HexPhantom··on Blog about things you don't understand yet
Having it generate the argument is like letting the robot lift the weight. Having it poke holes in an argument you wrote yourself is more like having a spotter

There's a sweet spot where you know enough to ask useful questions but still remember which parts were confusing in the first place. Experts often lose that
HexPhantom··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
Exactly. The relevant comparison for someone with insomnia isn't melatonin vs perfect natural sleep, it's melatonin plus some morning grogginess vs not getting enough sleep at all
HexPhantom··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
Good point. For regular coffee drinkers, testing an hour after waking without their usual caffeine could be its own cognitive impairment experiment

You'd expect the standard OTC dose to be a sensible starting point, not potentially several times more than a younger person needs
HexPhantom··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
Seriously, separating the 2mg and 5mg groups would make this a lot more informative
HexPhantom··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
He was not writing abstractly about mortality; he knew exactly what it meant
HexPhantom··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
Learn the whole system, then remove everything unnecessary
HexPhantom··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
Public transport makes commuting less wasteful, but I am not sure it makes a long commute free
HexPhantom··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
None of the ideas are completely new, but putting them together this clearly makes them harder to dismiss and easier to remember
HexPhantom··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
The one part I struggle with is -accept everything-. Acceptance helps with what cannot be changed, but I have also become happier by refusing to accept certain jobs, habits, relationships...
HexPhantom··on Maybe you should learn something
That's probably the sweet spot
HexPhantom··on Maybe you should learn something
There's something useful about time that is already spoken for. You're on the train, you can't do much else, so learning some Dutch feels easy. At home the same half hour somehow gets fragmented into six different things
HexPhantom··on Maybe you should learn something
I think there's a middle group too: people who like having learned something, but don't really enjoy those first few sessions. For them, just knowing that the initial frustration is normal can help a lot
HexPhantom··on Maybe you should learn something
Wanna say that this is a much better argument for learning than productivity or "becoming a more interesting person". Sometimes it is simply a way to keep the mind pointed outward
HexPhantom··on Maybe you should learn something
One thing I wish this emphasized more is that adults often confuse learning with consuming material about learning, which is why my useful rule has become: if I'm not producing errors, I'm probably not practicing yet
HexPhantom··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
I think this is a bit too deterministic. Even if Europe is in a weak position economically, "the US does not need the rest of the world" seems overstated
HexPhantom··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
It feels less like a pure tech market now and more like cloud, semiconductors and defense policy all getting mixed together
HexPhantom··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
Where the frontier labs still have a business is probably not casual consumer chat
HexPhantom··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
I share the sadness, but I'm not sure the consumer market was ever the main prize here
HexPhantom··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
Hard to see how this does not turn into export controls for models, just with a lot more ambiguity
HexPhantom··on Making a vintage LLM from scratch
You may not build your daily system that way afterwards, but the mental model sticks
HexPhantom··on Making a vintage LLM from scratch
Yeah, that seems like an important distinction
HexPhantom··on Making a vintage LLM from scratch
Instead of always trying to make models more current and general, there may be value in making them deliberately narrow, historically constrained and weird in a well-defined way
HexPhantom··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
The vitamin D angle seems much more plausible to me as a public-health issue than as an explanation for broad population-level cognitive differences
HexPhantom··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
What I find more plausible is that low sun exposure is one small contributor among many
HexPhantom··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
The paper isn't saying vitamin D determines cognition in general, just that there was a modest signal in a couple of memory measures
HexPhantom··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
Women in the study weren't all starting from very low vitamin D levels
HexPhantom··on Vitamin D3 During Pregnancy and Cognitive Performance at 10 Years
I'd read this less as "high-dose vitamin D makes kids smarter" and more as "prenatal vitamin D might matter for some neurodevelopmental outcomes, and it’s worth testing more directly"
HexPhantom··on AI will be used to estimate age of asylum seekers from next year
I think "accountability sink" is the right phrase here
