It is called Risk Homeostasis, it is when you do something risky but do not experience the negatives. It is like driving through red traffic lights, if you do it 10 times and you do not have a crash then you start to think that you can ignore red lights. The risks and dangers are still there but you have just been lucky, until you aren't.
Trump has always had this mentality of, you can do awful things and get a lot of media attention but if it gets to hot then you can just back down. Iran is the one thing he cannot back down from and has no escape strategy. It is going to be the biggest of the black marks on Trumps legacy. Considering a lot of what he has done on the international stage, that is pretty damning.
While there is a huge stack of skill, training and just good genetics at work. A big part of this does come down to, who can push themselves closes to the absolute limits without dying.
If there is what they want to do, go for it. But not for everybody.
Looking at Loongsons processors for instance. About 15 years ago they coudl barely compete with a Pentium 2. Now they are about 4-5 years behind Intel/AMD. Further behind on some more specific work loads (SSL decoding for example) Not great but that is a decent jump. The jumps between generations are pretty decent.
LA446 was a decent enough processor core but had an awful memory controller that held it back as soon as it needed to reach outside of cache. As such it was SLOW.
But they learned the lesson and now the LA664 almost entirely fixed that issue. I think a big part of performance issues is that they are working domestic 5 to 7nm processes, so a good 5-7 years behind.
They are launching the LA864 later this year and are touting some decent performance gains. That is just marketing so far but something to keep an eye on.
Considering that these chips are using their own ISA, own designs, domestic manufacturing and they aren't terrible is a big thing.
I suspect in the next 5 years they have the chance of completely closing the gap. But it can also go the other way that they end up stalling as smaller nodes get much more difficult to attain.
Reminds me of the line from The Naked Gun "Doctors give him a 50% chance of living, but there is only a 10% chance of that."
He might not have the best domestic moves but when it comes to Geopolitics, he is all over it.
Essentially, regardless of who is in, they rarely teardown the injustices of the past but merely build on them. They will rip out like 20% of things that are socially changing but after that it is a ratchet upwards on things that cement in further power.
I am seeing similar positions in other countries now.
Hopefully a lot of the fears don't pan out but we won't know until it gets closer.
I'm not saying that there aren't better options but both major parties are complicit in how the system is organised. The US electoral system gets ever more distorted with every minor adjustment in the hopes of swinging various seats in their favour and now it just looks ridiculous.
I think it is deeper, that these actions were taken at the top and a sizable amount of the people sided with them, that sends the message that the US cannot be trusted long term, it has become cultural. I get that it isnt a majority of people but it is big enough that it cannot be ignored.
I have seen it hallucinate things confidently but that is usually when it has no direct sources to pin down the output.
If you are really motivated, leave instructions on how someone else can pick up were you left off even if it is just an email address others can reach out to.
Not sure if because of that being sort of torn down but recent years he has been clarifying he wasn't talking about a literal left/right device but more an analogy to different modes of thinking.
There is some hemisphere function allocation but it feels far to over played in folks trying to offer easy answers to difficult things.
We can do things just for the fun of it. Woz made the Apple computer basically as a toy, nothing more. And that's cool.
That is not to say that they aren't focusing on performance gains, just that they have ensured the user experience is the top priority.
Also calling listeners "Biological processors" is one of the funniest dystopian outcomes of this.
The limit ultimately will be how well the algorithm can keep up with changes in LLM cadence over time. This is usually were project like this come undone, the concept it easy enough to build, it is the up to date data set where the real magic is.
But other than that, very cool to see and interested to see how it goes.
This doesn't mean this stuff will improve drastically as it might just highlight how low the bar is for some folks, but it is better than nothing.
Sort of like how reality TV was considered broadcast anesthetic slop, and yet people couldn't get enough of it and it is still with us decades later.
Now 25 years later, they know who you are talking too, what you are talking about, where you are almost in real time, what websites you browse, books you read, music you like, podcasts you indulge in, what social media trends you follow, general political points of view, sexual orientation, what you look like and so on... It was all taken one little inch at a time and now we have mass apathy about it all.
And once they have taken that little bit, they will never let it go by choice.
Here in Australia, there are now ID proof of age requirements for Social media (still a little loosely enforced)and pornography. They have their foot in the door, you can see where it is going next.
Not saying it is a huge factor but it is there.
