HumblyTossed··on Apple Watch Series 12
> ... and I believe some of the Apple Intelligence features will be backported anyways

Will it? Because they kind of made it a point, like they typically do, to say features are only possible due to the new chip.

So... robots build shit that the wealthy who own the robots can profit from it and I need to ... what? ... go grow my own potatoes if I want to live?

Okay...

Look around? It's rape and pillage time for corporations.
HumblyTossed··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
> I think waaay more people struggle with this than HN would have you believe.

I'm sure we all know. I mean, just ask anyone to write a story and break it into small tasks that can each be accomplished completely in a day.

> Now, software is cheaper and so people who couldn't afford to answer questions they've long wondered about can afford to answer them.

Temporarily. Token price will rise sharply when the bills finally come due.

HumblyTossed··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
> there will be infinite abundance

Maybe.

> nobody will need to work anymore

If we define "nobody" as very wealthy people who partake in that abundance while everyone else ... goes away.

HumblyTossed··on Initial effects of AI technology on employment look positive
> If we tax the proceeds of AI generated productivity sufficiently

That's not going to happen.

Got mine in 85. Still have it in it's (now tattered) box in the garage. It's non-functioning, but can't seem to let go.
HumblyTossed··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Apple, a 4T USD company, is not caught off guard. They know exactly how many of a certain thing they make will sell. This is just PR nonsense. They do it with iPhone also. They'll introduce a new model and make enough to sell out and then spin that as a high demand. That makes their stock bump up as well as more people place orders for the next batch.

It's all marketing and you're being manipulated by it.

Edit: Some of y'all are naive.

HumblyTossed··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
> Apple does not have a psyops division cooking up ever more elaborate ways to seed demand for low-end, low-margin Macs via bot armies.

Of course not, they outsource that.

HumblyTossed··on Study: Blue light impairs the eye's ability to distinguish fine detail most
Yeah. I worked in the optical industry to pay for college. That was decades ago and one of the Drs I worked with and I had discussions on this. It was interesting at the time as I knew very little about optics when I started.
HumblyTossed··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
This is more a result of Clinton's failed CEO pay reform. It is what created this monster, not the tax bracket. Now, saying that, we DO need to tax these people higher. Eliminate all the ways they're able to squirm out from paying a fair share.
HumblyTossed··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Waze got hugely popular by gaming their maps; people would install it just to get a high score. I wish the FLOSS mapping ecosystem would do similar.
HumblyTossed··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Everything they say is a lie.
HumblyTossed··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Indeed it is. But that’s the point Miller, etc are trying to make.

We’re so screwed. Good luck to us ever building up goodwill again.

HumblyTossed··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Yes, but you've surely met people who giggled when they read that.
HumblyTossed··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Only because it doesn't contain RAM.
HumblyTossed··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Pretty much. Everyone seems to think prices will come back down, but I don't agree.
HumblyTossed··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
I'm in the US and _I_ don't want us to get credit. Even the worst of people do something good every now and then. But if you reward that, they won't change.
HumblyTossed··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
Is it really this fast or just this fast on benchmarks?
HumblyTossed··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
Incentive has shifted. It’s now more important to worry about “developer productivity” and churning out as much code as quickly as possible than it is to spend time optimizing that code.
HumblyTossed··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
> Would you still vote not guilty to protect their civil liberties, if you had information not shared with the jury that removed your reasonable doubt?

That is a different scenario to what was described by the person you replied to, no?

And if one were to get that information the way you describe, that is surely jury tampering. That should be reported.

HumblyTossed··on Harvest hikes bills by 1500% after purchased by Bending Spoons
> This argument is unfortunately flawed. If the customers had been handed the software on day 1, by day 100 it would be full of security bugs

Stop. This doesn't have to be true...

> Oh and they'd have to maintain mobile apps on Android and iOS as those platforms change and break things. They might need to buy cyber risk insurance too.

This worked just fine, also, until Apple decided to have meetings with devs of popular software to push for subscriptions. Not we have the current state of bullshit.

HumblyTossed··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
And when they don't, copium will suggest that it is due to market conditions.

HumblyTossed··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
But if we learn anything from big corporations, they'll keep the difference as profits. IOW, Apple won't be lowering their prices.

And that one can only win if it convinces leaders to regulate AI so that opensource models don't get good enough.
