technology doesn't mean it's going to be useful, and should instead be based on its merits.
IBCNU··on Kubernetes is going to support rkt
Headline: Google backs alternative to AngularJS, the web's Last Next Big Thing. Google reveals the entire AngularJS project is a ruse designed to ruin countless weekends of aspiring web dev's! No backward compatibility, no human-readable documentation and no implementation of their own technology in their own core product line! In fact, Google states, AngularJS is their first experiment with using their "considerable weight" to trick engineers into learning a technology which is completely useless and unsupported in the long run.

IBCNU··on The Unix System: Making Computers Easier to Use (1982) [video]
OG Greybeards omg so hot
IBCNU··on JSON Web Tokens
Alternatively + [IMHO] more robust security-wise (although both great projects): https://github.com/lynndylanhurley/ng-token-auth
IBCNU··on Using Google Earth to Find an ISIS Training Camp
Nice work.
IBCNU··on The New Haskell Homepage
sexy
IBCNU··on Bootstrap theme to make sites look like they're from the 80s
This is awesome.
IBCNU··on AngularJS application starter comparison
You know that's a good question.

I've spent about half of my work day today working out npm dependency conflicts... The Einstein quote about insanity comes to mind.

IBCNU··on AngularJS application starter comparison
Here's our generator we build just to suit our needs: https://github.com/lynndylanhurley/generator-gulp-of-drano it's come in pretty handy as we have to roll out several apps at a time with (in general) the same dependencies.
IBCNU··on AngularJS application starter comparison
I guess I'm complaining about npm more than Angular per se. Most of our issues stem from the myriad package dependencies "in the wild" of npm itself. It's like tilling a field in the wind. Often one has to `npm install` >3 times to install all of your modules. I guess that's what happens when you have ten billion cooks in the kitchen.
IBCNU··on AngularJS application starter comparison
Dude setting up an angular project can be a huge headache. We use a hand built generator just for our needs, but npm in so insanely unstable that we have to get in and end up doing a lot of configuring of the gulp / gruntfile and packages etc.
IBCNU··on Rap Genius Co-Founder Moghadam Fired
The takedown on Heroku's dyno scaling was impressive. But also funny how they got themselves in that situation to begin with. If there's one thing about this world, RAP music will pay for $20k worth of Dyno's a month! Sad sad world.

edit - I like rap music.

IBCNU··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
Oh, it basically proves that computers can't think!
IBCNU··on Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid
This book changed my life in High School. I eventually worked out Gödel's theorem. I felt good. I've forgotten it now, it's hard.
IBCNU··on One-electron universe
I had to turn my lurker-cloak shield off and tip my hat to you my friend I have never heard of this! I remember my Quantum teacher introducing the concept of a one electron universe, and at the time it sounded like some 19th century type explaining that glass is a liquid, but this, my dear God... this is amazing.
IBCNU··on General Alexander wearing EFF shirt
Probably because he's the most powerful person on the planet wearing a t-shirt which signals that he stands for the very value's most assume he disregards?
