HotGarbage··on We do not have sufficient links to the UK for Online Safety Act to be applicable
Does that mean a significant population of Britbongs are on 4chan?
HotGarbage··on In memory of the Christmas Island shrew
I thought this was going to an obituary for the resident who got the original goatse.cx taken down.

Because everyone is making $300k+ at MAGA and they're offering half, if that.
HotGarbage··on Hacker News Live Feed
I did this too: https://hn.hotgarba.ge/

Edit: Through my own tool I see this comment got insta-marked as [dead], rude.

HotGarbage··on America's Hot Garbage Problem

HotGarbage··on Ask HN: What would a TikTok ban look like?
Ah, I wasn't aware of the India ban or how it was handled.

I guess I assumed TikTok might try to keep operating in the US out of defiance.

HotGarbage··on NYC Rat Sightings (Daily)
It's a shame NYC 311 doesn't include attachments from reports. I'd love to create a ratty version of https://poolette.pages.dev/
HotGarbage··on Show HN: Caltrans CCTV
Good point; there's only a single server handling all the requests so things can be a bit slow depending on the time of day. And there are browser limits to the number of concurrent connections.

Mobile browsers with native HLS support are faster as well. Those without need to load everything via https://github.com/video-dev/hls.js/ which slows things down.

I'll try to add some UI feedback so people don't give up too quickly.

HotGarbage··on Why Isn't Taxpayer-Funded U.S. Broadband Mapping Data Owned by the Public?
The address database and address-level ISP coverage is not freely available.
HotGarbage··on Why Isn't Taxpayer-Funded U.S. Broadband Mapping Data Owned by the Public?
When I checked last year the per-address geodata (sans addresses, sadly. Those are only available by license from CostQuest) was available via the map API. Only in small amounts (high zoom levels) however, and rate-limited. If someone wanted to perform a public service at the risk of pissing off the powers that be (see Aaron Swartz) it could be scraped.
HotGarbage··on Reddit Advised to Target at Least $5B Valuation in IPO

Scrolling up stops the auto scroll. Would an infinite scroll be better? I was inspired by https://firesky.tv/
HotGarbage··on Show HN: HN Firehose
Yes, though it includes submissions too. The items are too new to have any downvotes, but being so new you might catch some detritus that hasn't been killed yet.
HotGarbage··on Show HN: HN Firehose
If you scroll back, the auto-scrolling disables. Or at least it should...
HotGarbage··on The "Cheap" Web
I always thought search engines could go back to using titles, description, and meta tags, but limit the number of characters/meta tags accepted.
HotGarbage··on Demystifying Web Push Notifications
To learn web push I made a stupid toy site using Cloudflare to handle the server side of things: https://peter.hotgarba.ge

HotGarbage··on Show HN: The WorldWideWeb Pages, a directory of all Web domains
There's a lot of junk out there.

Domains are sorted by name. Quotes, commas, etc. aren't valid domain characters so you're just starting at the beginning with 0.

HotGarbage··on Shreddit is a Python program to remove all your Reddit comments
Pushshift already scraped your data and it's now floating around in torrents and on Archive.org. Someone will make a new way to access it without the soon-to-be-IPO'd reddit gatekeepers. I say delete it all!
HotGarbage··on This site is no longer solar powered for now
Used hotspots are $12 on eBay. The Franklin T9 is hackable and fun, but it would be nice to have Ethernet and OpenWRT for less than $100
HotGarbage··on This site is no longer solar powered for now
Leaving hotspots connected via USB 24/7 is a no-no, and people put some effort trying to run them without a battery:

I feel like there's some liability on Netgear's part here: People can't be expected to know they can't leave it connected and a charging circuit should not constantly feed the battery.

It's a shame there aren't more affordable connectivity options for projects like this. Hotspots with batteries tend to be a lot cheaper than battery-less routers and USB dongles. The latter of which isn't even available for 5G.

HotGarbage··on Show HN: Reddit Firehose
Posts tagged NSFW are filtered out by default, but yeah, a lot of stuff isn't really office safe.

Things are weird though. Kind-of a peek at what an unmoderated, non-algorithmic feed would look like.

HotGarbage··on Kchat: Persistent group chat in <50 lines using kdb+/k/q web sockets, JavaScript
Could be done with long polling or a never-closing HTTP response.

HotGarbage··on Kchat: Persistent group chat in <50 lines using kdb+/k/q web sockets, JavaScript
It's sadly more than 10 lines, server and client side.
